In general, I am a fan of seasoning onions. Underrated cooking technique. Good call to do it for the beans.

I've started using zing-zing also because unlike Clamato, it doesn't have high fructose corn syrup if that's something you care about.

Good point. If I were consuming it on a regular basis, it would be more of a concern. I might try zing zang in the next batch.

The beans look more appetizing in a bowl where you can actually see them.

Next time I will brown the bacon first before cooking the onions. I found it didn't work very well per the original instructions.

This is a must that I discovered after making them the first time. Onions cook way faster than the bacon, and I think crispying the bacon a bit is better than rubbery bacon.

My wife and I made a pot (half of the recipe, since it's only the two of us) and they were great. I had forgotten how good they are.

Tried something new this past weekend for the LSU game. Don't crucify me if it's sacrilegious…

Wife and I shoot a couple deer and buy some beef each year and make our own ground meat. 50/50 deer/beef. I threw a pound of our ground meat mix into the beans and it was awesome. Wife commented that it makes it feel like more of a complete meal.

I love the beans either way. We make them a dozen times a year. Will continue to add our ground meat mix into the recipe.

I add ground beef about half of the time I make these...it's a perfect winter meal with cornbread!

I always keep at least a quart of what we call "B-1 Beans" ready to go in the freezer.

Thanks again to B-1 83 for a great recipe!

Next time try some venison chorizo in it. So many way to make these into a meal on their own.

My boys have some unique food allergies and can't have beans from a can. We always have to use dry beans. Will just have to adapt it.

The fido recipe I linked uses dry beans. No reason you can't do dry beans and soak them, then do this recipe either.

Happy Sunday after a long week/month. My first colonoscopy is Wednesday so this seems like a good last meal, ha ha. Went easier on the cilantro since husband is one of those non-cilantro people.

Is substituting bloody mary mix instead of chlamato juice okay? Not crazy about the MSG and HFC in chlamato juice.

Yes. I've done it before with zing zang and so have others.

Made this the other day, exactly as directed on first page, except I added in andouille sausage. I used 2x 30oz cans of Kluner's pinto beans, did not strain

Served with rice and cornbread.. excellent.

made serrano pepper poppers with the left over peppers for the bronco game the other day too.

Forgive me, my TexAgs brethren. I may have to go to this or ZingZang. My shellfish allergies are slowly catching up to me. For ever it was just shrimp that got me, but my recent trip to a lobster food truck showed otherwise. There isn't enough clam juice in Clamato to be major, but I'll have to watch it.
