The Comanche weren't native Texans. They were originally one of the most inferior tribes and marginalized to poor territory and brutalized by other tribes. It was only after mastering the horse that they expanded and took great vengeance on their enemies.

Some of the posts on the Texas food thread got me thinking. Just what is a true Texan? If you're not of Caddo, Lipan Apache, Comanche, Kiowa, Kickapoo or Karankawa lineage do you qualify?

Those groups were Johnny Come Lately's, actually. My ancestors came to Texas way, way before them, so far back that stories tell of them riding in on mastodons. One story was when a group of people were boiling tar to put on the cracks of a canoe they build when one of them spotted a cloud of dust and a rider headed their way. This guy was on a mastodon, and had a rattlesnake in each hand, whipping the mastodon to run faster. He reigned up when he got to them and asked for something to drink. They said they had nothing and he asked what was in the pot. They said boiling tar. He reaches down, grabs it, and drinks every drop of it, wipes his mouth and thanked them. One said you are one tough son of a *****. He said not really, you ought to see the ******* who is chasing me. That ******* was my ancestor, a true Texan.

I wasn't born in Texas but I got here as fast as I could. And I've got four Texas kids. And I'll never leave.

You're a true Texan in my book. Certainly more than those listed in the OP.

I was born in Memphis, TN (came back to Texas 1 month later) to a mother that was born in Norfolk, VA, to a Grandfather that was born in San Antonio, to a Great Grandfather that was born in New Braunfels, to a Great, Great Grandfather that was born in Germany. My maternal lineage was part of the group that founded New Braunfels.

I am eligible to be in the "Son's of the Republic of Texas" although I have never joined. My wife is eligible to be in the "Daughter's of the Republic of Texas" although she has never joined. Her side of the family were here on land grants, and she had relatives who fought at San Jacinto.

I think that makes me a True Texan even though my birth certificate says TN!
Today, unfortunately, many Americans have good reason to fear that they will be victimized if they are unable to protect themselves. And today, no less than in 1791, the Second Amendment guarantees their right to do so. - Justice Samuel Alito 2022
