Here's a big 'un.

Nickel is for size.

I tapped him on the back, he is all puffed up now.

Found this little guy in Lipscomb County TX last June.

Found this fella in Yoakum County TX last summer as well.

We saw so many of them I got tired of taking pictures last summer all the way from Eastern NM through the Panhandle up to Ellis County KS. We were out in the field this last week and the same story, they were plentiful from Eastern NM through the Panhandle at least.

Have never seen one in the wild.

Dad told me they used to be all over the country when he was growing up around Goliad/Victoria.
He and my uncles used to catch them and sell them to a local taxidermist for a nickel a piece. Definitely part of the problem.

I grew up in Arlington in the early 70s. Used to play with them all the time... And by all the time I mean like seeing in dozens a week all over the place. More common than the green anole is now in The Woodlands.

Yall are good at showing the different varieties.

I've thought about putting in for the Matador a couple times, but I think my wife would shoot me. I used to love tracking turkeys out there.

It'll be interesting to see how their numbers react to the fire ant decline due to the drought and the influx of the hair crazy ants.
I think that the horny toads live on the large red and black ants around here. Of course, if the fire ants kill them off, then the horny toads won't fare very well.

They were everywhere in Amarillo when I was a kid. I at one time had 20 or so that I kept in my backyard. There not too common these days.

I probably mentioned earlier on the thread that I spotted about 15-20 on a 160 acre field last year, so roughly one every 10 acres that I spotted from a tractor seat. This is in SW Randall County. My guess is that there were many more than that out there. A lot more than I've seen in the past few years. Hoping for a revival.

I haven't seen a horny toad in years. I remember catching them when I lived in the panhandle. I once caught a baby one during recess at school during 1st grade.
