Thinking of switching from Xbox to PS

I'm still on the last generation Xbox (Xbox One s) and want to join the latest generation so I can play the latest battlefield and borderlands. I don't really have any online friends to play with anymore and it seems PS has more exclusive games I'd like to try (spiderman, wolverine,...).

I'm either playing BF2042 or Skyrim lately but also enjoy the mass effect series, fallout, and that style of games.

Anyhoo, anyone have any strong advice regarding staying Xbox versus switching to PS? I imagine this topic comes up here and there and first scrolled thru 10 pages to look for this question.

Thanks in advance

PS5 Pro is the best gaming experience available to console gamers, right now. As I'm sure you're aware, most modern games release with a Quality, Performance and Balance mode. With a PS5 Pro, we're basically getting Quality mode graphics/resolution at Performance mode FPS. I cannot stand anything under 45fps, and I love playing games at 4K, so it's an easy answer for me.

Also, as you said, the exclusives for PS are better. I'm not a Halo fan and the next Elder Scrolls game won't be out until either the next generation or the next next generation.

Outside of that, what particular features are you looking to compare between the two? I can't stand the Xbox GUI and I find the PS5 one to be easier to navigate. But that may just be because I hardly ever boot up my Xbox.

The two things XBox had over the PS5 were their exclusives and the value prop of GamePass. Both consoles are starting to edge away from total exclusivity, but it appears that XBox will be doing so in a bigger way than Sony. You'll probably still see some timed exclusives for some major titles, but not as much as in previous years, and even most of the "exclusives" will likely be same day available on PC. With respect to GamePass, Microsoft just announced a price increase for the top end GamePass Ultimate from $20/month to $30/month, which kind of degrades the appeal a little bit.

Edit: the only caveat is that you mention Skyrim and Fallout, both of which were made by Bethesda, which is owned by Microsoft. If you go Sony, it's possible that you may have to wait a bit before TESVI or a Fallout 5 come to PlayStation, though TESVI is at least a couple of years away, and a Fallout 5 is almost certainly years out beyond that.

If TESVI is released this decade... I'm tempted to offer a poop slap bet that it won't, but I'm not THAT confident. I would be surprised if we do, though.

It's sad to say as someone that's been in the XBOX ecosystem since the beginning, but if you're not already on the current generation, there's no reason to get invested. Demand is through the floor, but they're still raising prices. It's fanbase is on life support in the US and nonexistent abroad. XBOX studios now make their games crossplatform, gamepass is moving out of it's "acquire market share" phase into "start paying the bills" phase, so the value is severely diminished (I just canceled with the increase), and quite frankly the AAA XBOX exclusives that have released (before the cross-platform point) have been few and far between, and largely underwhelming. It's not 2010. XBOX Live is not the gold standard of reliability and online play while PSN lags far behind. I've pretty much lost all hope for the XBOX division. What's the compelling reason to buy an XBOX these days? There really hasn't been one for a while now, but gamepass kept me sated. Now that's gone - justifying price increases by taking the worst practices of cable TV, bundling things I don't want and never asked for in with the subscription (fortnite and (limited to prior generation games) ubisoft subscriptions).

I'm honestly considering getting a PS5 Pro before battlefield launches, but we'll see. The silver lining of using gamepass the last few years is that I don't really have a lot of purchases tying me to the console. But I don't typically make rash purchases and I don't really have a compelling need to switch right now. But there's zero chance I'll be buying XBOX next gen - that ship has sailed. The biggest thing I'll miss are the offset joysticks.

I've also been mulling this upgrade for some time because I'm still on an Xbox One which is probably considered ancient at this point. I was not aware of the GamePass sub increase. Here are the particulars on that for anyone interested:

Quote:

The Ultimate tier saw a 50% increase from $19.99 to $29.99, justified by additions like Ubisoft+ Classics, Fortnite Crew (starting November 18), more day-one releases (over 75 per year), and improved cloud streaming at up to 1440p.

They've at least attempted to bolster the price increase but 50% is a bit much. I don't care about Fortnite and cloud streaming so I would be paying 50% more for day-one releases of which I have no idea how many of those I would actually care about - I'm guessing maybe 10% of them.

