Related article said approaching $600k. I think FEMA limits "structural repairs to $250k.

FEMA may not be the funding source here, much of this work is through the HUD CDBG programs with a variety of different caps for repair, rehab and lift & shifts. The last being by far the most expensive use of funds.

The very youngest boomers are now 62 or so altho the argument has been made that the later boomers aren't even boomers at all but rather Gen Jones and I think there's some legit truth to it. Later "boomers" are very different from early "boomers".

I get your point tho.

As a Late Boomer, I get this. A little bit too late to get the best of the Boomers.
Late boomers basically came of age in the 80s and have little in common culturally with the early boomers that included hippies. Late boomers have far more in common with Gen X.

Take a drive through Meyerland by Braes Bayou in Houston. They've raised multiple houses, concrete slabs included, close to 10 ft.

I live in Meyerland. There are several over 10 ft. They raised a house where the front door is now a foot higher than the eaves of the house next door.

I feel I would need to take a break halfway up the climb to the front door of some of the houses on Braeswood.

There's a house on Clear Lake that did just the same thing. Lifted the whole thing up, garage and all. The garage doors are still there, albeit with a ten foot drop-off.

A few years ago when my father was sick in the hospital, I went on a walk to relieve stress and came across that house.

FWIW, we structured our retirement assuming that Medicare and Social Security would be broke by now,

Since they aren't, we are using them and saving our retirement, probably passing a lot to our kids.

And FIY, it ain't "Boomers" who refuse to touch entitlements, It's Democrats who love to scare people in order to harvest votes,

I would contend most Republicans wouldn't be in favor of touching entitlements in any meaningful way either. It's not just the Dems.

What does wealth have to do with someone not wanting to be flooded and raising their home. My boomer parents raised their house up 10 feet, after a flood hit our home in 1989. I can tell you right now, my parents were not rich. Dad was driving a 1980 F100 that he inherited after his dad died and mom was driving a donated 1979 Mercery Cougar red on red. Thing looked like something from a rap video.

Serious question, do y'all have nothing else better to do, than complain about what someone does with their money. Talk about 1st world white people privilege. Damn you boomers damn you

I don't understand the big deal. Where I grew up everyone lifted their houses, family friends outside of Lake Charles had their entire neighborhoods lifted after Katrina.

There isn't one, other than some people need a new reason to hate "boomers," usually out of jealousy and a need to blame boomers for all of their problems.

The grief towards boomers is basically two things. The first is when they constantly lecture us about how they "made it" and it's nowhere near as easy now as it was for them. I remember my first salaried job and my mom said "what are you complaining about, I made the same amount just out of college." And when I adjusted for inflation it was well over $100k in today's purchasing power. Also, her degree was in political science which wouldn't be nearly as valuable today. Back then, if you had any degree whatsoever you could get a good job. So there's also some buyers remorse with being pushed into going to college.

The other issue is the refusal to do anything about entitlements. We all know that we're getting hosed for these completely unsustainable programs. Most boomers will even admit that we're screwed. But then when you ask them if they'd be willing to cut it the answer is always no. So they admit they're screwing over their children and maybe even their grandchildren, but they gotta get theirs.

"Poor muffin!. It's so hard being you!" (Anna Kendrick)

Uh, we EARNED it. You might try that one.

I remember looking at SS in the 80's, and I also felt it was unsustainable, that I was being forced to contribute to something with no chance of a return on my investment. Now, I'm retired, and you expect me to forfeit something I paid for? I'm sorry you feel life is so unfair. Talk to me again after you've put your kids through college and worked for 40+ years.
(Oh, btw, you will be blamed for everything that's "wrong" with society, while you're doing all that).
The Ex Officio Director

People who blame boomers are the ones out there paying 2k a month on a truck and living in a house that's probably 3x what they really need.

You might be thinking of the IBHS facility in Richburg, SC. I toured it last year and saw the wind tunnel as well as a house they had wired up with a thousand sensors to see how different parts of the home reacted to different types of wind.

They end up doing several tests on the same house. Once a piece of it fails, they shut it down, repair the house, and test it again for different variables. Finally, when they are all done, they open up the bay doors and blow the whole thing to pieces. It's an unbelievable sight.

Rob, you would not imagine the things I have been called racist for. No granite countertops in my free gubmit house? That's racist. Won't repaint my house after 10 years cause it's not warranty? Racist. Didn't put down flooring that would prevent the piss from the herd of pitbulls and Rottweilers and the one Pomeranian roaming the house leading to it delaminating? That's racist.

Unfortunately a couple of them TAUGHT school for a number of years. Then would tell me they tutor privately now for cash only so they can qualify for the program.

Even had one tell me she deserved more and would not stop u til she recovered every dollar she had paid in. Now, no offense so, but you may actually appreciate that one.

Oh, and if I reported her fraud…? Yep. Racist.

  • Make delayed gratification a part of your lifestyle.
  • Save, save, save.
  • Eat at home more.
  • Invest in stocks...bypass the CD's or the Bonds.
  • Live below your means.
I can't speak for all Boomers, but that's what got us to the promised land.

Good luck.

1) Its a beach town. Thats where old people go to retire (die)
2) She "doesn't want to move".
3) Has over $500K cash to spend on a vanity project

Speculating here:
4) She's a widow whose husband died years ago. She's been burning through the insurance money and other assets that he worked for and most importantly there's no way living husband would approve a project that is freaking stupid........

This is a boomer project 100%, prove me wrong.
