All I can add is that the Shipley's in town have really gone down the toilet lately.
Kai's donuts are amazing.

What makes a donut better than others? Curious what the metrics are here.
I haven't had them in a while, but I remember going and picking up 20+ dozen for the dorm during finals week at 0600. Fresh and hot!
Hadn't eaten one in a while but the unglazed old-fashioned donut at Stella's on West Villa Maria goes superbly well dipped in coffee.

Last 3 times I've gone to Shipley's (South CS and Bryan location by Target), the donuts were cold and I had to keep repeating what I wanted because they couldn't hear me over the obnoxiously loud Tejano music blaring behind the counter. The last time I went, I asked if they could heat up the donuts and they rolled their eyes at me like I was asking them to make me a fresh batch. Sorry to inconvenience you? Next time I just won't come so you have an easier morning. And then we wonder why a place shuts down because of lack of business.
Karma has some called cronuts (cross between croissant and a donut)……really good!!

I still vote Shipley's for straight glazed donuts, esp if they are warm. But the sausage/jalepeno kolache wrap is nothing but a little smokie with some jack cheese inside of a bun that is 2x larger than the meat.

Shipley donuts are great but the klobasnek selection is straight up garbage and always has been. It's not even a hill I will die on. I will stand triumphantly on top surrounded by all the vanquished naysayers when they finally realize the truth.
And if you don't have a great product line from top to bottom as a donut shop, you cannot be counted as "great" overall IMO.

Yeah Karma (and I think there's multiple of them going up) is really good and does have donuts.
They've got some wild flavors that I had never considered for a breakfast but damn if they didn't sound good once I saw them.

Any place that has a sign outside that just says "Donuts" is better than shipleys. Shipleys glazed donuts are fine but their specialty and donut holes are bad. Specialty are smaller and more expensive and often the donut holes look like they were trampled before being put in the bag. Also, paying $3.30 for a hotdog with cheese on it is outrageous.

Ask for the Big Earl. Has Earl Campbell sausage and pepper jack cheese.

You're correct, the flavors SOUND good. But the execution sort of sucks.
Trackside is far and way better than Karma, butter chicken kolaches notwithstanding.
I thought the birria and the jalapeño popper were really good. Cheesesteak was pretty good too but not quite as good as those two. The sausage and gravy is a good idea but with the bread it's tastes a little too sweet for me.
