No.
Then Fedex will increase the prices as you have no other place to go, then you are going to complain about that as well and will have no place to go.

Capitalism does NOT always work.

And the government never works efficiently or effectively. Most mail is not necessary as the re are electronic means to get most information in the US. The problem is we have too many people who need government agencies and programs to fund the grift and fraud.

I agree with you.

But my statement is also true that closing down USPS will not solve anything, it will make things worse as Fedex and UPS will get a duopoly and will fleece customers.

What extra do you think I would pay to not have a $16,000 payment from a customer get lost? I don't care if I have to pay more.

It reminds me of when I had Sprint (long time ago) I had unlimited data and texts for $45 a month when everyone else was in the $70s. But I had no service at home or work.

Who cares if it's cheap, if it sucks, it aint worth a wooden nickel!

My brother in law retired from his career, got bored, and got a job at a post office in Austin. He said NOBODY did any work except him. The manager would beg and plead and they told him to f off and there was nothing he could do. They had one carrier who just didn't feel like delivering her mail and was dumping it in Town Lake. He said when they found out they had to go down, rake the mail out of the lake, and lay it out in the parking lot to dry. He finally quit. It's a wonder anything gets where it is supposed to go.

How is that not a felony!

When I was a kid, we went to stay with my grandparents. We went to play basketball at a court down the street and on the way home, we opened every mailbox and looked inside. Didn't take anything, just being kids, looked in and either laughed if they had mail or laughed if they didn't.

Anyway, Grandad caught us about 3 houses away and I thought he was going to kill us. About the only time he ever showed anger to his grandkids.

I've always thought tampering with mail is a felony. That carrier should have been thrown in jail.

It depends on where you are. If you are in the city, yes USPS isn't up to what FedEx and UPS is. You live outside in a rural area and it's opposite. USPS are local town workers and go extra mile to help out. FedEx and USPS suck.

My mail carrier at the house, Phil, is awesome. If present when he comes by he will pull in the driveway, hand deliver the mail, play with the dog and chat. We make sure to give him a GC around Christmas time.

Alternatively at the office, we have a map of the US and we put a pin in all the states we've received mail for. From California to Delaware, Michigan and about 25 states in all so far. It's a bad joke. They also take days off at a time. We receive on average 10+ mail items / envelopes a day. No mail, no mail, no mail, boom big bundle. It also seems like a different person all the time.

If you walk into both USPS locations the differences are stark. Zero problem with our home USPS.

It could be fixed, but there's no one with the stones to fix it.

I lived overseas for much of my life in countries without a functioning post service, so I have always appreciated the fact that you can reliably send things from one place to another in the USA. However, I hate the postal service now. It's actually a major cause of stress for me, that one day when I'm throwing out my junk mail that there will be something critically important nestled in it and I'll create an enormous headache for myself because I didn't notice it.

I would gladly pay something like $20 a month to only receive mail from people or organizations that have something particular to communicate to me specifically.

Sadly, I trust USPS slightly more than FedEx. They are awful!

UPS for the win!

Couple of summers ago I bought a steel 6 cu ft wheelbarrow tub replacement off of ebay. This was a large, heavy item that kids could literally take a bath in so it would be near impossible to lose it in even a busy shipping facility. Followed the package movement until it got to the UPS distribution center <5 miles from my house. Then all movement stopped. Repeated attempts for a status update over two weeks finally led to a single email message that they had "lost" my package. Repeated attempts to initiate a trace or whatever they called it were also ignored. Finally contacted the seller who immediately refunded my purchase, but I never heard from UPS other than that one cryptic email.

TLDR - UPS sucks. USPS sucks. They all suck and you're not going to find any heroes in this story

My father was in the USPS for 37 years and retired as a postmaster, although a long time ago. I remember him saying the one problem ruining the postal service was you couldn't fire ANYBODY, no matter how bad an employee was. Committing a felony was about the only way. When the poor workers started outnumbering the good workers, he hung it up.

About 30 yrs ago, my friend had just started at the post office (he had worked at the HEB Mailroom in their "Arsenal" prior to that). One night, their was a commotion and one of the people on the floor was caught smoking weed ON THE FLOOR. He was about to be suspended, when the union rep came in and stopped that nonsense. IIRC, dude got a slap on the wrist that was basically a 2week vacation.

He was floored. But their union ruins it like they all do.

