I just don't see the hype over another grocery store.

HEB isn't "another grocery store"...it is THE grocery store. In 2011 I went to business school at that liberal miserable school in Austin and one of our case studies was on how HEB was developing a lot of their stores right next to Walmart and was kicking their ass. The store is just built different.

Bingo. They are the #2 grossing grocery store in the US. #2!!! and they're only in south/central Texas. That's insane.

Also, unless you live in this Kroger/Wal-mart supercenter desert, you have no room to talk. Can't wait to not have to stand in those terrible lines at Kroger with shelves unstocked or crap sitting on pallets in the middle of the aisle.

We drive to shop at central market to avoid our kroger. The kroger went completely down hill in 2020. Was a great store before. Now it sucks the life out of you just to grab a single item.

Or south Plano. We loved our Kroger at custer/Parker. It slowly went downhill though.

Central market is fine for a "grilling out on Saturday" and spending entirely too much money, but is not conducive to weekly grocery shopping for essentials.

A mega brand new HEB though… we'll be tailgating on opening day. My wife is from San Antonio so they're HEB fanatics.

Best pre made fajitas on the planet. We buy them and bring them home when visiting lol. Can't wait!

I'm from the San Antonio area myself. I simply cannot wait until HEB is complete here. I will definitely pull out of our hood and go down to Frisco as soon as it opens up there as well

I may be in the minority, but I'm a huge meat snob and Kroger runs some really good specials. They have pretty good choice bone-in ribeyes always on sale, choice briskets on sale for $1.99/lb fairly often (which are great for making sausage if you don't like choice briskets), and every couple months they'll have $.97/lb pork butts which is crazy cheap. Are they HEB, no? You can get some good meat deals there however. Not sure about all the other stuff though.

Same here… HEB will have those deals too… and probably even better!

Oh yeah. We've already timed the trip from the Frisco location to our neighborhood. 8 minutes with no traffic and not hitting the light at 380.

Once the overpass is done in the spring… bring it on baby.

When they opened the one in Hudson Oaks (just west of Aledo), it was immediately busy and has never let up. There is a definite build it, and they will come with HEB up here in DFW. Probably because we are so grocery store deficient... Albertsons, Kroger, Wal Mart, Tom Thumb - all trash. When I walk into Albertsons, it feels like they are trying extra hard to drive away customers.

The beauty is in their sourcing and general business model. Their own brands are cheaper then other name brands cause they source and act as their own middle men. It's grown into pretty much everything. That plus quality food and customer service and it's a very well received receipt.

Plus the good they do acting as Texas' version of FEMA is pretty good too. They were delayed in tackling DFW after Harvey ate into the budget with the wrecked stores and such.

So you're saying there is a chance? I emailed the real estate team about their "listing" on the LH Sunfresh location.
Quote:

Bill,

Couple of things on this property: HEB does not own the former Sun Fresh building or former fuel pad. Since we are a tenant and do not own, HEB could not sell the property, but could sell the lease.

At this time, HEB is still considering the site for some sort of future HEB use and is not marketing for lease or assignment.

Got it; thank you Brett. As a homeowner near this location, and CenTex native, I fully support HEB developing this center! And know that thousands of my fellow Lake Highlands and Lochwood neighbors feel the same.

Thank you, Bill

The HEB that is being built in Allen will be across the street (Greenville) from Kroger. I think the one in McKinnney on the Frisco border will be across the street from a Kroger also. I wonder if that is intentional like Lowes building close to a Home Depot?

Probably just the real estate. Grocery stores need a lot of acreage on a hard corner in densely populated areas with a lot of traffic. There aren't many of those left in DFW so often times when they develop (especially HEB since they're late to the party) they go in very close to another grocery store. That being said, they aren't afraid of any grocery store so they probably like being next to Kroger as well so they can steal their sales.

https://people.duke.edu/~dbr1/research/Hotellings-Law.pdf

  • Classifications: economics and strategy; formal models; industrial organization; industry structure and strategy.
  • Definition: According to a seminal paper by Harold Hotelling (1929), the most profitable location is next to a competitor in the middle of a geographic or product space.

Same principle applies to car dealerships in terms of being right next to the competition to make it easier.

My mom is a die hard Kroger fan and will drive 20 minutes out of her way to go to Kroger when the HEB is literally 2 minutes down the road....

I love HEB. I just wish they would orient their stores with the aisles perpendicular to the checkout lines. My local one always has congestion at the intersections.

do you mean parallel?

Just about every grocery store up here has them parallel... and the lines just back up down the aisles.

The main thing is HEB checkers know what they're doing and they get you out of there.

It'll be 2pm on a Sunday and Kroger has 3 lanes open and a bunch of morons trying to buy $350 worth of groceries at self-check.

I have only shopped at a H-E-B maybe 3 or 4 times ... location in College Station near Bryan (was in B/CS for A&M football games).

I immediately knew the shopping experience was new, different, & better.

Brighter inside, bigger isles, huge / deep selection... esp. their private label offerings. H-E-B's private label version of Cheetos ROCK.

Cannot wait for the McKinney location (Custer and Eldorado) opening. It is about 2 mi. door-to-door.

Krogers, Tom Thumb, and Wal Mart... better step up your game

I live near the one almost completed in Frisco. I'm rejoicing for that Prosper location as well, as I can't imagine the congestion that will ensue on Main between DNT & Legacy with everyone converging there from all directions.

The Frisco one is walking distance practically for me, we're in Shaddock. It has a BBQ restaurant which i hear is pretty good. We'll see. Kroger is F'ed. they're remodeling but the damage is done, their service is sheet. Market St is pretty solid.

I pray they can even move it. CRE is about to hit a wall unfortunately. We are all expecting the worst; hoping for only a minor downturn.

I'm hoping for anything in that spot. We've had about our last bad experience at Kroger on NW Hwy. I shop at pretty much all the surrounding stores for different reasons, but I would like a decent go to daily store.

I doubt HEB has anything to do with that. The demographic in that area is incredibly high with Asians and I think the influx of Asian specific markets has hurt it (Patel Bros & Swadeshi). Also, the Walmart at 121 and Custer is decent. Finally, that Kroger sucks like all the rest of them.

Edit- now seeing the article above. That new Kroger is way down there, interesting.
