Thanks for the replies. We went to Frida's and the carne asada tacos were great. Chips were ok with a variety of red/ green sauce and bean dip. I counted 15 tables not including the bar seating and 9/15 were full at lunch. Nice, smaller restaurant.
Had previously been to Caminos and gringos but wanted to try others. Will save the other suggestions and try the next trip but will also return to Frida's.

I'm not a huge tex-mex guy generally because I prefer more true mexican food, but I do have to give it to Gringos on some of their family fajita packs, those are a solid value.

But yeah, this is going to depend on what you're looking for.

Breakfast tacos: Jesse's, La Familia, Yole's, some folks swear by Garpez
Sit down mexican: Don Chente (pretty hyped they're moving into the old Bahama Bucks on 40), I like Papa Perez more than most do
Taco truck: Haven't hit any of these in a while so other people might have more up to date recommendations
Tex Mex: Gringos, Lupe Tortilla
There is "true" Mexican food (mainly fish dishes, see huachinango a la Veracruzana) and there is peon food (a Veracruz Mexican friend's words, not mine). I like the peon food myself, takes me back to my roots.

Polly's on Wellborn is always good. Great breakfast dishes as well.

Lol, I think it gets lost sometimes too that Mexico is a really big place. What's "mexican food" on the border is different from what it is down south just like what you'd get at a typical "American" restaurant is different in College Station than it is in Chicago.

Particularly I think mexican seafood gets overlooked a lot like you mentioned. My dad had a spicy shrimp dish at Don Chente, can't remember which one now, but said it was one of the best things he's eaten in a long time.

Del Rancho Pal Rancho is a trailer in the Wings n More car wash parking lot. Absolutely fantastic. There's also a newer Guatemalan truck parked at the Shell across from Wings. Haven't tried it yet, but the wife says it's pretty dang good
Thanks for that info re: Del Rancho.

I've seen it there for awhile now and they always seem to have some foot traffic whenever I pass by.

Do they serve breakfast tacos?

They finally started to. I've ordered some bulk from them for open houses. Pretty good. Salsas kick em up well. Garpez up Longmire, behind Walmart, also does breakfast. And cheap lunches. No dinner service

I also get tamales from the trailer every year for Christmas since my tamale hookup went...somewhere?
