The winds of change always have a bad odor (odour) in CS.

Did anyone actually put in bids for it?

What did the city pay?

It is no longer on LoopNet

We must have a report from the City ASAP because it was a bid process
Did they accept a bid?
was there a reserve?

This MUST be transparent

I would be shocked if the City received a single bid on the property or response to the RFP. Millions of dollars spent on a property that literally no one wants.

You must know some of the details also.

No way with due diligence would a corporation buy with their own money

But the city unfortunately our money is monopoly money

I wish the state would pass a law prohibiting cities, counties, and school districts from purchasing real estate without a need and a plan for future use of the real estate.

To me, even if it can be shown a profit can be made from the purchase via a sale or lease, it is not the role of government to compete with the private sector in real estate dealings.

Laws already go too far. I wish people would quit voting for big government... including school bonds. God forbid we get lower taxes.

Our biggest problem is we think we're voting for smaller govt conservatives but they get in, get the run down of "this is how the city works" and they go along to get along.

Macy's is just another in a long list of boondoggles and misappropriations.

As a pragmatic Libertarian I totally agree with you, but it is the role of laws to protect me and you from government that is out of control in spending my money. How are you going to get lower taxes when the city loses their ssa on investments? It is not the role of the city to do speculative investments which competes with the private sector. Laws are good when they protect me and my property and my freedoms from government and from you.

The city, county and state exist to supply essential services that we really cannot supply ourselves, not to waste money competing where the private sector can best serve. I noticed that none of the large commercial real estate companies, wany who are much more knowlegeable than city clerks, have shown much interest in the property.

Unfortuately, government at all levels will never quench their thirst for OPM.

Congratulation, you are a willing part owner of a vacant building that the owner overpaid for, has no use for, and can't sell.

It's not the Lege's job to write statutes that keep local governments from doing stupid things. That's the job of the people who elect their local governments.

And like it or not, the people who bother to vote in CS seem to be content with their local government. At least it seems they are content as they keep electing people who make these decisions again and again and the city staff keeps giving these options to approve.

What the poster proposed is the opposite of big government, it would actually limit government.

Another example of mismanagement. And these folks are getting ready to tear down northgate too.

Build your high rise at the Macy's if you want it so badly. Of course no one has responded to a question I asked about President Welsh wanting to cut undergraduate enrollment. He stated as much on a wtaw radio news hit. They want to build a high rise on the back porch of the Chicken instead.

Total incompetence on display.

Move the U-Haul on Texas/University and put a high rise right there.
They could probably bite their tongues and tear down city hall, sell it, use Macy's, and still come out even.

Preventing a storage center from opening there was a motivating factor for the city to buy the Macy's property, based on comments here at the time.
Trump will fix it.

What happened to the E-sports deal? That seemed like a great idea to revitalize it. The university needs to use it. Hell, Elon could build a tunnel to it.

All the hand wringing by the Blue Hair Action Network was the driving force behind that purchase. The council has to do the bidding of their overlords.

True, but when we elect a person we have no idea that they were going to buy properties unwisely for millions of dollars and way over any appraised value. I expect my representatives to be good stewards of my money. . The only control you have is to not relect them in a few years. Maybe we need a law that states that any real estate purchase by the city or county over a certain dollar value needs to be voted on by the citizens?

I bet many if not most of us voted for one or two city council persons who voted to buy the Macy's building. I did.

I think the current council person, Melissa McIlhaney, spoke as a citizen against the purchase when it happened. Seem to remember hearing that when she campaigned.

True, but when we elect a person we have no idea that they were moronic to a degree to buy a vacant property unwisely for millions of dollars and way over any appraised value with zero thoughts of what they will do with it. Insane. I expect my representatives to be good stewards of my money... . The only control you have is to not relect them in a few years. Again from what I have been told from a big time realtor

So, they spent $7.3 M (plus monthly common area maintenance fees) for a piece of property that is not useable?

That seems par for the course.

It is useable by a person needing the space. The problem is is all the support posts are obstructions for many uses and also all the flooring was removed after the first floor flood from the freeze damage that occured just before the city bought it. I have been in it two times since the flood.

Not a lot of demand for 103,000 square feet of CHVAC area that would need a multiple hundred thousands of reno $$$ to use.

I am not a realtor so I am just repeating what was told to me in a conversation about Maxys

And not inly 7.3. I would assume the city has Hoa (or whatever they are called ) dies per month just like the rest of the business owners in the mall
