#1 or turn it in to the local sherriff and explain. I get really unsettled with guns without papers.
And I own a two that I didn't procure. A .22 Winchester rifle that belonged to my grandfather probably from the early 1900s. A 38 special that was given to me by the sherriff at the time. The rest have papers. Heck the .38 may have paperwork from the Sherriff's office.

I would almost agree with you on this, but my grandma died earlier this year, she was 101. She died in the house she has lived in since the 1950s.
My dad's brother died as a young adult in 1980, after she died I was helping my dad clean out the house and garage. I asked "what's in the attic" he said nothing. I don't accept that and pull down the stairs to check.
Holy sheet. While there wasn't a gun that I found, I did find my grandpa's navy chest from WWII, his discharge papers, crap loads of other documents, an original Ouija Board game in the original box, electric football table top game, TONS of stuff my dad never knew about. It's not out of the realm of possibilities that something got put up there to be out of the way and then forgotten about.
