I have a chance to buy a lot of 5-6 large boxes of knives from the estate of a guy who passed away. If these were firearms, I'd be good, but I know nothing about knives.

- brands I should be looking for? (More valuable or easy to sell). I noticed a lot of case knives in the box that was open.
- I have no idea what to offer I know ballpark what's available. Additionally, I could sell them as a lot possibly. I make money either way. I make $$ probably buying them as a lot and then selling them individually.

TIA.
I know a lot about a little, and a little about a lot.

If you have any Schrade Old Timer (USA) pocket knives, I would be interested.

There are probably some of those in there. At least it looked that way in my brief glance.

Is this guy was about knives like he was about firearms, he'll have some nice stuff.

Well yeah, that's always the best option.

Kind of a pain to take/post photos of everything, but that's why the estate is selling them all to you!

Well, they haven't yet, but that is what they want to do. Sell them to someone as a lot.

I mean, worst case, low ball the hell out of it and do a knife grab bag like I did a few years back on here... I think the board would respond very well. I think I sold out within a couple hours.

I have to ask.

What in the hell makes a knife from this dude worth $500+ and a 7 year wait?

Does he use materials that nobody else on earth has access too or something? Each knife comes with a complimentary handy from a florida chick or something?

From what I can tell, he doesn't use any exotic steels - just common tool steel or a 300 series stainless. Not even supersteels. Sure, craftmanship is outstanding but you can find that level of craftmanship in a whole lot of places and pay less and don't have to wait the better part of a decade to get a skinning knife. I just don't get it.

Do it. My dad was a knife collector for years and I absorbed some of that. Happy to help you sift through it and price the better stuff.

It's legacy quality. Generational type custom knife. They're extremely well made and well designed. Hand ground convex blades are best for skinning and butchering. Can only be done by hand.

I'm not saying it's objectively worth the cost and wait but to some it is. Apparently to enough people.

Truth be told, get on eBay and find an Effingham Illinois made Blackjack and it's basically the same quality for half the cost. They're straight up copies.

Dude, that's like comparing a vintage high standard revolver to a vintage Colt revolver or 870 wingmaster to a vintage Mossberg pump. There Is a Difference. Several knife companies order huge quantities of Randall knives and sell them now for a premium over Todays order price for the same knife/ model. Like Russell. And even when you buy thru Russell, you might have to wait 6 months or so until they get that particular model in stock from their Randall order.

A lot of those, Hen & Rooster, Voss, German Bull, are trademarks from old Solingen Germany makers that have been acquired by Frost Cutlery over the years as they went bankrupt. Kissing Cranes would be another brand with a similar story.

Some of those are still made in Germany some in China but the value and quality all dropped once they sold to Frost. The pricing is going to depend on when they were made.

To add to the confusion some dealers, like AG Russell here in Arkansas, still have new in box pre-1980 Hen and Rooster knives for sale. That is why you can search online and see the same model for sale for $250 or $50 with some of those brands.

Blade stamp is the most reliable. There are some pocket knife collector forums that will have a listing of blade stamps.
