Need some guidance. Last year we did Keystone and got caught in a -20F blizzard. It was horrible. But the 1/2 day of ski lessons the kids got they enjoyed. So hoping to get another season out of the kids ski clothes we want to try again.
We can only make a trip during spring break, March 8-16. Looking at New Mexico and lower elevation than Keystone. Is Ruidoso too far south for that time of year? Is Anglefire a better bet? Are there other places to consider? Kids are 5 and 7.
Super vague, my dude. None of us can guarantee a blizzard-less experience.
Are you wanting to maximize the week skiing? Or just keep them in 1/2 lessons? Anything you want outside of skiing? Budget? Flying, driving - do you have a major airport with lots of routes?
There's endless options - more so if you're open to BC/AB in Canada.
That said, Silver in N Idaho has an indoor water park. That's a guarantee if snow fun bombs for you. We're off to Sunriver, OR tomorrow. We ski Bachelor, then play at the Cove (indoor swim park) all evening. 6 year olds favorite destination on earth. Cute little downtown where we grab dinner, ice cream and ice skate.
Not sure how I am being vague. I am asking for recommendations for skiing in NM over spring break. I mentioned the only time we tried a skiing trip was last year at Keystone and got caught in a blizzard, it was super cold, most of the plans got canceled, wife got altitude sickness. It was a miserable trip but we want to try again. I want to try and keep to lower elevation bases to help the wife.
At no time did I ask for anything outside of New Mexico. As for how I get there, what I do there, or what my budget is, that is irrelevant for this conversation.
Maybe there are no good options in NM for my criteria and that is a suitable answer.
If you really want to ski, New Mexico sucks. Taos, maybe. But snow is always dicey there, especially in March.
If you're not that serious about skiing, do 2-3 days at Angelfire or Red River.
Also, PS, altitude is still pretty damn high. You need altitude for snow, especially in the Rockies.
Lower altitude? Go to Whistler or Heavenly. Top of Whistler is 7,165ft. Top of Heavenly is 10k. You're sleeping at about 10k in summit county.
Top of red river is 10,315.
