Call me a total chode but sometimes you guys that are "locals" and regulars appear to sensationalize everything there is about snow and skiing.

Don't get me wrong. The purpose of this thread is for us to be be cathartic, and discuss our experiences, but sometimes there's a little too much of "BROA WE WRRE SHREDDING taters all day, omg can't believe people live outside 80mile radius of mountains."

Call it jealousy, or whatever, but there's definitely a "eff you guys I live up here unlike you flatlander Aggies" attitude.

Touche. Not even sure why I posted this other than… yeah, it's cool. You skied powder on your day off. Neat. You played hooky and did the same thing. Also neat.

See you next year with tips and tricks and notes and advice other then.. "I get to ski 19x more than all of you, bow down"
Solid unsolicited early morning rant!

Late night more like it.

Really just pissed that I don't get to ski more often and that it's become one of the most expensive hobbies on the planet.

Trade Off

Live in the mountains and have 3 jobs and ski all the time but have little to no life outside work and play w little to no savings or retirement or live in flat land and have 1 job but make enough to travel etc and save up to not work your whole life.

For us mountain people, we want to live while we are young and worry about retirement etc when were old. The thing that scares me most is waiting to live life and then when having the ability to do as I please end up like my dad w a brain tumor that takes away those plans.

Living life is different for everyone. I spent a lot of my young adult life not making money due to school and surgery residency. Didn't start working until 31 years old and I don't regret it one bit. I enjoy going to work and provide for my family to have and do things I was never able to at a young age. My parents did a good job also and wouldn't trade anything I did growing up even though the first time I got on skis was my senior year of high school. The second time was 8 years later.

Purg and WC. I never really thought much about tree skiing glades before this year but I had a great time that day at WC just charting my own path down the hill. That quiet hiss is strangely satisfying. It's one of those sports where you have de make your opportunities and either dedicate your youth or later adulthood to it, (or hope your parents are pretty loaded). I got the late start but am trying to make up ground while I still have good knees.

Nice thing is skiing is a sport that you can do for a long time. I'm 54 and still ski double blacks no problem. Although I don't have as many in me per day anymore.

If it makes you feel any better I live in CO and was only able to get 8 days in this year with no true powder days.
I live near 3 resorts and do not ski. Lots more other activities to enjoy for me.

I am kind of motivated to take one annual spur of the moment trip now that my son is 10 and can basically hang with me anywhere on the mountain.

Perhaps while the market is crazy I need to just focus on piling up cash for that little cabin to get closer to a situation where I can do my remote work there in the high country.

Closed my drain down with Friday at Mt. Ashland and then hit the closing day at Schweitzer with the family today.

Looking forward to next season, TBD on where home mountain will be.

Local con-group started a Go-Fund Me to buy it and keep it "local."

Pearls were clutched.

I'm happy it's staying on Ikon.

Day 30 for us was Timberline with friends. "Teacher grading" day had schools closed, so ski. What's education says Oregon.

Any front rangers get some yesterday? Closed out the season with a foot at Loveland getting refreshed all day. My kids' first legit pow day and apparently lots of other kids' too. First run there were parents everywhere getting their powder days ruined, yelling at toddlers to "stand up and stay in my tracks!". It was hilarious. My 7 and 9 year old figured it out eventually and we got a couple great runs. On to mtb season!

Hell yeah. What a storm for CO.

One last hurrah here. I have a gravel race around Whitney next Sunday. So, Bend Thursday: will ride to keep the legs fresh, ski Bach. Friday to Tahoe and ride. Saturday morning skiing Palisades. Drive to Alabama Hills for another final shakeout. Then opening race of the season.

Hell of a ski year. Might get a few summer turns on T-Line, but just a novelty.

Morning calls. A quick dip from PDX to Sisters for a ride. More work early, early, balls early, then ski and on to Tahoe. I don't think I'll ski Saturday as I need to make packet pick-up in Alabama Hills. But we'll see.

To no end, but we're done this weekend on Meadows with a super chill camp and pond skim.

This week, skied Bach one last day. Skied Palisades. Raced the eastern Sierra. Then a MTB recovery around Bend. Very grateful for the life we made.

She's in public K. I'm remote. Wife is part-time (she works nine 12s a month).

We take turns. I solo yolo'd to a bike race last week. She's in Palm Springs for 5 days with Friends.

But also, it's K. I pull her out a bunch. I won't as much in later grades, but for K, her Harvard chances aren't being impacted.

I indulge a lot (15-20 hours of hobby a week), but I take more from my job (PST arbitrage, we're admittedly FI due to prior life choices) and drill the dad/husband role when I'm on. Full gazz fam man.

Any recs on Crested Butte base lodging? Looking at options at:

The Grand Lodge - couple blocks off base, but has ski valet, more of suite style unit than true condo

The Plaza - largest of the options, maybe a little closer, but likely without the ski valet

In offseason news, we're moving to Sandpoint. My commute time to the slope is going from an hour and 15 to 25 minutes.

The Grand Lodge is actually closer to the main part of the base than the Plaza. The Plaza is downhill a bit so youre having to make your way back uphill to Red Lady and Silver Queen (either walking up or skiing down to Peachtree and weaving your way across to the other lifts ).

Grand Lodge is also right next to the bus stop for busses into town.

Of course you'll walk to/from the slopes vs. Skiing right up to the Plaza (or close).

It all really depends on what you want to do when you're there.

Thanks that's helpful info. I wasn't sure if there was skiable access to a lift off the Plaza, so with that being the case, even if its a short lift to get over to the main ones, that works for us. Google maps shows a town shuttle stop in front of the Plaza as well, is that not the case?
dvldog

The bus stop at the Plaza doesn't go straight into town. You can take a bus (blue) from there to the "main" bus stop and then hop over to the town shuttle (green). Or the walk isn't too terribly bad if you decide to do that instead (probably 10min or so).

Also as I'm sure you're seeing, the Plaza isn't strictly "ski-in/ski-out" as there are condos between there and the mountain, but it's definitely closer than the Grand Lodge and you'll be on the mountain much quicker.

Regardless of what I posted last night, you might find that the walk from the Plaza to the main lifts (Red Lady Express, Silver Queen) isn't too terrible if you'd rather get up the mountain as quick as possible.

We always stayed in condos right off the magic carpet/Red Lady Express so I'm admittedly not the best person to give advice about staying at the Plaza.
