#1 or turn it in to the local sherriff and explain. I get really unsettled with guns without papers.

And I own a two that I didn't procure. A .22 Winchester rifle that belonged to my grandfather probably from the early 1900s. A 38 special that was given to me by the sherriff at the time. The rest have papers. Heck the .38 may have paperwork from the Sherriff's office.

Guns in Texas dont have papers.

Similar happened to my dad. Bought a new house when I was in high school and found an old mosin with a broken stock. Even had a hammer and sickle stamped on the top. Contacted the old owners about it but they didn't want it back.

That was decades ago and it's still never been fired. Stock has never been fixed.

I saw he makes "reasonable effort" and if no luck, it's his to get fixed.

Every 742 I've ever seen was a 30-06, though they were chambered in other cartridges. I don't think I'd ever forget banana peeling the barrel on a 30-06.

The 742 is the rifle that killed the 280/7mm express mag.

They rifle conveys and is rightfully yours.

Replacement barrels can be found. It will be an easier job if the replacement barrel comes with the barrel extension attached (which is typical) and a matching bolt. Without the matching bolt, headspace may need adjusted. I believe you will need a barrel nut wrench.

I would almost agree with you on this, but my grandma died earlier this year, she was 101. She died in the house she has lived in since the 1950s.

My dad's brother died as a young adult in 1980, after she died I was helping my dad clean out the house and garage. I asked "what's in the attic" he said nothing. I don't accept that and pull down the stairs to check.

Holy sheet. While there wasn't a gun that I found, I did find my grandpa's navy chest from WWII, his discharge papers, crap loads of other documents, an original Ouija Board game in the original box, electric football table top game, TONS of stuff my dad never knew about. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that something got put up there to be out of the way and then forgotten about.

Probbaly more costly to rebarrel it than the gun is worth ?

I would think if it's something you are interested in that it would be worth buying a barrel. Even without a matching bolt, it may headspace just fine.

Cut, crown, drill and tap will not cost much if you can't find a reasonably priced barrel.

I'll concede that point. I can definitely see that happening. I guess I didn't really think about that. Folks these days don't live in houses for more than a decade at the most a lot of the time. My grandmother used to keep jewelry frozen in her ice box and hidden under her couch. Lol. Old people do forget.

Been in hundreds of attics over the past 30 years. One was full of stuff and this stuff was in the way where work needed to be done. Proceeded to move stuff and discovered 10 plus military rifles hidden under stuff. Also came face to face with an old double barrel in the same attic. Apparently that was how child proofing/ theft prevention was done by old timers back in the day. No tellling how many other firearms were in that attic that were still concealed under stuff but after that job I became a lot more aware of what could be in attics when moving stuff to do remodeling.

Why do you say that? The 742 was chambered in .280! Anyway I still hunt with a .280, great round.
The popularity & ammo availability of the .270 & 7mm Rem Mag were probably bigger impacts.

Yeah back in the day the 280 was downloaded to pressures the 742 action could handle, making it uncompetitive against the 270 and others. (I shoot one too!)

The 742 is a turd. It was like trying to make the 1100 concept hold up to centerfire pressures, that makes for a ridiculously PITA disassembly/re-assembly process for more than a casual cleaning.

That said, I need an extractor for one.

I'd find a good smith and give that rifle to him for a parts donor. If you can find one that wants it.

When the .280/7mm Remington Express came out I had to have one and bought two new BDL's. One for myself and one for my dad for Christmas as he, up to that time, had never owned a totally new hunting rifle.
I handloaded for both of them and really liked their performance in comparison to my .270 with heavier bullets. (>150gr.)
Still have both and have killed lots of game with them.
Liked the cartridge so much I had a custom rifle built in .280 Ackley and it's been great too.
Here is a link, for anyone interested, on a good heads up comparison of .270 vs. .280. I thought it was a good read. Never owned a 742. Uncle had one and I never had the wants for one in any cartridge type or caliber.

This happened to us after buying our second house. There was an air return grill at floor level in our hallway. On move in day my father in law said he wanted to show me something. He had taken off the grill so I thought he was going to show me the air filter. The previous homeowner had stashed two guns in there for safe keeping. There was a plain bolt action 22 and an antique fully engraved Ithaca double barrel shotgun. The engraving reached all the way to the end of the barrels. Pretty cool firearm but the right thing to do was to contact the previous owner. He was a little embarrassed and told me it was his grandfather's. He had forgotten he put them in there. He came by the next day and grabbed them; very thankful I reached out.

I have an old Remington 742 in 243 Win. Has an old Scope Chief scope with see thru scope rings so the shooter can also use the open sights (what the black gun guys call co-witnessing...I think?). It's a fun rifle to hunt with- a coyote getter.

I think that is the only "rifle" I own, I need to check the model, but its for sure a Remington auto in .30-06. I don't count my 10/22 or my AR.

It was my uncles who lived in Quihi and when he died, my aunt gave a bunch of his guns to my dad (her brother) and my dad owned a pre-64 Model 70 so I got the Remington as a hand me down.

I'm a bird hunter and haven't shoot a deer in 20 years, but I think its the only rifle I've killed deer with. Its back when people "engraved" their names on all their guns. I do have his old 870 Wingmaster with his name on it too.

Hard to say. A good gunsmith should be able to give you an estimate.

I'd ask about removing the old barrel and the sight apetures from the same ... might be able to get enough for what's left for it to be worth the effort.

Finally, a few of my local GS (DFW) sell used on consignment and/or through gunbroker. If you have some that do all of that locally, I would go to them for options.

BTW, just curious what caliber that blown barrel is? Wondering if someone could have loaded the wrong cartridge with a slightly larger diameter projectile than fits through the barrel...
