Lets say you find a firearm in your attic that ostensibly belonged to the previous owner.

Do you
1) Try and find the prev owner and ask if theyre missing something.
2) Keep it for yourself
3) Turn it in- its def been used in a murder

1) Assuming you exchanged contact info with previous owner so it wouldn't take much effort. Or the real estate agents could make the connection happen. It's the right thing to do and what I would hope someone would do for me.

If the previous owner says it is not theirs and must have been there from the prior owners, much more likely to just keep it at that point.

What reason do you have that it could be option 3? This sounds like a good story.

You been there 5 days or 25 years? Still think 1 is best as noted above but just curious.

Its a friend hes not a gun guy so he's deferred to me to come look at it and make safe and give advice on what to do. Hes been there for 10 years and has been in the attic alot the last week dealing with a rat issue and found this firearm in a gun sock up there in a corner. Doubt he knows who the previous owner is would prob have to look up or find via realtor.

No real reason to believe its #3 I just put that in there as a joke.

I'm curious what the the firearm is? If it's been 10 years and someone didn't come looking for it then I'm not putting a lot of effort in tracking them down. If it's and easy thing to do then a phone call would be worth it.

My guess is it's grandpa's old shotgun or deer rifle that got left up there and forgotten about.

My house in CO was originally built by the local game warden of many decades. He then sold it to the lady I bought it from. When I remodeled the attic, I found 3 pistols and a lever action 30-30. I spent a lot of time and money finding the closest heir of both previous owners and finally found a son of the game warden. He told me to keep the guns, as no one in the family would want them and he even drafted up a document stating as such.

As for the OP, I would try numero uno first.

If he's been there 10 years then the only answer is #2.

In that case you should offer your services to safely dispose of it! Chances are it's nothing nefatious and if nobody's asked nobody cares. I have a friend who flips a lot of old houses, estates and stuff, and has found lots of guns in attics. As far as I know he's never bothered tracking down a previous owner to give back a gun.

Wouldn't the guns technically belong to the new owner since you bought the house and anything in it?

I would put a little effort into finding the previous owner.

On my previous move, our movers left some stuff in the attic and I didn't realize it until about 6 months later. I reached out the landlord/owner (it was a rental) and it was all gone. ***** didn't even bother with letting me know.

I'm keeping it and saying nothing.

NO ONE forgets a firearm in their attic. So, it's either stolen, involved in a crime, or for some reason intentionally left there. Either way, I know nothing and it will never see another owner but me.

And if I sell my house and someone calls me and tells me they found a gun in the attic, then the answer is "yes, it's mine".

Either way nothing good comes from it. Just keep it and say nothing.

Man bought it and wanted to hide it from the wife. Man dies and nobody knew it was there. If the wife is still alive she has no clue it belonged to her husband. If the man had a son the son would have known about it and retrieved it after dad died.

Keep it and never look back.

This is where I'm at. That's a long time and they obviously aren't worried about it. If it was the first few years, then I would try to contact them.

The important question is: what is the gun?

#1 or turn it in to the local sherriff and explain. I get really unsettled with guns without papers.

And I own a two that I didn't procure. A .22 Winchester rifle that belonged to my grandfather probably from the early 1900s. A 38 special that was given to me by the sherriff at the time. The rest have papers. Heck the .38 may have paperwork from the Sherriff's office.

I actually found something of great value in an attic of a home I bought. Men's Rolex Submariner in a box of items that looked to me like it was a dead man's things. Like a widow or child of the man had put all of his important stuff or keepsakes together in one tote.

I reached out to the realtor who then reached out to the sellers agent and they had only owned the home for a year and had never been in that attic. I kept the tote for years. I had the watch appraised and spent $600 getting it cleaned and tuned up.

My conscience was killing me, I never wore the watch and I kept thinking this watch means more than 10k to "someone". It drove me crazy. Finally I called a police detective and asked him if there was any way to locate the owner or the owner's heirs. Mind you this was pre internet. The detective advised me to place a lost and found ad in the paper and if nobody responded the watch was legally mine. I did and nobody responded so I kept the watch and felt somewhat better about it. In 2000 someone broke into my home, stole a glass jar I had in my closet full of change (maybe $400 tops) and that Rolex. They walked past Gibson guitars worth thousands, guns, other jewelry and only took the change and the watch.

That watch had bad JuJu

BrazosDog02: Howdy, gotta go with your comment, NO ONE puts any firearm in the attic, except to hide and hope it is forgotten, NO ONE! So it is really a Finders, Keepers kinda deal!

My dad never owned a gun safe and would hide his guns in his attic when he would go on a vacation. I knew what guns he owned and when he passed he willed them all to me. All were there except one. A Remington Model 1903A3. He had never said he had sold it. Asked my mom and she knew nothing about it.
I even went up in the attic and looked for it. Fast forward 5 years and my mom wanted me to put some decking down in the attic so she could walk around up there and store some stuff. Now… dad had a few boards laying up there that were not nailed down. When I went to move them guess what was under one in the corner?
Yep. That Model1903A3. In a nice case to boot. In perfect shape too.
And I still have it.

I would say the right thing to do is make an effort to find the owner. I would have wanted someone to have done that for me if they would have found my dad's rifle.
I think those kind of good deeds and integrity come back to you at sometime in your life.
If not I would see if it's stolen. If it's not stolen and can't find the rightful owner after doing due diligence to do so….i would add it to my collection with a clear conscience.

Lots of old timers used to always hide guns in their attics.
Not only did my dad do it but so did my grandad and uncle whenever they would go on vacation or whatever.

No, but they could die or go senile and forget it. Or have a pissed off sig. other hide it.
I'd go with option #1.

Unless it's like a Purdy or something of course.

Here's an /06 barrel. A quick inet search shows that rebarrel of 742s aren't as simple as one would think.