The main reason I would keep it is because it's cross platform to your PC which I've actually used before because depending on the game their is a preferable format between my 65in TV and my 27in monitor. If a game I want to play on my PC is on GamePass, then I can get it on GamePass and then cast to my PC and play it there.

It also looks like they killed the PC version of GamePass which I never used anyway.

Sony has a lot of great exclusives of which I've played a couple now that they've made their way to Steam. This is a point in Xbox's favor if Sony is going to continue doing that. I don't need to play a game on day 1 as I only buy games on sale or play through GamePass.

Not sure what I want to do.

Edit: The PS5 hardware is also quite large which normally wouldn't matter but I might actually have to finagle my setup to handle it.

I've been on Xbox since the 360 days.... wife got me a PS5 this past Christmas and it's just better. Their PS Plus subscription has caught up to Gamepass in terms of quantity & quality of "free" games, and it's probably passed it now that Gamepass is doing a major price hike.

And I personally wouldn't get the Pro unless you just have to have it. The PS5 plays great at a much lower price point.

BF6 has cross play so I'll be enjoying that with all my Xbox friends next week, I'll just be doing it on the PS5.

Quick follow up. The Mid-Tier level of PS Plus is probably where you should be if you get a PS5. A subscription is required to play online but the mid tier is LOADED with great games.

The PS5 Spiderman remaster just got added. The recent God of War and GOW Ragnarok are there, Ratchet and Clank, Returnal, Uncharted. I'm having a blast playing through 1 or 2 at a time.

BF6 and the upcoming GTA6 are the only new games I plan on buying... I'm too busy catching up on all the PS games I've missed over the years.

I completely disagree on the PS5 vs PS5 Pro.

There are two different arguments:

  • Upgrading from PS5 to PS5 Pro
  • Purchasing new PS5 Pro with no PS5
I can accept if some people are fine with their PS5 and don't see the price for a PS5 Pro upgrade as worth the cost, as well as forklifting everything and migrating all data from one device to another. But if you are starting from scratch, we're talking $200. Obviously, we are all in different financial situations and I would never tell someone to spend money they don't have budgeted for a toy. But if that $200 isn't putting your monthly bills in danger, I think the price is worth the difference in performance.

But again, I've already said I am someone who can't stand dropping below 45fps. I still replay Bloodborne (also a PS exclusive), which is locked at 30fps, but I only do that because I have no other choice.

I would be getting the Pro for sure. If anything, for future proofing.

That $70 billion Activision acquisition is going to end up killing the XBox brand.

I'm right there with you on that. My biggest frustration with this generation is that devs keep trying to maximize graphics thinking that 30 fps is OK. It really isn't.

That being said, I think that's my biggest reason why the pro wasn't very attractive for me. I'm knee deep in PS4 exclusives right now and all of them have been given FPS & Res boosts on the base PS5. They all look and play really great.

I'm about to hop into Alan Wake II via PS+ October games so we'll see how I feel about a current gen game performance wise. And the big one, if Rockstar announces a 45-60 fps version of GTA6 that's only available on the Pro... definitely might be time for an upgrade!

I don't think it makes much sense to invest in the Xbox ecosystem unless you really have a massive library that you absolutely need to carry forward at this point.

Microsoft is slowly transitioning out of hardware. There will likely be another Xbox, but it will be more niche and they're not going to take a loss on it.

Microsoft cares more about selling software, so they are going third party to recoup their investments. Xbox hardware never made them any money, it was just a money pit.

So from that perspective, buying a PS5 is a sensible move and you will eventually get access to the Microsoft titles you may have enjoyed in the past (like Gears, Halo, and Forza).

As for the PS5 Pro vs. PS5 - if you have the extra money, I think it's worth it. But if you stick with just a PS5, it's also a great console too and you'll get a good experience. So depends on how much you think it's worth it.

Yeah I know GamePass gets a lot of attention, but the PS plus tiers are low key awesome. GamePass got day and date games, but if you are new to the PS5 ecosystem then the extra PS Plus tiers have amazing Sony first party content for new comers to catch up on.

Incredible value to play all the classic Sony first party games like Spiderman, God of War, Last of Us, etc., etc. So many incredible games. Microsoft's first party just doesn't have that same quality, so while day and date is nice, the catalogue is IMHO stronger on PS Plus.

