Was about to close the barn door when I thought I saw a bug running into the barn. Turns out it was this tiny Texas Horned Lizard. I grabbed him for a photo then let him go outside.

thats a little dude right there.
I don’t say this in a braggedocious way. But it’s true. I’ve been right about everything.

A true Texas native. I can't imagine how tough it is for each individual to survive. Somehow they manage to hang on. An absolute unit. Godspeed.

Oddly enough, once harvesters reestablish themselves, it's not a given horned lizards will reestablish. Lots of need work on this issue.

We have an absolute TON of harvester ants on our place in Gonzales County. Haven't seen a horned toad since the mid 80's when I was growing up. Sure would like to get a few going. Are there any relocation programs?

Played with lots of them as a kid in west Texas. Almost daily. And if angered/scared, they really did "spit" blood. I saw them do it a couple of times. Can't remember if blood came from their eyes or mouth.
But if treated gently and you could turn them over and rub their bellies, they would lay there like a dog getting his belly rubbed.

Growing up in Alamogordo, NM and Laredo from 1965 to 1970, it was almost a daily occurrence to see these little critters. We had plenty of harvester ants and those hellish fire ants hadn't made their appearance. Does anybody know how these lizards are faring in those parts of the state where it is pretty dry and the fire ants don't do as well?
I will be visiting Palo Duro Canyon on Labor Day weekend and hope to see some and get some pictures.

Used to see them weekly around Northwest Austin. Always liked watching them take out ants.

I wonder if predation by feral hogs has a noticeable impact on horned frog populations.
I could see them getting gobbled up easily.

They are still out here. There are more than a few I see up in the Guadalupes too.

Nice one!

Looks like a horned lizard that's a different species than the Texas.

ETA, looks like a greater short horned lizard.

Took these back in May in NW SA. Small strip of dirt covered by some mulch in the back yard. Saw the mulch was disturbed. Went to push it back in place and spotted this guy. Seen quite a few other similar holes since then, but it could also be the deer and squirrels digging around.
