There's been some chatter lately about a bill to remove suppressors from the NFA altogether. Now there's news coming out that they're considering just lowering the stamp to $5 with all the same paperwork.

Email or call your congressman especially if they're on the ways and means committee.

Auto start/stop, plastic straws and suppressors. If we can't get it done now, it's probably not going to happen.

I thought I saw SilencerCentral has been outed for lobbying against removing them from NFA. Thought that was interesting…

Pssssttt: It's never going to happen. R's in Austin and DC are as useless as tits on a boar hog and have zero interest in actually doing anything positive or productive

I saw that somewhere too. Their entire business would likely dissappear if you can get suppressors at Academy, Bass Pro, or your local shop. They might still be able to sell online but right now the hurdles are to their advantage.

Yep. I don't blame them for not wanting it to be removed but the optics of being caught up supporting anti-2A stuff is pretty bad.

They did. To the tune of around $50K to support tax stamp conservation. Public filings are neat.

https://lda.senate.gov/filings/public/filing/db2030a2-e4e4-4e5d-aa01-4be4fbb284f5/print/

Make with that information how yall will.

ETA: Some controversy as to the actual meaning of the lobbying definition here. "develop and support suppressor tax stamp conservation legislation ". Some say it's for stamp fee to go to conservation funds which is viable I guess. But the wording is very, very stupid and ambiguous and the email just sent out is also very peculiar in its wording. Either way, again, make with that how you will.

This is what they were doing...

https://www.silencercentral.com/blog/press-release-silencer-central-supports-groundbreaking-bill-to-redirect-tax-stamp-revenue/

Quote:

Sioux Falls, South Dakota November 14, 2023 Silencer Central, America's largest silencer dealer, has rallied behind a groundbreaking bill introduced in Congress on November 9, 2023, which aims to redirect tax stamp revenue from the sale of suppressors to vital conservation efforts and expedite the processing of applications.
"The Tax Stamp Revenue Transfer for Wildlife and Recreation Act is a significant milestone for wildlife, hunters and shooting enthusiasts," said Brandon Maddox, CEO of Silencer Central. "By redirecting tax stamp revenue towards conservation efforts and expediting application processing, we are ensuring the sustainability of our natural resources and supporting the growth of shooting sports."
Maddox has been a strong advocate for this bill, recognizing its potential to revolutionize wildlife conservation and recreational activities. Silencer Central is proud to build upon its rich conservation heritage and help improve ballistics, accuracy and safety with its suppressors.
Under the proposed act, 15% of the total revenue generated from tax stamps would be directed towards expediting the processing of suppressor applications by the ATF's National Firearms Act (NFA) division to a maximum of 90 days. This allocation aims to address the lengthy waiting periods faced by applicants, which can currently extend up to a year despite recent efforts to streamline the process.
The remaining 85% of the tax revenue would be allocated to the Pittman Robertson Wildlife Restoration Trust Fund, supporting a wide range of initiatives. These include wildlife conservation, law enforcement, hunter recruitment and more. Additionally, 15% of the revenue would be dedicated to the development, maintenance and operation of recreational shooting ranges.
The Tax Stamp Revenue Transfer for Wildlife and Recreation Act paves the way for a brighter future for both wildlife conservation and recreational shooting.
With a legacy spanning over 18 years, Silencer Central emerged as a pioneer, offering customers a streamlined process for legally obtaining firearm sound suppressors. Today, this industry-leading company plays a vital role in the firearms industry, tirelessly advocating for silencer owners across the nation.

they want/need the bureaucracy (and registry), trying to distract with the cost component

Based on info out today from several of the bigger guntubers, it sounds like there is progress being made on both the HPA and SHORT Act and their inclusion (as originally drafted) in the Big Beautiful Bill (or whatever it's being called). As mentioned at the top, contact your reps! Call, email, hit their social media. Keep the pressure on.

HPA will not happen.
Suppressors will not become unregulated.

You'll get plenty of lip service and politicians will say they're working on it to keep people happy, but ultimately it will not happen.

Suppressor amendment (486) was submitted overnight. Still waiting to see if short barrels make it in.

Its' easy to put the amendment in, especially when it's cannon fodder for the negotiations. These types are the first to go, but at least a politician can say they "did something" and the other party or the RINOS are what killed it.

I am sick to death of "republicans" that are weak.

The ones in office need to know that Primary season starts after labor day.

Edit: I'm sick of weak republicans and also the ones that kick cans down the road either out of cowardice or because they want to use the issue to fund raise on.

Happy to pay an extra tax or fee that supports wildlife or whatever but there's no reason to have a registry for suppressors.

I'm less worried about the tax than the paperwork, delays, and possible criminal issues over a threaded soda can.

I never would have thought the HPA would have gotten this much traction. I certainly wouldn't expect congress critters to do anything to remove infringements, but it definitely won't happen if people sit on the sidelines and do nothing. I encourage you to call or keep calling your rep.

ETA - John Carter's DC office voicemail "is full". I left a message at the Belton office.

I'm waiting for the next "coincidental" shooting at this point. Happens every time there is any real meaningful momentum towards unshackling us from stupid laws concerning firearms. Happened last time the HPA had a good amount of support and momentum.

Wild to think that an 18 yo with a violent history (Uvlade shooter) can buy whatever guns and ammo he wants, but a law abiding citizen has to jump through time and financial hoops to buy a threaded piece of metal with baffles.

The system is broken.
