Gutierrez issued a friendly challenge to Austin Mayor for the Aggie Game this Friday that was created and posted by the city of Bryan. In the video he states that he is a member of the Fighting Texas Aggie Class of 1986. However according to his own LinkedIn and Find An Aggie on Aggienetwork.com he did not in fact graduate from Texas A&M. Embarrassing that the mayor and City of Bryan would misrepresent themselves in this way in such a public manner.

Does he say he's a graduate? He's still a member of the class even if he didn't finish.

Kind of wild that this even needs explaining on an Aggieland message board, but here we are.

If the OP were actually familiar with Aggie tradition beyond Googling someone's LinkedIn, they'd already know that "once an Aggie, always an Aggie" isn't just a cute phrase. It's been part of A&M culture for generations. The Association of Former Students was literally founded in the 1870s on the idea that your connection to the university doesn't vanish the moment you stop taking classes. Finishing a degree has never been the qualifier for being part of a class year or the Aggie family.

Plenty of Aggies through history left early for military service, family needs, or work. They're still Aggies. They're still listed with their class. They're still recognized at Muster. The Association has said this for decades.

So if the mayor says he's Class of '86, that's exactly how Aggies have identified themselves for over a century.

If the OP wants to nitpick credentials instead of celebrating someone repping the town and the school… well, that's their choice. But it's not exactly the most Aggie one.

I didn't realize that muster recognizes anyone that attended the university. I always thought is was just those that graduated.

That would have removed a great many from the classes around the world wars who left for service and never returned to finish their degrees.

I started teaching/research at Texas A&M in 1986. Am I part of the class of '86 or '90? I wonder ; )

Interesting question. For undergrads, the rule of thumb is, you are the "Class of XX" where XX is the year you would graduate if you completed your degree in four years. I started school in the fall of '84 and therefore choose to be class of '88. However, when you are ordering your ring, if you did not actually complete your classes until a later year, you could choose that year instead. So if I had graduated in the Spring of '90 for example, I could have elected to put that on my ring. I believe the vast majority of students choose the first option.

I assume you were working towards a Masters or PHD, which also qualifies you for an Aggie Ring assume you complete the requisite number of hours. I would say you could follow the above formula, substituting the year you should have graduated from your program, however long that would have taken.

Pick whichever class you feel more a part of.

When I came to A&M for grad school, I couldn't order my ring until I had officially completed the degree.

Makes sense. I believe undergrads have to have completed their 90th hour before ordering their rings. I assume they asked you what year you wanted to put on it?

I don't remember it being a choice at the time. It was the year that the degree was granted. When people ask what year I was, I always say I was there for grad school from '94 to '02.

He wants attention. He doesn't want it when people find out he's got $1 cattle grazing leases and tries to sue an aircraft owner for somehow scaring his cattle into sterility or something.

Can you imagine those of us who would be left out?

You and I both donate to the 12th Man Foundation. I know I donate to the Association of Former Students. I go to every sporting event that I can when I'm in town. I attend events on campus all of the time. YET, my Aggie coworker with his ring and degree fully admits that he hasn't been back on campus since he graduated, doesn't donate to anything A&M related, and doesn't follow Aggie sports at all.

Who would some of y'all rather have around?

I was Class of 1991, but I graduated in 1993, so I put 93 on my ring, and I tell everyone that I am class of 93 because, well, that's when I graduated. Just makes sense to me.

I'm class of '87, but didn't complete my last few hours until '03 after a few years of entrepreneuring. My ring says '87 since I had 90 hours before I took my 'break'.

You can call your class your graduation year or your senior year but to use the phrase "I am the class of XX" implies to me you graduated at some point.
