Mid can be a slog. I understand some criticisms of it. I powered through by keeping the speed on the highest setting. The problem with late game was seemingly a few glitches more than the design itself, so I have saves where I've reached that point but haven't progressed into it.

Now that a fairly decent sized patch has dropped I will go revise those saves.

Despite that, I still love the game. Early game is masterful and despite the drawbacks, the combat and expansion of mid game can be fun if you dont lock yourself in a federation.

Anyone still playing EU4 since the latest DLC. I have liked some of the new features.

I am ashamed that I am the one who started this thread and then never went anywhere with GS games.

However, I did pick up Stellaris recently and I think the setting of that one will help me a lot in getting into these games.

Fingers crossed!

I finally got around to learning EU4. What a fantastic game but one thing driving me nuts is I have started three Ironman games in a row and every time I get to the 1530 range the save file goes boom and I lose the game. It is infuriating.

And Kampfers I am the friend request you accepted earlier, maytheus.

Good to know

Figured it had to be someone from here so I wasn't worried about it

Ran an epic Castille campaign during the winter. Control virtually all of spains historical empire with the exception of the Netherlands (could never get the burgundian inheritance to fire unfortunately) but I also control the cape and a solid chunk of Indonesia and all that yummy trade value. Oh, and I almost forgot my crusade that allowed me to reclaim the holy land and a nice chunk of Egypt. And I took a solid bite out of france to cripple him and stop him from being such a pain.

Still have about 100 years to dick about and I'm intending on steamrolling China (Ming has imploded so should be simple) and I may try to dismantle the HRE as well since they turned protestant in the league war.

anyone played any of the recent EU4 expansions? Haven't been paying much attention but it seems that they have generally been well received. Speaking specifically about Mandate of Heaven, Third Rome, and Cradle of Civilization.

Trying to figure out which ones to purchase before I start the inevitable winter campaigns over the upcoming break.

Yes, I have played them all.

Mandate of Heaven generally focuses on Asia, adding new features to the Chinese empire and to Japan, as well as expands some religions in the area. It also adds "Ages" with a feature to have a Golden Age for 50 years (once per campaign). It also gives objectives for each age that when completed, speed up your accumulation of "splendor" which can be spent on specific bonuses for that Age. Some nifty bonuses in there and some nation specific ones as well. Definitely pick this one up if you want to play in the Far East Asia.

Third Rome ENTIRELY focuses on the Russian region and Orthodox religion. So unless you really really like playing that region, you can avoid this DLC (it's not even classified as an "expansion" since it doesn't add as many expansive changes as the expansions do). You can still have fun playing in the Russian region without this DLC.

Cradle of Civilization focuse on the Middle East, adding new governments and flavor to the region and the Islamic religions. It also adds the profesionalism mechanic, which gives you something to do with your armies in times of peace to make them better for the next war. Professionalism is accumulated by drilling armies and by events. It gives bonuses to combat and specific bonuses, like cheaper generals, every 20% total professionalism. It also allows you to trade professionalism for manpower and gives you trade offs between using mercenaries or not. There's also an extra choice when sending merchants to trade nodes, which will give you a specific bonus in that trade region. I like this DLC, but it probably won't be on sale until they release another.

Started a hard Ottomans game after the release of the latest DLC and patch, which nerfed the Ottomans start a bit as well as completely changed the Jannisaries event and I just finished it up recently.

I went in with the goal to restore the Roman Empire (an actual decision you can take, with a large amount of requirements). I had to convert to Christianity early on as a requirement (I chose Coptic because it was the fastest to get and I wanted to try that religion). It was a really fun campaign. I ended up forming the Roman Empire in ~1790. Conquered all of Iberia, France, Italy, britain, most of lower central europe, everything north of Kongo in Africa, Anatolia, and Arabia.

Though the Ottomans were probably the easiest to do it with, this was only my third hard campaign, so I am pretty proud of it. Struggled with some coalitions early but when I finally beat the Mamluks in a war about 100 years in, I was set up to roll through everyone. I only ran into trouble when I met a rather large Brandenberg in the late game. Their military could beat me even if had twice the men in the battle. The Ottomans have strong units early on but fall behind in the late game. Also, Prussian ideas are just nasty to fight against. They definitely made my last 50-75 years pretty stressful.

All the older DLC on sale. Varied discounts based on age. Picked up the 3 most recent I was asking about. Think I'm going to finally make the Mughal run I've contemplated for ages.

FINALLY.

I got into Hearts of Iron 4.

Damn, but this game is fantastic. Learning curve wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Just gotta sit down and play it really. Like anything else I guess.

Can't believe it took me so long to get into this game. It's all I play now more or less.

Ok, now I'm intrigued. Reading through this thread, there appears to be some epic games out there that weren't ever on my radar.

They can be pretty epic.

The USA campaign i'm running now on HoI4 is intense. It's 1941 and i'm playing the historical mode. In mid 1940, Nazi Germany invaded the Nordic countries and overran them everywhere. I was in the war but had not had any enemy contact up to this point. I watched the once proud Viking nations turn black and made a snap decision of **** that. I was not prepared. But I went in anyways.

My navy was ancient and slow but it was large so I sent what I had anyways to clear the English Channel and northern fjords. I had six combat ready divisions. Just six. I could see that the Nazi's had 40+ rampaging through Norway. The other two countries had already fallen. It was a race against time. So I loaded my men into convoys and sailed at flank speed at the only open dock left in Norway. As they sailed the Nazi's continued to eat away at Norway until only four little provinces were left. The Norwegians had three divisions holding a pocket around that port but they were beaten to hell and gone.

