One summer working in DC, we took visitors once a week to Mount Vernon for several hours.after touring the grounds the first few visits, I just gravitated to the lawn overlooking the Potomac. Easily my favorite spot in DC. No wonder George talked endlessly about just wanting to get back to his beloved Mount Vernon. I have wanted a house overlooking a river ever since.

Random advise for people in DC today. If you want a great view of the fireworks, check out the lawn down the hill from the Marine Corps Memorial (Iwo Jima). It's elevated and out of the smoke. It's been a few years since we did that so make sure they haven't closed it off.

I can confirm that's a great vantage point. We watched the display from there in 2009.

Get there early to get an optimal viewing site, though, like mid-afternoon. By the time we arrived, it was early evening, and it was packed.

Agree. The family lived in NOVA for 4 1/2 years. I worked for a PE firm that was at 1700 Pennsylvania Ave at the time. We went to Mount Vernon almost monthly. May times we just sat on the back porch/lawn. Such a wonderful place. Almost bought a house nearby that was on land originally part of the estate.

Jefferson also had it good with Monticello. I'd never left either place. I am thankful that both men put faith, honor and country above their own self interest.

On the way up from Fort Worth to see my son in DC for the fourth, my wife and I stopped to visit an old family graveyard of my mother's folks in Baldwin, GA. My middle name is Lane.

My 4x great grandfather.

There are already literally hundreds of thousands outside who were in the DMV ready for the parade but my guess is they did not want some of the old fatties from Iowa marching alongside their HS band to collapse and die on 21st street

More planes just flew overhead but it's too hot to stand out there waiting for the next flyby

Hopefully my room will have a view if they can ever finish cleaning it

My plan is to head down from Union station around 2100 to watch fireworks from west portico of capital building but I'm guessing they built fences up there as well because military dictatorship so it will drive people further to 14th street

They changed rules already to keep gates open rather than closing at 1800
