I forget what county you're in? Is that from your place?

Northeast Bastrop county. That's my driveway. It must have shed recently, it had rich vivid color. The crappy dusk lighting pictures don't capture it.

We mostly see Texas rate snakes but the tighter patterning and greyer lights instead of more orangish tell me this is a prairie rat snake.

I thought so and that's why I asked. That's an interesting area where two subspecies of Great Plain ratsnake meet and can show characteristics of either or both.

What kind of snake is that? Googled back tail and it went to a rattlesnake.

Yes, the first part of my post was a response to previous discussion about rattlesnakes at Big Bend Ranch.

The rest was my own snake encounter at home with a rat snake.

Moved a Black rat snake across the road today. Did not expect to see one this time of year in East Tennessee. Of course, it was around 65 and it was on the blacktop.

I ordered the snake in a restaurant in China one time for S&Gs, and it did NOT taste like chicken. That serpent tasted like the devil.

I've been all over China and eaten all kinds of messed up junk over there.. so I'm sure I have tried the Shih Tzu, Char Pei, or Chow Chow-- and it probably tasted like chicken... but this was definitely snake. The menu translation said snake, the picture was a snake, and the platter was unmistakably a whole snake BBQd and cut up so you could scrape the meat off the skin and spit out the little grizzle riblets.

Only time I've ever seen an indigo was in College Station during my undergrad years…probably 04-ish. I was pulling weeds in a flower bed in front of a house in Pebble Creek…we saw some pretty big whatever kind of lizards all the time, but this time when I stuck my hand down, the movement through the landscape plants made me think we're about to see the biggest lizard any of us had ever seen. I jumped up to see what was gonna jump out behind the shrubs by the house, and it was a black/purple snake at least 4' long, standing up like a cobra looking at us. By the time anyone could react (we thought we'd get a shovel and chop it), it was gone down a hole right up against the house…I was so freaked out thinking that I pretty much laid my hands down on that guy to pick weeds. I had no idea what kind of snake it was until this thread. Now I'm glad he got away. Still kinda freaked out that I almost grabbed him by accident.

Thats way east and north for an indigo. Sure it wasn't a racer?

I guess I can't be sure, because it was so long ago, but having learned so much from this thread, that's what I think it was. It was a beautiful snake either way.

I think you saw a coachwhip, which are common around BCS and can be nearly black.

Just down the road in Hempstead probably close to 30 years ago, I worked on a job where we were digging out burned out metal from an old burn pile to load into roll offs. We had black racers or coachwhips coming out of the pile like crazy every time we would disturb it. The helper kept grabbing them and pitching them off into the woods to keep them from getting crushed by the equipment, but the backhoe operator was terrified of them. The helper pulled one out that had crawled through the pull tab from a beer can and had it wrapped around its body cutting into the skin. He brought it over to the trucks and held it while I cut the tab off with snips.

When he took it back to release into the woods, we met the operator heading back up the hill in the opposite direction. Apparently another snake had crawled up under the backhoe and the operator bailed out and left. When the helper hopped in it to move it, it stalled when he tried to shift into reverse. After some trouble shooting, we figured out it was a blown fuse and replaced it. As soon as he shifted into reverse it died again. Same process and blew the last fuse he had. When we opened up the panel around the shifter to figure out what was going on, there was the snake curled up on top of the transmission, curled so tightly around the shifter that the electrical actuator was blowing fuses instead of shifting the transmission.

We ended up shutting down for the day because we couldn't reach the snake to pull him out without dismantling the backhoe. I got to call my boss and tell him our project had been shut down early for the day by a snake. Not sure he entirely believed us…
