I imagine he is trying to fill a hole that will never be filled by helping prevent other parents from having to endure same. I was at the ECO the day he was released from hospital, he came and thanked us before going out on our search missions. I recall thinking he had lost 35 lbs in 3-4 days from grief. No husband, father, SIL should have to go thru what he did that night and all the days following.
I believe she ran the searches after the public first responders terminated their efforts. She was determined as was he. I may have initially volunteered through her once the private search started.
