Coming up 6 this afternoon, headed to Brazos County, there is a dead animal off the left shoulder near a turnaround in the median.

This is 2 miles south of Business 6 to Navasota.

I only saw the rear of the body and a long tail, and didn't see the head.

It looked short-haired, so not a longer haired dog. Maybe a lab. Maybe. And I know we get told there are no mountain lions east of I-35, but maybe?

I was not in position to turn around and get another look.

Any of you Grimes County Ags interested in proving whether we had a mountain lion east of 35?

If a dead mountain lion was found in these parts it would be all over the news by now, even is an escaped zoo/sanctuary animal.

I don't believe they are here, but people who know these things well are certain one could easily thrive sticking close to the Brazos River. Prey in the form of deer, feral hogs, and pets alas are wildly abundant here. And they are expanding so one will certainly turn up here.

Just as gators are getting closer and closer to having a permanent foothold here.

Alligators have a permanent foothold here and have for over a decade. Otters are common when they weren't a decade ago. Mountain Lions probably cross the river bottom corridors fairly regularly but not commonly. When they do most will be adolescent males looking for a range and females. I'd be way more interested and surprised to find a black bear here….. now that would be some range expansion. They are showing up on deer cams in the Jasper and Nac areas at times. I think if we get them it will be. Eastern Black Bears not the hill country ones…but who knows.

I'm about 95% sure there was a dead cougar cub on the north shoulder of Highway 30 between Fitch and the business parks a few weeks ago. Definitely wasn't a bobcat because of the long tail and had the face of a cougar. It was distinctive enough when I passed that I had to go get a second look and it was pretty obvious.

I see no reason why there couldn't be a cougar in these parts. The question I have in 2024 is why hasn't anyone captured a pic of one? Just a quick IPhone snap and we can settle this discussion. I actually want to see one.

Alligators have had a permanent foothold here for 3 decades plus.

We pulled a 12' gator off our place in Robertson county in the early 90s. A 10' in the 00s. Navasota river side.

There have been several cougar and mountain lion sightings around the Brazos valley over the years… and there have been some pictures.

Most often around Grimes county , especially north grimes county , south Robertson/ North Brazos county , along OSR on both sides of 6.
I know there was one in Washington county within the last 2 years.

Big cats are out there in our area.. not many but they are out there

So where's the pics? Or any TX P&W verification? Game cameras heavily in use, and IF there was anything close to a verified sighting, coverage would be amped up significantly.
Hog hunters, deer hunters...but never a verified sighting, or shooting.

On the old "Lone Star Law" show, one warden said yellow Labs were the #1 source of "yeh, I saw me a mountain lion".

I saw what the OP mentioned, and while it was decomposing, while passing, I thought, "that looks like a cougar."

There was one around our place in Leon County around Flynn. Seen by our neighbors. Game Warden confirmed the Deer carcus found along our fence line was mutilated by a big cat. And our cows were spooked something awful for a while. They are out there.
We'll win this war, but we'll win it only by fighting and by showing the Germans that we've got more guts than they have, or ever will have. We're not going to just shoot the sons-of-b******, were going to rip out their living G*******d guts and use them to grease the treads of our tanks. We're going to murder those lousy Hun c********** by the bushel-f****** basket. War is a bloody killing business. You've got to spill their blood or they will spill yours. Rip them up the belly. Shot them in the guts.

Back in the 70's there were whispers of a something big out in the Wellborn area. Apparently someone put together a posse to try and run it down, but nothing was ever found, as it either moved on or had gone to ground.

so whats the difference between a bob cat, a mountain lion and a cougar? I googled mountain lion and it says cougars and mountain lions are the same thing...

I hit a bob cat with my truck on wellborn road before... between wellborn and Millican.... he was quite dead..

and I've seen them at my place in Millican several times.. saw one sitting on the porch once...

