My dad died and left several guns. I have a choice between these two. Anyone have a preference? I really like the Browning but the Henry is cool looking.

Which Henry is it?
Is the Browing a grade 1 or 2?

Might also consider if the browning is Belgium made. Maybe go with whichever is more sentimental?

The Browning was made in Japan

Grade 2 has checkering. Grade 1 does not.
No Browning BL22's were made in Belgium. They started building them in 1969. All were made in Miroku Japan.

Ok Thanks. No checkering. I thought the grades were based on the metal Some look like stainless This one is not

My dad was not rich. Most of his guns were not valuable But I did take an old Ithaca 20 guage. Believe it was also made in Japan. And, I don't even think the wood stock is real wood...It shoots good, though and has engravings of duck and pheasants on the side

They are both great guns. Both are of good quality and good fit and finish. The Browning on the used side will carry a little more $$ value….
The Browning does have a short lever throw of only 33 degrees which makes it faster to cycle and shoot….. if that even matters to you.
The Browning was based on looks off of the traditional old Winchester lever guns.
The Henry Golden boy is based off the old Henry's.
It should have an octagon barrel?
Personally I like the Henry because of the traditional looking Octagon barrel. I also like that is built here in the U.S. They also have very smooth actions.
Really it depends on your personal preference. They are both great shooters and well built.
Get the one you like. Have fun with it!

And always remember this!

If you can get them side by side. Make sure both are unloaded and magazine and chambers empty!!
Make sure of this. Do not assume they are unloaded!
Check them!
Then work the action and trigger on both. You should feel the Henry is noticeably smoother imho.

The Browning is, hands down, a better rifle than the Henry. Get the Browning.

(The Henry Golden Boy is simply a brass plated Zamak (pot metal) receiver cover.)

For investment purposes/collecting I like the Browning but they have not really been increasing in value much over the last five years. ( in fact have declined a little).
For a shooterI like the balance of the Henry. The action and trigger imho are smoother and crisper imho.
But I like the short action throw of the Browning.
Older BL22's also have been known to have extractor issues. Mine had that issue.
As I said in my first post… Get the one that appeals to you the most.
If you plan on having it and passing it down to children and want it to retain value the Browning is the ticket.

ETA. The Henry does not lend itself to scope mounting. The Browning action is short but there are some scope mounts for it.

Agree with you on aspects of the Browning. But to be fair Zamak is known to be a much higher quality, more highly refined, and a much more precise material than traditional pot metal alloys.
Walther Arms uses it as well.

Both are beautiful rifles and either will be a great keepsake.

Browning here! First Henry .22 I saw had a plastic - Synthetic front sight. No thanks! You can always tell your buddies you're still looking for that Marlin 39a your dream lever gun.

Wish I had that one! Same action though and same reliability. So, question? The Henry, Browning or Marlin?

Holy cow. In this order:
1.) Marlin 39 or Winchester 9422M - built in U.S.
2.) Browning BL22
3.) Henry .22 Golden Boy - They do have iron sights

Just my opinion.

Totally agree with your order. The Henry I referred to was the basic model .22 when first introduced and it did have the plastic sight. Henry has done a great job in promoting their lever guns and they've resurrected the popularity of lever guns again. love to see the success their having.

I agree.
I am a traditionalist and like the older quality stuff.
I will admit I have a .22 fetish!

Damn, now I have .22 envy. Have the Browning but need the Henry, well, because

I don't have a Henry .22 Golden Boy, but I do have a Browning BL-22 Grade 2. I love everything about the BL-22 - looks/style, fit and finish, balance & handling, compactness and weight, lever throw - EXCEPT the trigger. It has a pretty poor trigger, too heavy and gritty feeling. Its other qualities are so nice that I kind of accept the disappointing trigger. The accuracy of mine is ok but not stellar. I've only shot it with its iron sights though. I never wanted to put a scope on it to wring out its full potential because I felt scoping it would ruin its tiny size, light weight, and nice handling qualities, and look totally out of place on top of its compact receiver. Plus, I enjoy it as an iron sights gun.

If you have a memory with your dad around one of the guns, pick that one.

I would guess you never plan on getting rid of it, so resale value really doesn't play into the decision.

Some of my most prized possessions don't really have a dollar value to other people, and I don't care.

Same here. I have an old Colt Police Positive that's pretty banged up so its condition really hurts its value.
However it was my dad's first carry weapon when he got into law enforcement....it was given to my dad by a LEO that was retiring as my dad had no money to buy a new one. He then lent it to his first deputy ever cause the guy couldn't afford a pistol. It then went to another new deputy for the same reason. I wanted to be an officer and was broke so my dad gave it to me to use.
I lent it to my cousin who became a deputy constable and needed a carry weapon.
Now I have the old guy back and all those people that carried it have passed but me. I often think of all the hands that touched it and all the hips it hung on and all the places it went and what it witnessed.
It's not really worth didly but it's worth a lot to me.

Ha. My dad engraved his name and social security number on the side of the receiver. It's not worth much