I bought a Series X for EA CFB 25 and having a catalog of Xbox and 360 games. I like the familiarity and ability to play old games, but if I did it again today I'd buy a PS5.

Hate the idea that there will only be one viable console, but MSFT just doesn't want to be in the game anymore.

As a single player kind of gamer the PS exclusives are tough to beat, there's no shortage of incredible new single player games plus the PS5 remasters to play.

Since you can play pretty much any of the Xbox console games on PC...just own a PC and then get the PS. I'm thinking about doing the same. I have like 3 Xbox ones in my house and my custom PC but if I have to get a new console...I think it's Playstation moving forward.

Yeah, now that I've upgraded my PC to all of the latest gaming rig standards, I've decided to just go with PS5 Pro. The 50% price increase on GamePass sealed the deal for me. Also, I'm exclusively a single player gamer and it sounds like that's where all of the best single player content resides.

Just wanted to point out this is yet another Nerdery thread where the OP asks a question, a lot of us nerd out and give detailed responses, and OP never responds.

No idea if they are even reading the comments and/or if any of this was even helpful.

On the plus side, we at least answered the question. Other boards would've gone off on tangents about the relative strengths of the Amiga vis a vis the Atari Lynx.

So I finally pulled the trigger yesterday and bought the PS5 Pro. Arrived this morning. Hooked it up and It's gorgeous. Already like their UI much better than Xbox.

And the PS Plus Premium sub is such a better value than the GamePass Premium sub it's almost a joke. Less than half the cost of GamePass with all of the PS content, most of which I've never played, along with the entire Sony movie catalog. Controller stick placement will take a minute to get used to but the overall controller layout and functionality is superior.

Cancelling GamePass today ahead of my renewal in two days.

Bought this for my bday and to get ahead of any Christmas backup although I doubt too many are going to pay this price point.

PS plus premium is a steal if you've never played their games before, you have instant assess to some of the best games released over the last decade it'd be tough to know where to start lol

I've very much enjoyed my Pro so far, PSSR 2.0 coming out next year will make it even better

My only complaint so far is the battery in the controller is trash. Lost about 70% of charge after only an hour and a half of so of playing. I'm going to have to buy a much longer charging cord than the one it came with and just play it with plugged in. Not that big of a deal I guess but the cord it came with is too short for my setup.

Yeah the battery life leaves a lot to be desired, although I get about 4-5 hours for mine which tends to be about my limit in terms of how long I can play in a single sitting.

I wonder if it depends on the game. First game I'm playing is Ghost of Tsushima which has a lot of rumble in the controller. Kind of wild you can hear the wind from the controller or they able to mimic that sound with the rumble. I guess there is a speaker in it. Don't know, I haven't even looked thoroughly at it.

Enjoy! I had the same experience last year getting a PS5. The PS+ game catalog is ridiculous if you missed those games during the PS4 era. And better yet, they all play better than they did when they first launched (the semi rebooted God of War playing at 60 frames on PS5 was really something).

Sony is having a $100 off sale on all PS5's starting 11/21 (not too great after they recently increased prices by $50). I'm strongly considering upgrading to the Pro since I play BF6 and soon GTA6.

My only hesitation is how much life this console really has left until the next generation comes out?

PS6 is rumored to launch in 2027. That's only 2 years away. Do you already have a PS5?

I purchased a PS5 Pro last year but have no regrets, however I will pretty much always trade-up for the latest device, even if I only get 3-4 years of the previous one. Usually costs me a few hundred dollars each time after the trade in. So I will be there day 1 for PS6.

PS5 base is still a great console and the Pro isn't necessary if you already have a PS5. But I have enjoyed all the improvements I've gotten with the PS5 Pro.

The PS5 in general isn't going to suddenly stop being supported once PS6 comes out though, in fact I doubt there will be any PS6 exclusives until way later in the generation.

But it may make sense to wait in your case, just depends on how much you value GTA6 and all the other games coming next year to look the best on PS5 Pro vs. PS5.

If you haven't gotten the PS5 yet I would go with the Pro.

You can always trade in your PS5 pro for a higher price when PS6 comes out or whenever you're ready to upgrade to a PS6 (doesn't need to be at launch)

Some good Black Friday deals either way
