Not sure if they are still there, but there used to be some massive bucks on the north end of NASA's Johnson Space Center in Clear Lake. We used to see them occasionally from Space Center Blvd.

Theya re still there, and in Armand Bayou preserve as well.

I did several projects for GCA at the corner of Bay Area and Port road, and they had a bunch of pet deer on their property that would be on anybody here's wall except japantiger maybe.

We have about 500 or so deer running around my neighborhood, but none of the bucks I have seen are nearly as impressive as the ones posted here. Not sure if it's a case of inbreeding in genetics or what, but they have food for days, no pressure and should have the opportunity to get big. But most just don't.

Do you see mature deer but with small rack or just no mature deer? Major roads or highway nearby? That can kill them off faster than a coonass with an empty freezer.

I lived in a neighborhood in SA that was noted for its whitetail herd. The deer manager for the township has been on this forum. Most folks think they have a lot to eat, but in reality they don't. In a lot of cases there is usually a shortage of forbes and browse in the typical neighborhood environment. This, and people in the neighborhood's notoriously feeding them corn thinking it helps them, when it actually does quite the opposite.
As CS78 says, those neighborhoods are typically surrounded by roads and highways and businesses (which is one of the reasons the deer are "trapped"in the neighborhoods) and have high mortality from such.
The other possibility there aren't large mature bucks is simply because there are folks killing them covertly…a common topic encouraged on TA. (I kid)

I live in far north SA and the Peak urban trail system the city has been creating has definitely helped the deer mobility. Dont see nearly as many carcasses on side of road as we once did. The landbridge at Hardberger park helps too. The trail improvements near the 1604/Blanco intersection have helped the hollywood park and hill country village deer herds get access to the less populated areas further north. But honestly there are so many people feeding them in that area they've created a bunch of corn addicts.

While on a bike ride saturday I saw one of the biggest bucks i've ever seen in the city on the trail but couldn't get phone up in time for a pic. Will try again.

Remember kids: No matter how untouchable you feel, you're not indestructible.

This guy learned that lesson the hard way when he ran out into the street from a green belt and tried to start a fight with my truck. Luckily for me he just bounced off the side. Unluckily for him, bouncing off the side was the last thing he did.

Now I'm getting two new doors for the low, low price of a $500 deductible.

We lose a few to the roads, that's a given. I've taken a couple out via the vehicle.

Mostly mature with smaller racks. There are a handful I've seen that are pretty solid, but overall either those guys don't come out as much or as somebody else pointed out, we have a few "hunters". Which I don't blame them one bit and have no issue with said activities. Too many damn deer in the neighborhood as it is.

I'd love to be able to dart and transport about 50-100 of the does and yearlings out of the neighborhood to my lease up the road and let them roam and breed with the local deer, but I've been told that TPWD frowns upon such actions, which is unfortunate.

Would have if I could have. For one, I don't want a game warden on my butt, but also for two I don't have the freezer space. I also didn't have the time. This was on my way home from work last week, and we had Halloween things going on every evening.

Yeah I hate driving in San Antonio this time of year. There are deer all along Prue and Babcock getting pushed out into road by the rut when normally they're laid up. Last year saw a wounded buck laying in traffic at Babcock and medical while on way to work. That's a great way to start the day. Another time saw a doe running down the Wurzbach sidewalk along the VA right outside the fence headed further into the med center. It is pitiful.

Schmellba…Our township where my mom and dad lived formed a "deer committee". We got TPWD involved and did actual deer population surveys and determined how many deer we could move. Some landowners in the neighborhood agreed to allowing TPWD and us to set up feed areas with drop nets. We found landowner ranchers that wanted the deer and got them approved from TPWD to move the deer to their ranches with permits.
It became an annual project for us to do that to keep the population in check.
You guys just need to organize and request through TPWD a biologist to come and assist. If you guys truly have an overpopulation they will help set up a program to move deer.
Be aware that not everyone in your neighborhood will be for it. We had lots of folks that hated seeing the deer caught and loaded on trailers. For this reason we would place the drop nets in out of the way areas to keep folks from being so aware and kinda away from so many onlookers.
If you guys would accomplish that you or your lease landowner could possibly qualify to get some of those deer.

There are. Some huge Axis too. But they are not untouchable except for the ones that hang out around the cantonment area. There are MWR deer stands all over along Salado and Lewis Valley creeks. The Axis mostly hung out around Salado Creek bottom near the hunting headquarters (off limits for shooting), but there were some really nice bucks that I used to see just north of the rappelling tower when I was doing work out there.

A few years ago I called the cops because there was a wounded buck and a dead doe both, in the middle of 281 North almost at 1604. It was so sad, and super dangerous because it looked like an odd tan piece of debris from afar, and traffic was swerving and stuff. That neighborhood there east of 281 is covered up with deer.

With the ease on supressors, deer like that will increasingly find their way onto walls. Lots of dudes that live in those neighborhoods are hunters and subsonic ammo paired with a suppressed rifle and accurate shot placement makes it too tempting.

Except who in their right mind would go through all the trouble to get a suppressor legally to then jump straight to a federal crime by using one to poach?
Gunny456

If subsonic ammunition is used there will be a great need for very accurate shot placement to do a quick kill. Standard ammo will still put the noise down range and sonic crack and will still be easily heard by neighbors.
Lots of these neighborhood deer are photographed and videoed so lots of folks miss them when they disappear or other video cameras catch the killing.
I.E. Go take a look at the huge whitetail that's on display at the city hall of Hill Country Village in SA. (If it's still there).
Woman in HCV shot him in her backyard and hauled it to a taxidermist in Marble Falls. Told him she shot him on a lease in the hill country… he didn't buy the story and contacted the GW. The rest is history. She was indicted and found guilty. Paid a large fine and large restitution and lost her firearm, right to ever have a hunting license in Texas again, and the deer.
Pretty good risk to take but there are always goobers who will. Poaching happens everywhere everyday.