Any time I have to go to the post office to speak with whoever is in charge, they come to the little half door window to speak to me. As soon as that little half door window opens up, it always reeks of marijuana smell back there. They don't even care that everyone knows.

If capitalism were allowed to work, the USPS would disappear into bankruptcy.

FedEx could continue to increase their rates and give lousy service.
Then some enterprising persons would create a new delivery services that would provide better service for less cost. If FedEx would refuse to adapt to the new competition then they would also disappear into bankruptcy.

The problem is that the government through the USPS subsidies and irrational employment requirements continues to exist and government and union requirements kill competition, thereby allowing big, inefficient corporations to keep going with increasingly poor service while charging higher prices.

WHY IS THE US POSTAL SERVICE SO AWFUL!?

Is anyone else to the point where I am going to stop using the postal service, including anything that I order. If I go to order something online and they don't ship with Fed Ex or UPS, I will email them and let them know I won't be ordering because of their shipping.

I try hard not to get violent when my neighbors and people I know (NOT MY FRIENDS) think that more government is the answer for anything. The US postal "Service" is just another example of what happens when there is zero accountability.

If you want to ship something to a service member over seas or deployed anywhere (even on a boat), you have to use the postal service. That's the only option the military mail service will accept (from what I understand).

I shipped a care package to my younger son who is overseas in a foreign country, and I had to go to the USPS. Since he is in a foreign country, I had to use a customs form (which I ended up filling out at the post office). Really NBD but after I filled it out by hand, the postal work then MANUALLY entered everything I'd written by hand on the form into the computer....like WTF....

Next time, my wife organized a huge package delivery thru her works veterans org. for my son's platoon (43-guys) and loaded into two large packages. Rather than fill out the form by hand, we used the USPS online customs form, which was a HUGE PITA (it would take seconds to tab between cells). So that takes like 30-minutes to fill out the forms, then she PDF'd and printed the form to bring to the post office. The form had extremely small, and very light text that was almost impossible to read without some +3 cheaters. It had a bar code on it so I figured the USPS would just scan the bar code.

NOPE, the postal work looked at the form like it was some foreign object and had no clue what it was. So back to the hand form and then she repeated it into the computer. Researching online, this is not an uncommon problem and only 'some' post offices will use the online form. WTF is the point of the form (which again was fuzzy small text) when not every office even know's what it is?

Capitalism does NOT always work.

FedEx and UPS already move 80% of the USPS mail.

The USPS only functions to perform the 'last-mile' delivery.

And, the new head of the USPS has put together a plan to bid-out the last-mile to private carriers.

They have become just an additional layer/cost in the process. Nothing more.

I live in Dallas, 6 miles from downtown and 1.2 miles from my post office.

Last week had a package delivery that was delayed 6 days as the package went from VA, through TN and Ark then arrived in Dallas……. was then sent to Lubbock, then to Amarillo, then back to Dallas. WTF?!?!

Their "last mile" service that UPS or DHL uses is awful. UPS or DHL can get something to Dallas from CA, Maine or Western Europe or UK in 2-3 days, then once it gets to the main post office in Dallas it will take 4-6 days to get delivered.

USPS needs to be privatized, period. Germany has done so with great success.

Our business was located in an office complex and we had the cluster type mailboxes. My partner noticed we were missing a bunch of checks.

Come to find out they were being stolen out of the mail. Someone attempted to cash several in Mississippi - we are in Lewisville, Tx.

I went to the Post Office and talked to the lady at the desk. She could care less. Finally, I asked to speak to the Postmaster and it was a young guy and he gave me a yellow post-it note with a phone number to call (which was never answered) and a web address to file a complaint. I got a notice that they received the complaint - but nothing since. This 3-4 years ago.

We moved the mail address to my house and haven't had any issues since.

We tried to initiate an investigation into the stolen checks with the police. Turns out it has be done by the municipality where they attempted to cash the check. We dropped it because there was zero chance it was going to be pursued.

I live out in small town rural America and the USPS employees are pretty nice and competent. They rarely lose things locally and pricier good service at our little post office.

The problem is that the mail has to travel through their entire logistical process and a few things do wend up going on truly bizarre routing to get delivered. Like sent STATES out of the way and stuck there for days or weeks until they figure it out kind of thing.

Our UPS is good. Our FedEx is very hit or miss. We get Amazon direct and other deliveries fairly reliably.
