How about no. Then again, I don't think there's a ton of US born Americans willing to do roofing in July in Phoenix or work at the slaughterhouse in central Nebraska. Can we not have system where we know who those guys are, given them a 4-6 month work permit to make beucoup dinero and then return to Central America?

We used to have one. LBJ killed it.
"If you will not fight for right when you can easily win without blood shed; if you will not fight when your victory is sure and not too costly; you may come to the moment when you will have to fight with all the odds against you and only a precarious chance of survival. I would rather live in a society where bacon is a little more expensive and US citizens get paid more to work in a slaughterhouse in central Nebraska. For the right amount of money, I would gladly work in a slaughterhouse in Nebraska. We are seeing the impact of this from the number of high school graduating men going into the trades over college.

But, I understand that intelligent minds and disagree on such. I just place more value on the importance of the working man to our way of life.

Seems like a good plan to me. Hire only in real need and not to pull down wages like tech companies do and send them packing after certain months. No green card, no citizenship. Just GTFO.

That is why I say we have no free markets in America. Never did. It is all fixed.
In a real free market, we would pay more to attract the right talent and skill as there is no one around. Not import 100000000000000000 people from some sheethole country to manipulate the system and ruin the equilibrium. That is why no American wants to get into roofing, because they know their future is cooked. Like tech these days.

The biggest difference between roofing and plumbing is that you don't need a license to install a roof, and you have to be a US citizen or have the right to work legally in the US to get a plumbing license.

Lots more kids getting into plumbing these days.

What's the right amount of money for you to do that? Let's quantify exactly how much the price of beef and pork would increase at that amount. I don't favor a labor and wage race to the bottom but I think some of you are naive about the actual citizen market clearing price of difficult jobs in agriculture and construction and overselling how much pain you'd actually tolerate.

There is also a difference between the trades and fungible low skill labor. The new graduate becoming an HVAC tech is not the same person whose employment opportunities are fast food or construction.

We fed ourselves before mass illegal immigration was a thing using natives. Even during Bracero, Americans did the bulk of farm work. We had the industrial revolution and then the information technology revolution. Those were better jobs/higher pay and citizens moved into those jobs. But if you pay enough for the job, any job, natives will do those jobs. That's the issue here.

Your statement is accurate only when written like this: I don't think there's a ton of US born Americans willing to do roofing in July in Phoenix or work at the slaughterhouse in central Nebraska for the wages/bennies that are currently paid.

Should be treated as an invasion, not immigration. For those who think it is narrow minded not to let them come, they are allowed in for power reasons and to undercut your and your kids wages. Americans are the real victims here.

The bracero program?

Yes. Worked quite well at the time. Farmers mostly needing the labor for harvest time participating on the Bracero program, paid them, provided housing and food. They were treated well, went from harvest to harvest and then back home. Very often taking America goods such as older style treadle sewing machines they bought while present in the states.

There detractors to that program, such as Caesar Chavez who wanted the farm workers to be unionized and considered the braceros as scab labor.

Even if the price of beef goes up, fewer of my tax $'s will be given out to illegal immigrants, so it is a win for me.

That's actually exactly what I said " some of you are naive about the actual citizen market clearing price of difficult jobs." Define the price of labor and we can easily calculate how much the price of food/services will increase, the opportunity cost of labor moving to those jobs and away from what they are currently doing, and then make an assessment if that is preferred over just having temporary foreign workers get lower but still humane wages for doing the same thing.

It's why I wanted us to grant asylum to the S.African farmers who were being ran out and sometimes murdered.

And I have no issues with Hispanics from Latin countries, coming here to work hard (given it's done legally). But we should not be allowing anyone/everyone to come here to suck our resources dry.

Bring in the people who will contribute....not the ones who just want freebies.

The issue isn't the workforce itself; it's the method in which they immigrate. We need a better system for allowing & tracking the temporary/seasonal work force.

Simply allowing open borders, is silly.

But to your point, making the argument against our need for this work force is counter-intuitive. We benefit from them.

There is a middle ground between open borders and ending the allowance of a seasonal work force.

Thing is, it wasn't an issue for decades. Only recently, with ridiculous policies, did it become a giant problem.

What's the implication here though, that any current post-colonial third-world country, from Somolia to Cambodia to El Salvador, could've bootstrapped their way to being a first world Democracy over the past 70 years if they'd just had the right culture values?

Compare colonial African countries to non colonial African countries. Thomas Sowell was right.

Also the implication is dont let in UNVETTED third worlders with crappy cultures. Democrats under Biden had the borders open and let anyone in.

Also IQ across groups of people is genetic, no amount of education will change it. Might want to weed out low iq groups as well.

You are overthinking or fishing. The implication and truth of the matter is that most, if not all, cultures out there are inferior to ours. And letting those cultures in simply degrades ours because people have stopped assimilating to American culture.

Of course, we have our own cultural issues now because of Democrat policy and corruption over last several decades.
