Bastrop is a sleeper, dark horse, whatever you want to call it. We are going to build it right and keep the charm of a small Texas town next to the juggernaut that is Austin.
Once all the infrastructure is in place (happening now) Bastrop will be in a sweet spot - State Park (check), natural River/paddle trail/hike & bike (check), Main Street winner (check), established/vibrant Historical District (check), Food & Art District/live music scene (check)... what is lacking are the schools. It's a major issue and one that good folks are working hard to improve.
Id be curious to know what is being done to improve the schools (and what the issues that are holding that area back are), bastrop is one of the areas we are considering moving to and schools are a big part of our decision. Everything else about bastrop is great but the schools is our big hangup. Our oldest is 3 so as long as the "issues" would be improved upon we would be fine.
I have a large family. 8 kids. 5 of them are adults and have all attended college. 4 went through Bastrop ISD schools. 2 went to Cedar Creek HS and onto college (Texas A&M). The other 3 are at the Colorado River Collegiate Academy in Bastrop, TX. This is an early college HS which has a partnership with Austin Community College. 2 have graduated with 2 year college degrees. 1 is in her Junior year at TAMU-CC and the other will be joining her in the Fall '21. They want to live off campus. They both have raked in a bunch of college scholarship money and have borrowed very little. The other 3 will be attending CRCA.
CRCA is one of the
top HS in Texas academically. The reason is simple - they focus on academics. There has been no drop off from Catholic School (St. Mary's in Austin) to High School. That was not the case at Cedar Creek HS. Our girls there had to enroll in all the honor courses and Pre-AP just to get the good teachers in my opinion. Bastrop HS is very problematic - I think the best faculty left for Cedar Creek HS? Thankfully, CRCA is here (right across the street from BHS). No UIL Sports, but plenty of Clubs. It is early college, so your kid(s) will be taking college level courses by their 2nd year and will be taking a full college load by their senior year.
If your goal is to have your kids ready for college - CRCA is as good as any school you can find next to LASA in Austin - The Liberal Arts and Science Academy at LBJ. My oldest daughter graduated from the LASA program and went on to Rice University. She was kind of burned out though.
So to sum up - Bastrop HS (would need to get you kid all the Pre-AP and Honor courses). Same with Cedar Creek HS. CCHS is a nice High School experience - but can be a distraction. One of my daughters played softball and volleyball. Very demanding extracurricular schedule. Unless your kid has aspirations to play college sports may not be worth it. I feel like the coaches are using the kids to boost their resumes and move on to bigger schools (just my opinion).
It starts with home - all the kids are nice for the most part (a few bullies) - but it boils down to you and your kids. CRCA is a challenge - but my kids have made good friends that are smart and college bound.
HTH - sorry for the long response :-)
