I'm usually not a chain guy, but dang Gringo's has some great food and it's consistent. There's several other places I like too, but too inconsistent.

I'm not a huge tex-mex guy generally because I prefer more true mexican food, but I do have to give it to Gringos on some of their family fajita packs, those are a solid value.

But yeah, this is going to depend on what you're looking for.

Breakfast tacos: Jesse's, La Familia, Yole's, some folks swear by Garpez
Sit down mexican: Don Chente (pretty hyped they're moving into the old Bahama Bucks on 40), I like Papa Perez more than most do
Taco truck: Haven't hit any of these in a while so other people might have more up to date recommendations
Tex Mex: Gringos, Lupe Tortilla

Tacos La Perlita on Harvey Road. Very good and big portions - one barbacoa burrito easily feeds two people.

I do not understand how Maria Mia does not get more love.

Their quesadillas are one of the most flavor packed artery cloggers you'll find.

Margaritas are top notch.

That green sauce they serve is amazing.

Crawfish enchiladas are the best cross-over dish I've had at a Mexican food joint.

Steak enchiladas are some of the only ones you can actually eat (as opposed to ground beef) because the meat is so tender.

Why do they not get more love?

We've been once. I thought the food was good but not good enough to make up for the crazy loudness.

We went once and the prices were much higher than say Gringos. Like the fact that they have the a la Barry sauce (even though they can't call it that) for the fajitas, but too much for our family of four and as stated before, it is too loud.

Did go eat once for free with the boss, and my co-worker agreed about the crawfish enchiladas. He said they were the best thing on the menu.

Maria Mia's is solid. Gringo's is fine.

Frida's is awesome.

Most of their dishes serve enough food for two people.

Not a huge fan of Frida's. We thought it was very loud. Lupe Tortilla has the best fajitas. Maria Mia and Gringo's are good. We also like La Carretta and Corona's. LOS Cucos in Bryan has some good dishes.

La Perla is good. Yole's is great.

Taqueria Arandas. Wow. This place is not good. First time I ordered something and took two bites and left.

Yes and mostly. They've added a few things and tweaked others. It's much better than the last few years of mi Pueblito

Gringos is a great location and service is top, but to me, food is average Mexican food and overpriced.

Lot's of Mexican family owned restaurants in the county that are very good and more authentic Mexican Cuisine.

For everyday with good pricing - MasFajitas. I love their house margs.

Recently started going to Maria Mia's for Two for Tuesdays and it's pretty solid. Strong margs (just Ike Ninfas back in the day).

I like Gringos but it is pricier.

I used to tell people I grew up in north Mexico, but really McAllen might as well been Reynosa. I have little love for Gringos especially at the price. End up there fairly often since its in one of my customers rotation. It seems their catering is better than in house, which I have had on occasions that was Caso Ole quality. Its food quality in not a Papasitos substitute and the service is typically sub par. People that claim its just as good are plain wrong. I end up at Maria Mia's since lots of customers and family are Crawfish enchilada addicted. Personally more value oriented when it comes to mexican, would far rather eat to polly's, yoles, Corona, San Jose, and other small places. Think food at Cilantro is good but parking is typically a disaster and had several very bad service experiences so I go elsewhere.
Lots of good mom & pop options.

I'll eat at just about any Mexican food place.
Gringos, Chuys, Lupe's, Fridas for atmosphere and drinks though.
Lot's of mom and pop places though.

Fuego and Cameron Ranch are two more good breakfast tacos.

I am fairly certain that the same family that owns La Perlita also owns Cilantro.

La Perlita, Jesse's, and Frida's are my favorites for Mexican food.

Maria Mia is the best TexMex.
There are many good real Mexican places that are all small local shops.

Frida's is the only "interior" Mexican restaurant.

Lots of Mex-Tex-Mex of which Jesse's and Don Chente are excellent representations.

I've always enjoyed Coco Loco for good Mexican food.

Not much of an atmosphere and no alcohol but the food is always very good and reasonably priced.
You can usually get in &out of there in 30 minutes if you don't have a lot of time to eat.

Maria Mia is the place for us to go much of the time. I love the renovated decore and both the chicken and crawfish enchiladas. Mario did a great job with the renovation.

It's locally owned for those looking for that.

Del Rancho Pal Rancho is a trailer in the Wings n More car wash parking lot. Absolutely fantastic. There's also a newer Guatemalan truck parked at the Shell across from Wings. Haven't tried it yet, but the wife says it's pretty dang good