My dudes sailed into the fjords when disaster struck. UBoats!! A running convoy battle broke out. Alas, the Nazi's sank several of my convoy ships, killing all aboard. Two whole divisions gone. As this was happening Norway lost another province and was down to three now. My surviving men finally made it into the port and unloaded. I immediately sent them to the front line. Their mission? HOLD AT ALL COSTS! I gave them this mission fully expecting that I was signing their death warrants.

But hold they did. They fought like heroes of old! My four frozen divisions dug in and dared the Nazi's to come at them. Which the Nazi's obliged gleefully. 42 Nazi divisions attacked all along the Pocket. These troops had never known defeat. They were powerful and sure in victory. NUTS!

For six long months the siege of the Pocket continued. Outnumbered 10 to 1, the Americans would not give. The Nazis pounded away with everything they had. They had complete air superiority. Overwhelming numbers. Armor. The Americans had rifles and grenades. Low supplies. Just not enough. Not enough of anything. Except willpower.

I started to trickle in more rifle divisions. The UBoat menace was ever present however and only around 80% of the relief I was sending was making it through. A lot of brave Americans lay under the frozen ice of the fjords. But I had to do it. I had to. Norway could not fall. I gathered my entire navy and sent them into the North looking for trouble. It is a back and forth against the UBoats. Wily bastarhds are incredibly hard to find.

Then it happened. The artillery and rifle fire along the Pocket faded into nothing. The Nazis had stopped! I had killed nearly 200K of them by this point. Losing around 30K myself in the process. They had been stopped. At this time I had amassed around 25 divisions in the Pocket and the time to strike was at hand. I launched a lightning attack and retook several provinces, cutting the nation in half. I now had a northern and southern front. I decided to retake the North as expeditiously as possible. I had 18 hardened divisions and I struck hard and fast. The first few provinces fell quickly. They I reached the mountain ranges. My men attacked along the line but they now faced the Ski-Jaegers. The Nazis had prepared and the tables were turned. They stopped me cold in the mountains. I attacked and attacked and attacked. I could not dislodge the Jeagers though. I was losing men at a 6 to 1 ratio trying. My men were exhausted and were losing efficiency with every battle. Reluctantly, I ordered cessation of offensive operations.

I am now faced with a conundrum. I was stopped at one point. But other avenues were open of course. I had complete control of the Channel at this point. This whole time I was building an invasion force. 80+ divisions. Where to send them though? Do I reinforce Norway and try again there? Do I open another front entirely? Africa looks tempting. As does France. But this time, Germany has attacked Russia and I can see fierce battles all along that line. The Nazis are fighting everywhere... A weakness must exist somewhere! I then notice that Russia is falling. Fast. Far faster than what happened in history. A northern port is still open where I can slip in a task force into Russia. Do I send my men to help hold the line with the pinko commie bastahds?

Decisions, decisions....

Oh, and just when my entire invasion force has landed in England eager to start killing some Nazis, my spies manage to slip a message through to me...Japan has started to justify war goals against me...

Just when I thought I had enough games to play I find this thread... and Europa Universalis IV (and seemingly 500 different DLC/expansions) is on sale on Steam. Only $10 for the base game; I figure I'll give it a go and see how deep this thing runs.
Will grab base and The Art of War (based on years old responses at the start of this thread). Anything else to pick up immediately?

EU4 is my favorite game. Easy to play but hard to master. I have 300+ hours and am still learning. If you want to see a guy who is extremely good, look up Arumba on YouTube. He posts multiple videos a day and currently has one series where he teaches someone else to play.

The AI (normally) goes to knock out secondary participants first I think. That's one good reason to use Vassels with mountain fort provinces as the AI goes after them and leaves your land alone.

I could very well be wrong then. Is Castile rivaled to Ottoman? Maybe that's why he's doing it. Either way it still sucks.

Bumping this back up.

Of the DLC's since Rights of Man I ended up picking up Dharma and Cradle of Civilization.

CofC adds a good bit if you play with Islamic nations.

Ok, I have finally broken into the GS genre with Hearts of Iron 4 and Stellaris. Great games.

But the OG still continues to elude me. Europa Universalis 4. I think it's time I crack it open again. Still don't have any DLCs for it.

Does Art of War still hold true of being the must buy? Can't afford to nab them all now, even with the sales going on.

I would say you definitely need to start with Art of War and Common Sense. Res Publica adds a pretty critical feature for like a few bucks.

Another option to consider is the sub model. I believe it was recently added where you pay $5/month and you get access to all the DLCs. May or may not be cheaper depending on how much you play and for how long.

I finally bought Hearts of Iron after the Man the Guns DLC was released last year. I find that all I really end up wanting to do in this game is build a navy as the US.

Also Stellaris is a really strong fun replayable game now. Still gets very bogged down in the late game and I think it still hasnt found itself in terms of empire specialization in the game. Theyve added lots of specialization that make the game interesting pregame but during game play if you play biological standard species your empire is just turns into one of a ton of bland multicultural empires that all seem the same.

Imperator never really took off compared to the other games. I played it right when it came out and it just didn't feel polished. I should probably try it again with a year of updates.

As for CK3, I think the release is set for September. I never got into CK2, but I am looking forward to 3. Now to just find some time to finally play a game...

2020 in the Nerdery has been rough for my free time, first Factorio and now EU4.

Thanks Nerdery for my impending divorce.