I'd be careful taking the word of others on seeing a mountain lion. People have overactive imaginations and will frequently "see what they want to see". The outdoor board posters will use the yellow lab joke because those are frequently mistaken at distance for lions. If you see an actual picture of one it's frequently "a friend of a friend sent me this picture" and when you research it, it's likely from some totally different area and someone is just spreading rumors for fun to stir people up. And as much as I respect most game wardens, they aren't impervious to mis-identifying a cat either.

There was a story on the outdoors board about someone with a horse that had some gashes on its hindquarter and the game warden came out saying it was a lion attack. Later on they found the tin roof off a barn on the property had peeled back and had four jagged edges that the horse bumped up against in the middle of the night and spooked itself, as they found horse hair and skin on them.

As GSS stated above, with all the game cameras out there now, plus every single person walking around with a cellphone (and thus a camera) in their pocket, why aren't there more pictures of them in this area? That should tell you something. Big cats need a pretty decent range and central Texas (triangle of Dallas, Houston, and San Antonio) is just too populated for them now. Not saying there hasn't ever been cats here, but it's just very unlikely in todays environment.

I saw a very big cat with a long tail on Old Reliance Rd about a month ago.

Not saying it was a Mountain Lion but it was the biggest cat I have ever seen. About 2.5' tall and maybe 3-4' long. Brown in color. Small head, Tail was slick, not bushy.

I wish I had a dash camera because it was clearly visible 40yds ahead of my truck.

I'll prob get made fun of for this but about 10 years ago in wood lake I saw what I could've sworn was a Jaguarundi dart across greens prairie.

Was hunting near Somerville years ago and spooked a pack of javelinas. Had no idea those things were in this area. Have also seen caracaras, which I used to see only in the RGV up here in BCS (one took out a squirrel in my yard).

A jaguarundi would not shock me, if other critters normally found south of us were working their way up. I'd happily trade all the raccoons around here for coatimundis in a heartbeat.

While I believe it's possible for a mountain lion to show up around here, I'm with the crowd saying it should be pretty easy to prove with how much technology there is, how many game cams, etc. If you do see one, get TPWD to verify. Dead on the side of the road? Stop and get a pic. Call the game warden. We'd all like to know!

Officially, none confirmed in Brazos or Grimes county.

I have friends who say they've seen mountain lions near their property close to the Brazos river S of CS. Swear it.

But then at a party a few months ago, she comes in yelling for her husband, "mountain lion sighting, back yard!!!". Everyone runs out to see a fluffy house cat taking a dump along the tree line behind their house.

People don't know what they see!

I've seen Caracaras up near Tyler within the past few years. They've been moving north

I thought I saw one off of Royder a few years ago. I just assumed I was wrong, but it sure looked like one.

Well, that's the same area. It was surreal to see. I've seen bobcats, I know what mountain lions look like. This was neither and wasn't domestic. This was a long, slender cat with a small head, long tail and about 1.5 times the size of a house cat. It ran across greens prairie from woods to woods like a gazelle.

I was thinking someone else with the amount of traffic up and down Hwy 6. I drove through there last night around 10pm, so it was dark, and I wasn't exactly sure where to look. I'm sure by now it's carcass has been gone through and/or pulled off the into the woods.

I saw the exact same animal but it was dark and around 6 am. I thought it was a cougar as well. I went back yesterday and stopped to take a look and it's a deer. The back legs are squished together so it looks like a thick tail. Deceiving at 80 mph and dark, but it's a deer.

Friend of mine who lives near N. Zulch just sent a grainy pic of what he says is a mountain lion in the area. His neighbor has lost livestock to it. I wish I could post the pic but alas cannot. The shape, color, and more importantly the very long tail are correct. Sadly I can't see anything for scale in the pic. It is absolutely a feline. I'm trying to get more info and will pass it along. But consider this a tentative PSA if you live in that area.

3 videos of mountain lions in Plano and Lewisville in past month. Also in San Marcos. Certainly could be one around …

Gators aren't anything new. I jumped one 40 years ago walking along a creek while hunting in Houston County, just an hour east of here.
