Lenses do depreciate over time but not as fast as bodies. But the mark II version can speed up the depreciation of mark I. I don't know that you have a Canon 70-200 non IS but the release of 70-200 2.8 IS II probably isn't helping your old lens value.

I bought a 70-200 non-IS for $800 a year ago. It was a great deal for a like new lens.

Now the IS version can be had for $950.

I think with the advent of great phone cameras as well as mirrorless, everyone seems to be dumping their big lenses. Probably a good for an amateur like me since I still need my 1Dm3 but isn't helping my resale.

After having dumped all of my dSLR gear for mirrorless a few years ago, I'm ready to go back to a full-size dSLR setup.

What do you feel like you are missing with mirrorless? Ive never used mirrorless so I'm curious

I think people who have a need for the big DSLRs have to stay put but I know tons of dads who have ditched for mirrorless because it is smaller and they don't need to take the same type of pics of their kids as I do. If my kids stopped playing volleyball, I would sell my gear immediately.

There were also tons of (rich) mommies lugging around big heavy lenses without knowing how to use it and they've all gone to phone cameras or mirrorless.

I have a question. I am upgrading my old Nikon D70s. It had a kit lens and some other lens I bought for 200 bucks. Needless to say, its a great setup as long as you are shooting outdoors in broad daylight. I now am in need of a camera for shooting home photos for real estate content. That said, I also want to use the camera for other general use...vacations, indoor pics at family events, outdoors, etc. I don't need super high end, but I do NOT want 'cheap'. I want equipment that is going to perform. Photos online won't really matter in terms of image quality, but other photos I take will (at least to me)

With that said, I have settled on a Canon 80D Camera. That part is the only part I'm sure of and needs no debate. I want to get the body only and buy two nice ish lenses. One for indoor shots, and one for everything else. So, I need one wide angle and one general lens. Here is what I ended up with:

So, with these lenses, you can get an idea of my price range, which is adjustable within reason. My biggest fear is photos that are too dark. I fight this on my current setup ALL. THE. TIME. I hate it. I don't ALWAYS have a tripod. Now, I'd like to focus on the wide angle decision first.

I know this camera has video capability, but it's not a HUGE deal to me that these non canon lenses will not work well with that with noise and autofocus speed. I'm mostly concerned with image quality, the ability to shoot tight rooms (wide angle) and light gathering ability.

If I run out of budget, the wide angle will take priority up to and including abandoning the 'other' lens.

So....thoughts?

We own the Canon 10-22 lens but do not use it very often. I like it, but it is not suited to my style of photography (sports and macro).

Also have Canon 24-105 F4 purchased used from Guitarsoup. Best everyday walk around lens.

BrazosDog02, if you are in B/CS during football season then stop by and you can give the lenses a test drive.

Since you mentioned shooting houses for real estate, you will likely need as wide a lens as you can get. The Canon 10-22 you mentioned is a very good wide lens for a crop sensor camera. I own one as well, and it is very sharp. Many photogs will say it should have the lofty "L" designation from Canon. It is not quite as fast as the Tokina 2.8, but should still do quite well. I used it a few years ago when we went to the Biltmore mansion in North Carolina, and it did well in some dim rooms there, and that was with an older 7D.

As far as another lens, I also have the 24-105 f4 that dubi mentioned. It is a great general purpose walkaround lens. It is a bit pricy, and Canon does make a less expensive version, but I have no experience with that one. You could probably find a used one like on KEH for a better deal.

Tamron makes a 28-75mm f2.8 lens that is generally pretty highly regarded. That would be a good walkaround lens. It is about half the price of the Canon 24-105 f4. It doesn't have as much zoom, however.

The Canon 18-135 can come as a kit lens with that camera, which could save a bit on it. I don't have any experience with that lens.

Why dead set on switching systems to go with that camera in particular? For real estate especially, you would probably be better off going with a full-frame camera and there are lots to be had used for the same price as an 80D in either brand.

I guess due to size, don't know about them, scared to buy used, afraid of cost for lenses...etc. No real reason otherwise. But, Iet's talk about a setup that would have equal image quality and performance in a full frame. If i can get better images with full frame for similar cost or a reasonable increase thats great.

What do you think I should look at?

On Adorama you can buy a 5 year warranty on used cameras and lenses. My 70D was an open box.

We buy all our electronics and computers refurbished. Dell and Apple are great with that.

Most of my photo equipment purchases are used. And I have a crapload...for real. It's embarrassing really. I'm not a hoarder, I promise.

I have used Craiglist, eBay, POTN, u43 forum, Sony forum, Fred Miranda. Knock on wood...never had any issues.

For Canon L lenses, I do look for the manufactured date. For camera bodies, I do obtain number of shutter actuation. I try to buy a body with less than 10,000 actuations.

I'm hoping you understand the concept of Full Frame vs. Cropped. 80D is a cropped body vs. 5D, 6D, 1DS, and 1DX are full frame bodies.

In essence, Canon with their 1.6X cropped sensor, 50mm really is closer to 80mm whereas on a full frame camera, 50mm = 50mm.

You want wide and you want light, you said.

Then I would think Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 is an excellent cost effective solution. Note, that lens won't work on a full frame body. Also, 17mm = 27.2mm on 80D. Still wide enough imo.

If you were to pick up a used 5D (there are 6 versions), you can pair it with Tamron 28-75mm f2.8.

