I can see where you think it may be…

But I think it's a house cat.

A jaguarundi's tail is much longer and thicker.

Me and my buddy saw one 15 years ago through a scope about 200 yards away in Premont, TX. It was sitting with a long tail and a weird looking face.

We didn't know what it was. It was too big to be a house cat, definitely not a bob cat, wrong colors to be an ocelot, too small to be a cougar, and definitely not a coyote.

We made the decision not to blast it for fear of shooting something endangered that we hadn't heard of.

I'll stick by with what me and my homie saw.

It's pretty early in 2025 for Post-Of-The-Year, but this is a strong candidate. Well played, good sir, well played.

That area is a known Jaguarundi hotspot, pretty sure it a remnant population there. Could also be the Bass Family has some imported to their ranches. Or it was a feral housecat.

This comes up over and over and since 1986 there has never been a confirmed, clear, identifiable picture of one posted anywhere. To everyone that has seen one, you haven't, or at least you don't have proof.

Officially maybe. But they have been spotted often in south Texas for many years. They are never reported because of the fear that agricultural and oil production operations will be interrupted by overzealous protectors.

Don't believe it. Too many non-landowners taking data for that to be the case. Thousands of birders (often times general naturalists that would recognize the significance) with cameras... no photos. TPWD and private ranches like El Sauz working with hundreds of game cams? No photos. Zero road killed specimens collected and deposited at a wildlife collection like the ocelot in Hidalgo Co last year. Same story with black panthers. Same story with 8 foot rattlesnakes, etc. Show us the photos, otherwise, it's all nonsense.

A species account of the Jaguarundi (Puma yagouaroundi) | Mammals of Texas | Natural Science Research Laboratory | TTU

Quote:

Michael Tewes has spent three decades studying ocelots and bobcats in South Texas, and he has been vigilant in attempting to document jaguarundis. He has not found any specimens or verifiable sightings and is convinced the species is now gone from Texas.

Cool pelt. Get it tanned. Share mediocre pictures all over social media of your jaguarundi hide. Troll the GWs.

Would you take photos or report it if you were a large rancher with these cats on your property? Most large south Texas ranches don't have birders or other oddballs on their properties and they have thousands of acres without highways or other roadkill opportunities. To deny their existence is sticking your head into the sand.

I saw one 10-12 years ago on the Mariposa Ranch just outside of Falfurrias. I was surveying the ranch boundary and I went places that felt like no one had set foot in 250 years. It's a 25,000 acre ranch and REMOTE. Also saw some incredible endemic bromeliads in the crook of a tree. Topped it off with a sighting of some smugglers walking through the monte with backpacks and AKs. Luckily I saw them before they saw me.

Didn't get pics of the jag or the cartel. Believe it or don't. I don't really GAF. But the jags are down there.

Don't think you saw one, doesn't matter though. I think poster Chetos's uncle was the ranch manager for the Mariposa a while back. Maybe he can chime in.

You underestimate the capabilities of professional and amateur naturalists. It's weird that people want so badly to say they've seen one but somehow, 100% of the time for the last 30 years, have zero proof. Every thread started or article or facebook post has multiple people with sightings but never a photo. What a coincidence. As a biologist I would love for someone to confirm their existence in the state, but it seems they're gone.

And FYI there are no recorded specimens from north of the RGV counties.

Quote:

Occasionally, we receive reports of a Texas sighting, but no professional biologist has encountered one and no specimens are available since the 1970s. In addition, although many people have reported jaguarundis in central Texas (and other states), these felines have never been observed north of extreme South Texas. As with the jaguar and ocelot, predator control and habitat destruction took their toll on this species.

This right here is so so true, I have been involved with countless supposed sightings and even court cases filed in an attempt to hold up project developments due to the supposed presence of jaguarundi. Without exception they have all been absolutely and positively debunked!

This is fact. No rancher wants to report a sighting due to what it will trigger. I've seen photos of jaguarundi in Starr County from a rancher friend taken on his property. No way in hell he would every make an official sighting report. Now, how far north they range from the Starr, Cameron, Hidalgo County areas is certainly up for debate but to deny their existence in the RGV is extremely ignorant.
