Anyone hunt eagle lake this morning? Or garwood area? Hunting Tuesday am. Hoping big cold front caused them to move yesterday and today.

2nd hunt at our north TX duck lease this morning. Saw 20-25 lesser Canadas fly about 100 yards from me 5 minutes before legal shooting light. My buddy was late and I didn't have a goose call to try and work them back to our area.
My buddy showed up about 10 minutes after shooting light and as he's walking toward the blind we heard a lone Canada calling from a good ways off. He got his call out and started honking at the goose. I spot the goose about 3/4 mile away. My buddy worked him in a huge semi circle and he ended up flying right in front of our blind. Game over for him. That's the only bird we saw during the hunt.
On the way out I drove through the Hagerman Preserve which is really close to us. There was a pretty good group of snows on the DU food plot and lots of Pintails and some Spoonies in the sloughs. We need some more weather to push the birds around.

Very nice! I was surprised how many geese I saw south of El Campo Saturday morning. Probably 1-2,000 snows and just as many Specks landing in a field just north of the duck pond we were in.

Headed to Garwood for a corporate hunt in the AM. Any reports on bird numbers around there?
My neighbor that hunts on a club near there has not had very good hunts at all… not saying you'll do bad but it doesn't sound like the birds are in that area in high numbers. We have a lot of pintails and teal but most are stacked by the coast.
I'm sure it will be fun but I wouldn't expect them to be like

Yeah, this was a developer hosted thing at Bucksnag. Great time but they also cautioned the season hasn't been great. Just no weather to push the birds down. But it's been the same for me over around Winnie this year too.
Had a great time socially with the guys there. The hunt this morning actually exceeded my expectations. 5 guys in our group and a mixed bag with 2 pintail drakes, a pintail hen, a drake widgeon, a hen spoonie, and 5 GWT. Felt like early teal weather- I hunted in shorts.
All in all it was a good time. Especially since I didn't have to pay for it.
I'm a Bucksnag member and prior to last year never had a bad hunt in 6 or 7 years. Last year was bad for everyone in the area. This year shaping up that way till weather pushes birds down.
That's great! I haven't even seen a GWT yet, all BWT.

My boy is home from college in AZ for thanksgiving weekend. Not a lot of birds flying this morning but we got a couple Gadwalls. It was great to spend such a beautiful morning in the blind with him.

Good to hear about gadwalls and getting to hunt with your sonI haven't seen a whole lot of them yet. Maybe strapped 3-4 all season.
Im hearing the hen pintails are getting slammed. Used to, a flock would come in and everyone would pick out their one drake. Now, a flock comes in and the blind just let's loose on the whole flock.
Those were the only pintail hens I have shot as a group this year. As a club, we're pretty much not touching them. We had a guys dad that was in his 70s and let him shoot whatever he had in range that was legal.
Atleast yalls pintails will drop down from outer space for y'all.

Greenwings officially showed up for us this morning. First widgeon of the year too. My dog also did a first in retrieving 2 teal at once. Something I have seen other dogs do but never her. At 1 day shy of 7 years old and being a little tired from some long retrieves, working smarter not harder was deployed.

Nice! Glad somebody got some. We spent the weekend deer hunting not far from the lake. Commented this morning about how we only heard a couple volleys even though the weather was prime.

Be ready for frequent game warden checks.
Cool, most of those spots were boat in only. Only a few were accessible via walking. TAMU DU almost always got one that we could walk into and was good for a few birds everytime.
My son and a few of his buddies had a decent morning. Turned off warm this morning so not as many ducks as what's been on camera there lately.
Put the hurtin' on some cranes in Western Runnel's County yesterday morning. This last big cold front really pushed some birds in to the Concho Valley. Should be some good hunts over the next few weeks.
We smacked em near Brownwood this weekend. We had an 8 man limit Sat with about 12 pintails.
Sunday we had half limits as it seems our blinds were glowing when the birds wanted to flare in. Lots of birds on the move Sunday with that overnight front. One of the guides starts with the ducks in Ohio and follows them down all the way to Mexico each year. Was a very interesting fella to hunt with, as he had guided lots of high profile folks including a supreme court justice.
Sunday we had half limits as it seems our blinds were glowing when the birds wanted to flare in. Lots of birds on the move Sunday with that overnight front. One of the guides starts with the ducks in Ohio and follows them down all the way to Mexico each year. Was a very interesting fella to hunt with, as he had guided lots of high profile folks including a supreme court justice.

Not looking good from the north. Currently in Kansas. Everything was locked up yesterday. A few hundred birds camped out on the ice on the refuge. Otherwise, we've seen more hunters than mallards. Hit two lakes yesterday. Saw about 30 boats between the two.
Talked to others and everyone seeing the same thing everywhere they go. People driving around all over and no ducks. Big migration hit here two weeks back but were burned out in a week.
The amount of pressure up here right now reminds me of trying to find birds in Louisiana 15-20 years ago. Scout all you want, doesn't matter because everyone else is doing the same thing. People come from places like South Carolina and Florida, they're going to push hard.
Going to try to hunt the thaw out today and just be hopeful.

Terrible season in central Texas for us so far. My 12 year old son is obsessed with duck hunting and I hate seeing him get discouraged about it.

is that a Canvasback hen in your Sunday pic? Did you shoot it on a farm Pond?
Sure looks like 3 cans in that photo. Pretty sure at least 2 are hens.
I am terrible at ID'ing them, but my son knows them all. I will clarify with him when he gets in from TAMU today. We definitely had a wonderful variety. Duck ID is something I need to work on.
