I would say if your family was here for the formation of The Republic then you are an Original Texan. That's when the Texan spirit started. Anything before that is just Spanish/Mexican anyway. But a "true" Texan must only be born here, with exception of people whose family were here but they happened to be born elsewhere and then still grew up here. There are several in my family that were born in other states or countries during war times but came right back.

Extra points if you have some OG Czech, German, or Irish in there.
AKA the Command Center guy...

What in the hell are you talking about? My family was slaughtered by Tonks and Comanches both. They were hired into Texas because they were the first to make peace with Seminoles in Florida and promised insane anoints of land as payment. After they got tired of getting murdered, they got smart and started having the Indians take each other out. My family had nothing to do with Parker, or any of the Parkers that were savagely raped and abducted.

That was a tongue in cheek comment. As someone said above, they assumed you were a Parker or descendent of.

My dad's side of the family immigrated here from Alabama in the late 1840's. Established a ranch along the Clear Fork of the Brazos River. It is still a 40,000 acre working cattle ranch today.
So the greatest civilization is one where all citizens are equally armed and can only be persuaded, never forced. It removes force from the equation... and that's why carrying a gun is a civilized act.

I had to Google that to know what it is. I was doing some morning **** posting which was likely to be of no value to anyone. In a twist of fate, I have now learned something new about ancient Texas. Thank you.

You do realize that most of what the world considers as Texan, cowboys and Indians, oil wells, wide open spaces, cattle drives, canyon lands, etc is north of I-20 and a lot is north of I-40?

7th Generation here.
Ancestors fought in the Texas Revolution, rode with Terry's Texas Rangers in the Civil War, and one was a Texas Ranger.

All that said, I've met some pretty sorry excuses for Texans that have family here longer than mine.
It ain't just how long you've been here, it's a state of mind.

I trace my roots back to the Plantation Irish (Scots-Irish Presbyterians) in Ulster that came to America in the early 1700s. Not the same thing though.

My great-great-grandfather was born in Tennessee around 1822. He left behind his mother and three sisters when he struck out for Texas as a young man, chasing adventure and something bigger than the life he'd known. He met his lifelong friend, as a teenager in San Antonio. They joined the Texas Rangers. Together, they protected the territory from Indian raids and outlaws, building a reputation in a time when the law rode on horseback. Their first mission was a disasterhe was wounded in the hip by a Comanche chief, a scar he carried for the rest of his life. But he never let that slow him down. "If I'd wanted civilization," he used to say, "I'd have stayed in Tennessee and wrote poetry."
He lived hard and laughed loud. He drank too much, frequented brothels, and had a sharp tongue that made people either love him or curse him. He wasn't always easy, but he had a deep loyalty to the people he cared about, and a way of making you feel like you mattered.
After leaving the Rangers, he became a cattleman in South Texas. His best friend handled the day-to-day while he kept the company of friends, played cards, and offered unsolicited advice. They stayed there nearly a decade, watching the town grow around them. Life there had ran it's course so the left for greener pastures up north. It was near the end of the drive when his luck ran out. While scouting ahead, he was ambushed by Indians and wounded in the leg. Infection set in fast. His friend found him in Miles City, one leg already gone. The doctor wanted to take the other, but he refused. Said he'd rather die with a piece of himself intact than live without it. He died on his own terms, same as he lived.
Before he passed, he asked his friend to carry his body back to Texas and bury him by the Guadalupe River. That place had held his happiest memories, and in the end, it's where he wanted to rest.
