I don't particularly care with AOC's opinion is about the border. I am not here to debate what Democrats want. I am here to state what effective public policy in the US could be.

How the world actually is is that humans have been migrating for eons for better opportunities for themselves and families, and the world of economics, including labor economics, runs on supply and demand. It takes restrictive measures to prevent people from doing that, and when you decrease the supply of labor, you increase the price of labor, and get inflation.

So if I take the world on how it is, people wanting better lives for themselves, and economic rules being what they are, I get to a system where we have a mutually beneficial relationship between temporary workers to grow their wealth to take it back home with them, actual security in understanding who is here, and lowered prices for common goods for jobs where the market clearing price of a citizen pushes the cost of common consumables beyond the realm of affordability.

How about no. Then again, I don't think there's a ton of US born Americans willing to do roofing in July in Phoenix or work at the slaughterhouse in central Nebraska. Can we not have system where we know who those guys are, given them a 4-6 month work permit to make beucoup dinero and then return to Central America?

I would rather live in a society where bacon is a little more expensive and US citizens get paid more to work in a slaughterhouse in central Nebraska. For the right amount of money, I would gladly work in a slaughterhouse in Nebraska. We are seeing the impact of this from the number of high school graduating men going into the trades over college.

But, I understand that intelligent minds and disagree on such. I just place more value on the importance of the working man to our way of life.

That is why I say we have no free markets in America. Never did. It is all fixed.
In a real free market, we would pay more to attract the right talent and skill as there is no one around. Not import 100000000000000000 people from some sheethole country to manipulate the system and ruin the equilibrium. That is why no American wants to get into roofing, because they know their future is cooked. Like tech these days.
