I've been messing around with this. Taken with my cellphone camera RAW with manual focus.

So...the Fuji 50-140 is the sharpest lens I've ever owned, in any system, EVER.

Like, my jaw dropped.

The AF on the X-T2 is pretty amazing coming from a 6D, as well.

I believe the Fuji doesn't have an AA filter, which helps. Same as the Nikon D800e/D810/D850

Anti Aliasing filter to prevent Moire effect.

Olympus, Panasonic, and Fuji are doing away with it. I think u43 cameras use software to eliminate moire.

Was considering shooting my 40D for years to come but have a sizeable gift card burning a hole in my wallet now. Considering possibly getting either a 80D or a 7D MkII as they are very close in price/performance. Any strong thoughts to one vs the other?

$860 for 7DII with 15,000 shutter actuations.

Not bad. I've seen some brand new ones ranging from 1050 to 1150 the last couple of weeks.

Gauging interest in my old 40D body if anyone is looking to get into DSLR or knows someone looking to.

You'll likely have more hits just listing it for sale on the classifieds board than this thread, I'd wager.

I'd post on both classifieds and a stand-alone post here on Nerdery.

I go straight to step 3. I may do this once every 2 years. Pretty easy. I don't think Copperhill is still around but you should be able to find the supplies.

I need to learn how to take good indoor volleyball photos. It's the daughters turn in sports. Got some kind of lumix DMC FZ1000.

I like auto everything. I took some shots, got the face and the ball, but of course moving things blur. I have at least three more practices to play with it before the tourneys start. Auto everything setting is okay, but not great.

I know my wife wouldn't blow a lot of money on a camera, so this camera is probably not going to take the best indoor sports shots. However, the operator is a bigger problem at the moment. Wish I had this for baseball!

If anyone has managed decent indoor sports photos with an average camera, I would appreciate any advice.

Is your daughter playing club or rec league? We've been to sites all over Texas and some outside. It's a very challenging environment to shoot.

guitarsoup helped me with what I have today to take pics of my daughter's club team.

Last year finally purchased a Canon 1Dm3 that's a dinosaur but got me into the price range I needed: ~$400 used.
Then the dreaded purchase of a 70-200 2.8. Last year bought a non-IS version for $800. For this year, I got the IS version for the same $800 so at least prices are coming down.

The minimal setting I use are:
Manual, iso 1600, f/2.8 and about 1/800 shutter. Sometimes can get away with 1/640 if the venue is really badly lit. I always hope and try for 1/1000.

I know moms who just use their new iphones and I've been amazed how far along they've come. The pics probably aren't going to be printable but can look pretty nice on the small screen.

I guess my post may not help you that much if you can't spend any money.

I know I've tried helping other parents with their cheapie DSLRs and kit lenses and they pretty much give up in the end and are happy to use what I post.

If you think your kid might be playing club for a while, I say start investing piece by piece. My pics can be just as good as the pros you pay to take pictures of your team at tournaments. They do have the advantage of not caring about the team and just earning a buck taking good pics. I, otoh, am fan first so I miss lots of shots while watching the play and cheering.

Club, but only 11 year old 6th grader. She's good now, but isn't going to be 6'+, so not likely going to play at the 6A HS level.

Dark gyms SUCK to shoot in. An 85mm 1.8 might be your best choice depending on where you can be situated.

The auto took bright pictures about like what you would expect (moving parts blurred). I think this camera will struggle to get 1/400 in the gym as is. However, that results in better photos than the full auto setting. I've tried that night time, indoors at home. Hopefully the gym is brighter. I will see how fast It will go next practice. That clunky 25 to 400 lens is always going to be a liability.

This would have been okay for age 9 where they weren't jumping and hitting as much.

With the FZ1000 you might be better of filming the action in multiple short 4K videos and then using the feature the camera has to pull a single frame out of the video and saving to the memory card.

I once tried to use the FZ1000 at an indoor track meet with limited success. I can't find the images on the hard drive to see what the settings were, probably erased them.

Now I am not the world's foremost expert in volleyball photography as I have shot it a grand total of one time, but I was recently asked how to shoot it and here are my thoughts.

Lol at the one time, but those were fantastic shots.

400mm 2.8?

The light isn't changing in there. Put it in manual.

What lens are you shooting with?

Start with:

ISO 3200
f/2.8
1/800th

And adjust from there. Take a pic, look at the back of your screen. Too dark and up the ISO to 6400 and try again.

ISO = bigger number = brighter

Aperture = smaller number = brighter

Shutter speed = bigger number = brighter

So if you go from shutter speed 1/800th to 1/400th, you just let in twice as much light.

If you go from ISO 6400 to 3200, you get half as much light.

If you go from aperture 4 to 2.8, you let in twice as much light. f/2 doubles your light again.

So if you go from the cheap lens that comes with the camera like an 18-55 5.6 and you buy a 85mm 1.8, you go from 5.6 to 1.8.

5.6 --> 4 --> 2.8 --> 2

That 85mm 1.8 lens lets in EIGHT times more light than the 18-55mm 5.6 lens that came with your camera. Really more than that, because it goes to 1.8 rather than 2, so you have the option of one more 1/3rd stop.

Those shots were, but I took others with shorter lenses.

I've still only shot volleyball that one time.

Bright Leica DC Lens 25-400mm F2.8-4.0

I tried these:
ISO 3200
f/2.8
1/800th

It's a little dark in the house, but cranking up the ISO helped. I'm going to have some fun in practice number two. I can't believe you got those with a 400 mm 2.8. Amazing.

Thanks!
I might be above zero on attempt number two.

I did find some indoor sports photos I had with the FZ1000. It was at the Southland Conf BB tournament at Katy's arena. I had it in manual mode with the shutter speed at 1/500, ISO 3200, and aperture of f/4 (maximum allowable for the focal length in this photo). The arena is probably brighter than some of the locations used for volleyball tournaments.

By 200mm (equivalent), the FZ1000 tops out at f/4

Yeah, I think that's the problem. Nice picture.

Those shots make me think the specs on my camera are bogus. At the same settings, my photos are greatly inferior, more than just operator error.

I've seen a lot of his work, all top quality.
