Karbach must have some big $$$ behind that place. They may be a start-up but they sure don't appear to have start-up finances.

he mentioned to me he had several investors. He has some kick ass, successful experience in it, probably not a huge gamble in the investors eyes. He said he came to houston for exactly the reason we're seeing: no competition. He's from denver and maryland, dang smart move on his part.

^Basically. Wasn't some kid from UH or Rice that decided to jump in and try it out. There's a good reason why they've had as much success as they've had in what's been about six months of operations.

Ok, so I hit City Acre today.  Not bad, but I really don't see myself ordering multiple glasses at a bar.  The brews were interesting:

The first, the saison, was good.  Not an all day Saison but I could use a little more flavor.  Not a bad beer, though.  It got better as it settled in.

The helles just wasn't my style... Not a lot of flavor and not interesting to me.

The Chai Porters were  very, very interesting...lots of spices with some being more intense with cinnamon or pine than the others.

The chocolate stout was great, with a biIt of fruit on it.  The strawberry stout was a little too fruity.

Bottom line:  good, interesting beers but they'll need one for the masses (instead of intense, one and done beers) to be profitable.

Had Pontificator this weekend. Thought it was OK. Not great. Not bad. I really didn't get much (any) smoky taste from it. It also had a very weak finish which seems strange for such a dark beer.

I also had Texas Independence Winter Warmer... that was some good stuff.

Also had Pontificator this weekend. I agree with your opinion.

Some other locals I tried this weekend:

Southern Star Pro-Am 2011 (Cascadian dark ale). Excellent.

Buffalo Bayou Gingerbread Stout. Good. The gingerbread was pretty faint, though.

All you ballers can now purchase st. A stock!

Will be interesting to see what happens to them now. I never believed that they would stay Texas(and LA)only.

Louisiana has been the one state we thought we might expand into since it is closer to us than most of Texas

If that's the idea, they can distribute to OK, KS, kansas city, AR, Memphis, LA, MS, AL, FL, and GA.. and still be closer than some of texas!

quote:
Under the Securities Act of 1933, a company that offers or sells its securities must register the securities with the SEC or find an exemption from the registration requirements. The Act provides companies with a number of exemptions. For some of the exemptions, such as rules 505 and 506 of Regulation D, a company may sell its securities to what are known as "accredited investors."

The federal securities laws define the term accredited investor in Rule 501 of Regulation D as:

a bank, insurance company, registered investment company, business development company, or small business investment company;
an employee benefit plan, within the meaning of the Employee Retirement Income Security Act, if a bank, insurance company, or registered investment adviser makes the investment decisions, or if the plan has total assets in excess of $5 million;
a charitable organization, corporation, or partnership with assets exceeding $5 million;
a director, executive officer, or general partner of the company selling the securities;
a business in which all the equity owners are accredited investors;
a natural person who has individual net worth, or joint net worth with the person’s spouse, that exceeds $1 million at the time of the purchase, excluding the value of the primary residence of such person;
a natural person with income exceeding $200,000 in each of the two most recent years or joint income with a spouse exceeding $300,000 for those years and a reasonable expectation of the same income level in the current year; or
a trust with assets in excess of $5 million, not formed to acquire the securities offered, whose purchases a sophisticated person makes.

I would like to know why they are diluting company ownership for such a small sum, and what they plan on doing with the money.

Maybe St. Arnold's will invest in some carpet for the ceiling of the tasting area to make it less "active".

Just wanted to let you all know The Hay Merchant is worth the drive if you are thinking of going. A group of friends and I went on sunday afternoon when the weather was nice. Great selection afforable prices, but they had not started their "mud turtle" program yet. I had Rahr and Son's Ugly Pug, Buffalo Bayou's 1886 (i think that was the number), and Cask Moylan's Kilt lifter. They also had an interesting menu including meat chips, ox tail, and a few other interesting items.

Side Note: The owners of Rahr and Sons, Indepence, and No label were all their enjoying the opening.

The SA share offering is interesting. They're only looking to raise $1MM? Seems they could easily find an individual investor to provide that much or more. Can't help but wonder if this is a crummy investment. Maybe a sign of weakness as they face more local competition? Then again, there seems to be no shortage of people willing to line up to pay exorbitant sums of money to find the latest DR or limited release.

I wish I had the means to inquire. I'm not interested in investing, but I'd sure like to be given the opportunity to look at their financials and see their BD plan.

I went on a tour or St A yesterday. They were bragging about their new $400K centrifugal filtration system. They're thinking this will be their only type of filtration from now on.

They had only just gotten it and were still testing so maybe its an investment to get a larger filter system...

Went to Hay Merchant on Wednesday night. My wife fell in love with Buffalo Bayou Gingerbread Stout. I finally had Brew Dog Dogma and was similarly enthralled. And Hay Merchant will definitely make it in my rotation.

I found it in bottles at D&Q last week. They had it in their cooler of singles on the far right. I think they had a few more at the time.

I thought hay merchant scored A+ on beers, but about a C- on food. too expensive for the size of portions.. $10 for a hotdog, didn't even come with fries. $10 for a grilled chicken salad that came in side salad bowl, was lettuce, tomato and spinach leaves, and was covered in fatty, dark meat chicken.

Real talk for second, yo:

Hay Merchant is a cool place, but some of the prices are ass. For real. Unless your name is Catch is something, make sure you know what the market value of what you're paying for is.

Example. Filled a growler of Buffalo Bayou's Gingerbread Stout at D&Q for $12.00 last week. The old lady and I finished that with the quickness. Went back for a refill a few days ago and Brandon was out.

So I see they have it at Hay Merchant and I go for the fill. I don't ask for the price, but already assume that's it's gonna be a little higher.

So I grab a La Mort Vivant which was on cask (which was magnificent...), while she fills it. Comes back and that Gingerbread Stout fill was $25.00, man. SMH.

In sum, fill your jug at D&Q or Whole Foods if you can.

Damn, that's crazy. I got some at D&Q last week too(I just have the 32oz), and it was about $5-$6.

Mental note....ask for price before filling at Hay Merchant.

Bellaire Whole Foods has it on tap too. Stopped by to get some yesterday, and they had just run out. I think they had another keg of it, but no one to change it(or some such stupidity).