Yes, 10-22mm is an ultra-wide zoom but the lens does not work on a full frame. Also, it's not f2.8.

Full frame UWA lens like 16-35mm f2.8 and f4 are a bit pricier.

I'll thrown in a wrench. Sigma 18-35mm f1.8 Art is a serious lens you can pair it with 80D for real estate photos. It can be had for $500 to $600 used.

I'm guessing your photos will be used for real estate? And the audience is realtors and home buyers/seller? Heck tell me to shut up if I'm wrong.

Your audience will be looking at the pictures on a cellphone screen or at the most, a 27 inch LCD monitor.. maybe iMac 4K.

You're definitely not having this printed on a I-10 billboard, right?

I think most any recent DSLR and mirrorless can pull this off with a right lens on it.

I'm still holding on to my 1DIII for sports. My mirrorless quite can't do it yet though Sony A9 is intriguing.

But, considering the cost of Sony lenses and the lens line up, I'm going to keep DSLR for sports and keep playing with u43 and its' cost effective bodies and lenses in addition to size advantage for travels.

Yes, but this is why I almost didn't mention what I was using it for. And this is why I'm here. To find the sweet spot. Yes...for real estate. Yes...that's how I make a living. But I also need/want it for my own personal use photography. I should say I want it for outdoor pictures, or indoor photos, family events, etc. I want a good camera/lens. I'm so tired of using subpar equipment that looks 'good enough'. I don't want 'good enough'. That's not how I roll. These images often get used in many places for advertising and marketing...sometimes just online, sometimes not.

Canon 5DSR (50.6mp - yes you can put up your picture on a billboard), Canon 16-35mm f2.8II, Canon 24-70mm f2.8II, Canon 70-200mm f2.8II

For real though, if you're going to stay with 80D, I highly recommend you look at Sigma Art lenses. for what you do, 18-35mm f1.8 and 50-100mm f1.8 will take care of your most needs. Sigma Art lenses are Canon L quality or better according to many.

And there's nothing wrong with 80D.

But when I use the camera at the shooting range, I'm moving around to much for it to be more than a nuisance.

Guitarsoup gave me a tutorial on how to hold my arms/shoulders and support the lens weight better and I'm learning to handle to for a few hours without a monopod. It does get easier.

Except for 20mm f2.8, I don't think any of the lenses you mentioned work on a FF as those are EF-S lenses.

Your used Canon FF options are 5D, now over 10 years old, 5DII ($800) - 9 years old.. 5D III, still fetching over $1000 used, 1Ds1-III, very old and most likely heavily used by a pro, and 6D...

Yes, I think you can do it with $2500 with used FF option... or 80D, and those 2 sigma lenses if you squeeze hard enough. Note, those Sigma Lenses are cropped lenses also, and won't work on a FF.

For your uses, resolution doesn't matter, but color and dynamic range will greatly matter. On both, Nikon is significantly better than Canon, as is Sony.

KEH has a 14 day no questions asked return policy. Easily the best used camera seller. I also regularly buy used, most recently my Nikon 14-24mm 2.8.

Canon 6D version 1 will run you about $1k used.
Canon 5D Mark II is in the $800 range.

Nikon D600 is also about $800 and probably what I would recommend. This has dual card slots, which is nice so if a card is corrputed, your data is safe on card #2. It did have some shutter issues early in life, but Nikon will fix for free.
Nikon D610 is about $1200 and really the same camera as a 600.
D750 run in the 1200-1400 range. Definitely the camera to get as a stretch goal.

Sony has some nice offerings, but I am not as familiar. Finding support for Sony is much more difficult than Canon or Nikon.

As far as lenses, the way you can go would vary. I would probably get a Rokinon 14mm 2.8. It is cheap (3-400) as wide as you would want but manual focus. For architecture, not really a big deal. Also important is a good tripod so you can have level shots. For everyday lens with the kids, probably a Tamron 24-70 2.8 or the like. You also would probably want an ultrawide zoom. Tokina also has a 17-35mm that runs about 400 used.

Doesn't include a tripod, which I would highly suggest for real estate, but that's a pretty great lineup for your needs. Then eventually save up to upgrade to a D750 (they will drop in price) or add a 70-200.

Using an a9 for the weekend, the 20fps is amazing and the AF is lightning-fast.

That said, 20fps is complete overkill, it's incredible how quickly you fill a card.

The new D850 is going to do 30fps at 8MP.

I wish Sony would do something similar with the a9. I'm shooting a powderpuff flag football game at the Cotton Bowl tonight and will be shooting in JPEG. While it's cool to be able to shoot 24MP raws that quickly, give me the option of a bigger buffer and more speed with a smaller file size.

The D850 is going to be a ridiculous all-around camera.

If i was in TX...I would let you use my 18-35mm... it doesnt get used and im thinking about selling it. I dont even own a Canon crop body. I use it on Sony....will get used next weekend, going to try Milky way during the new moon!

30fps at 8MP is basically 4k video with each frame saved individually. Wonder what the difference in processing power is between modern DSLR cameras and the Apollo space program.

Also...what is the benefit of the ff d600 or 800 over the crop sensor 80D? Wider angle? More capability?

You get more real estate on your image. So for wide angle, that is important. For most everyone's silly everyday photography it does not matter.
