Overnight models trending towards more precip including freezing rain for Tuesday evening and overnight.

Will see what the NWS has to say. If their model blend shows it I'd expect a winter weather watch or advisory issued tonight or tomorrow morning.

Is the concern power outages? This is a harsh but relatively quick cold spell. My pool ran for several days in a row in January.

I find sometimes the issue is when you drain, those annoying spots in valves etc that don't fully drain and freeze up.

This is why it's important to get an air compressor or vacuum and blow/suck the pumps dry. This will pull any excess water out of the pipes

All the major services this morning kind of went against this.

I'm not concerned with power outage. I'm concerned that my pump will run for 4 days straight for no other reason than to keep from freezing.

It takes me 5 minutes to drain the pump and filter. No need to blow excess water out. As long as the water in the pump/filter has room to expand nothing will crack.

Pool peeps, we cutting off and draining or going fingers crossed with freeze protect on this one?
i am leaning towards draining right now. Will make a final decision tomorrow after seeing the close in forecast. Don't think we are going to get much a of break during the day temperature wise thru Friday.

Looks like rain tomorrow. Might consider draining today while it is nice out…

Letting mine run. I covered my equipment for a bit of protection and plan on breaking any ice that forms on my tanning ledge.

How much do you drain? Just clear out the filter and pump, or do you remove water from the pool? I've let mine run when freezing, but it seems like such a waste.

Just the filter and pump. The pool froze in the 2021 freeze but I went out once a day and broke the ice. Hasn't frozen since.

PSA - If you're planning on letting your pool pump run instead of draining (I am), I recommend getting the free app "Outage Alarm" which will sound an alarm if your electricity goes out during the night, i.e., if your phone stops charging.

Then, ahead of time, mark all your drain plugs with blue tape or something that's easy to find in the middle of the night in case you need to drain your equipment after all.

Depends on pool set up. I can't just drain pumps and filter without dropping my main pool at least 12-18". With two main drains at bottom the gravity and weight just fill my pump back up. Then again, I could close off the valve main drain valve. But then I have water pressure on said valve with risk of freezing and popping.

Well now I am leaning towards draining.

I have some bubbles / air coming through my return jets. I am guessing it is an o-ring issue somewhere but not sure I want to run through all the checks today.

I thought i saw it a week or two ago but I have been working 15+ hour days and finally get today off but don't want to mess with my pool now.

Yes. Typically that means suction side issue and O ring or pool pump drain plug. I had same issue last year and it was driving me nuts. The small drain plug loosened enough not to leak but suck air in.

Feels like it happens about every year. Always replacing an o-ring.

re: shutting down…I just hate dealing with ice forming but maybe if it's just 3 days it won't be too bad. Feels like the ice then delays me being able to turn on pool for several days post freeze.

Well pools are one of the most common home-related problems related to extreme cold weather.

No pool? Then your problems are fewer and you should just sit back and smile that you do not have to deal with it. Beyond that this would just be a chat for the next few days saying "it is really cold"...

PSA- If you decide to cook some chili during the brutally cold weather (as we commonly do at our house), just make sure you don't blow out an O-ring afterward

That's interesting. I'm certainly no expert but that doesn't make sense gravity wise unless your pump is below the pool line. . I also have two bottom drains and when I shut it off the water recedes down the pipe to the pool line. In fact I usually have to prime the pump by pouring a bucket of water into the pump/pool inlet pipe to get the water to suck up and into the pump.

make sure if you have any check valves that the water behind them gets released. I have to take the 10 screws off of the valve cover and then just pull the spring loaded check gate open for a bit. This is the only thing that got me during snowmagedon. Had a pipe crack right below the check valve. Was a low cost lesson thank god.

Having a backyard pool/hot tub April thru October far outweighs the 2 weeks per year you have to deal with cold temps, especially with kids.

If you mean pumping the product, yes it was discussed. I bought three of them because of it.

Oddly enough, I'm running the heater on the pool today because it's nice enough outside for the kids and their friends (who are of course not in school today) to get in the hot tub.

Question for the other pool folks out there, does it make sense to run the heater along with the pool pump throughout the cold snap? The pump will be running continuously, but is there any advantage to having the pool heated to say 40 degrees just to be extra safe?

I think you are not suppose to run heater the entire time for condensation purposes.

Just run the pump(s) and make sure all water features etc are going too.

I keep going back and forth but back to just letting pool run for 2+ days.

Also one thing I do….i don't use the freeze protect. I put pool in service mode and just leave it all on. I find at fringe temps the pump turns on and off a lot and can't be good for the motor. I will flip to service mode tomorrow around 5PM.

My pool builder told me there is risk to the equipment to run your heater below freezing, so that's what I'm abiding by. I'm running my heater this afternoon and have raised the temp from 47F to 56F so far. I figure that helps in extreme cold.

You aren't supposed to run pool heater to try to heat your pool below 50. Can cause condensation inside the heater and all heating components will rust out n

This front is gonna surprise tomorrow I think. Coming in way earlier than forecast. Possibly as early as noon. Decent chance we catch some sort of sleet/ice/snow as it passes.

Below freezing through Friday early afternoon
