In short, I don't fear anyone in the AFC.

Jags offense is good but they have some stinkers as well. Bills are great but thankfully won't have home field and for some reason we own Josh Allen. Denver's offense can have some real issues as well. But the real contenders are JAX, BUF, DEN, and HOU.

This is a very solid take.

The Texans do seem to own Josh Allen in Houston, but this isn't the Josh Allen that played in Houston in the playoffs in 2020.

His playoff stats are 25 tds, 4 ints, 3359 pass yards.,668 rushing yards with 7 rushing tds

In 13 playoff games he has a stat line that is pretty identical to his mvp season of 17 games.

So was Stroud pulled just as a precaution the other day or what? I asked the board but didn't get an answer. I thought it was odd seeing the back up in when driving to win the game. Did a win or loss not matter at all for the playoffs?

Yes - as were all the defensive starters and Schultz. I believe Lassiter has a lingering issue, which he's played through and Howard had an in game injury. Outside of that, I don't think there are any material concerns.

Hopefully, Allen does not enter "playoff" mode. His last three games have been statistically lackluster.

@Patriots (win): 193 yd, 3 TD , 0 Int
@Browns (win): 130 yd, 0 TD , 0 Int
Eagles (loss): 262 yd, 0 TD , 0 Int

josh allen "playoff mode" doesn't scare me.. this Bills team is not what it has been in years past; not because of Allen, but because of the surrounding cast. their run defense is bad. Ed Oliver, Milano, and other injuries have them playing just bad defense. Their offense lacks vertical passing game. WRs corps isn't good. TE injuries, etc. Allen trying to do too much with a weak cast has him turning the ball over too much. I think the Texans could feast on buffalo again, easily.

His stats for this season for an "off" year are look to be almost identical to his MVP season which led the team to the AFC Championship.

Their offense while lacking the vertical threat, they somehow are top 3 in yd/att, which is obviously a lot of yac.
While their defense has been awful in the run defense, they have a top tier passing defense(#1 in ypg) and they have shut teams down in the second half the last month or more of the season. They are the #2 defense in the league the last 3 weeks of the season. Good teams round in to form and their defense seems to be doing just that.

They lead the league in rushing so as long as they aren't facing themselves their defense should be ok. NE is the only other AFC playoff team with a top 10 rushing attack.

well i'll be damned. I would not have guessed that. It feels like their defense sucked this year.

So what would the playoff picture been like if Texans had lost that game?

It would have depended on what Buffalo and the Chargers would have done.

Could have fallen to the 6th seed or as far as the 7th seed. Most likely would have fallen to the 6th seed because the Chargers chose to rest up.

Texans took a gamble they could win with the backups in the second half to avoid injury of their starters.

The second round could have been waaay worse depending on who won in the first round. The NFL reseeds every round now. So Let's say the Texans, Bills, and Patriots win. Round 2 would be Denver hosting the Bills and Patriots hosting the Texans. But if we have upsets across the board (which could happen), Texans, Bills, and Chargers all win. Then Broncos host Chargers and we host the Bills. If we had lost that game we would be going to Buffalo in that scenario or going to the Broncos in the first scenario

I was kicking this around in my head this morning, it feels like the AFC might be about to go on some sort of tectonic shift. Mahomes, Jackson, and Burrow all missed the playoffs, and Allen could easily be 1 and done. Those 4 guys have been the status quo top 4 QBs in the conference basically since Burrow took off and got the Bengals to the Super Bowl . Other than the 2019 fluke of Chiefs v. Titans, the AFC title game appearances the last 6 years are:

Chiefs 6
Bills: 2
Bengals: 2
Ravens: 1

Mahomes obviously has 3 rings and is 30 years old
Allen will be 30 in May
Jackson turns 29 tomorrow
Burrow turns 30 December.

Burrow missed 9 games this year as well as 7 in 2023 and 6 his rookie year. He was 5-3 starting in 2025 and had good numbers when he was healthy, but seemed to imply he wouldn't mind a move out of Cincy

Jackson has the worst year of his career when you combine passing/rushing. He had 349 yards rushing in 13 games. Last year he had 915 in 17 games.

Allen remains the most dynamic weapon in the league. He was about the same as last year, with a few more INTs, but the Bills seem like they're turning him into John Elway - I have no idea who any of his receivers are. it feels like him and Cook on an island.

Mahomes didn't seem too bad, but he too has a real lack of weapons. Kelce was decent this year but might retire. Rice only played 8 games and was good, but not amazing. The Chiefs apparently never want to have a running game ever again.

So are these teams all going to hold out and hope that the 30s are better than the 20s for everyone but Mahomes? Do the Chiefs let Mahomes play as long as he wants and pile up a lot of careers #s even if they're not Super Bowl worthy anymore?

Just something to kick around until the weekend.

This is the problem when your QB makes up 20% of your cap, it becomes hard to pay 52 other players.

Which is the real problem ahead for the Texans. Stroud isn't good enough to take up that much of the cap space.
zooguy96
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yep, either get Stroud to take less or trade him and get someone else on a rookie or close to deal. He's not good enough to make most in the league.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

this may sound eerily familiar...

but Harbaugh was not going to last long without Justin Tucker

Tucker bailed out the Ravens and Harbaugh (and frankly Lamar too) so, so, so, so many times

coaching in the NFL is much easier when you have a near automatic FG kicker from long distance

I'm not sure having a great kicker is a bail out.

If that were the case, I really wish we could have been bailed out in our last Aggie games this year.

And Bills fans would have 2-3 super bowls if their kicker could have bailed them out.

It may not be a true bail out, but to have 3 points from 55+ at a fairly reliable rate at the end of games is a huge weapon.

It can cover quite a bit.
LB12Diamond
How long do you want to ignore this user?

Yes

But the coach has to have a good enough team in place where a great kicker matters. So that's a positive for the head coach.

Take the Cowboys for example. They might have the best kicker in the league but it does not matter bc the head coach does not have his team ready so that it does.

FG kicking makes an inordinate amount of importance when you've got great defenses… Harbaugh lost his defense and his kicker… and now he's looking for a job. Good luck, Ravens… but not really.

apparently there are several crazy streaks on the line for this Texans-Steelers game

of course the Texans have never won a road playoff game

Mike Tomlin has not won a playoff game in 9 years

the Texans or Oilers -- the city of Houston -- has not won a road playoff game since 1988 (24-23 at Cleveland)

Mike Tomlin has never lost a Monday night home game

in fact 1991 was Pittsburgh's last home loss on Monday night -- 35 years ago
