Spent some time at the Rolex AD today. Wanted to like the Explorer II, but my wrists are just too small.

Was surprised that the GMT felt a little lighter than the Sub. The salesman didn't believe me so he went to weigh it. Sure enough. Lighter. Bezel is just a little busy though and the polished center links worry me. That said, I liked it more than I thought.

They didn't have a hulk. Had one for 5 minutes yesterday and someone walked in a bought it as they were putting it out.

Really liked the Tudor Pelagos, but is probably too thick, as I really want to wear it with dress shirts on occasion.

Heritage Black Bay with reddish/maroon bezel was a beut, but no date is a deal killer

At the end, there's just nothing like the sub. Just looks so perfect on the wrist. No wonder it's been an icon for so long.

Man, seeing that shot of Bond's 6538 reminds me of what a poor comparison my steinhart is of it. It's a great watch that I love but it has about 1/10th of the sex appeal of the rolex.

I consider myself a watch guy, but nothing compared to some of you guys. I kind of got into it accidentally. My wife and I got hammered on rum punch and Red Stripe in Ochos Rios, Jamaica on our honeymoon, wandered into town, and bought his/hers Tag Heuers. We barely remembered it the next morning, but by that point we were in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico and couldn't do anything about it.

I started appreciating my watch, and watches in general and decided to make it a thing to get a nice watch at various milestones. I got an Oris whenever I graduated from business school, and will get a $5-10k watch when I get my next big promotion. Not sure what yet, so this thread has been awesome.

The Oris is a dress watch, but I beat the crap out of my Tag. I'll wear it anywhere and everywhere, but that's how I roll. I don't trash my stuff, but I don't worry about using it and want to enjoy what I have.

The dirty ass Tag:

Stock photo of the Oris:

If someone doesn't understand why you'd pay thousands for a watch that keeps way worse time than a $15 Timex, you just aren't the type of guy that would get into it. There's nothing wrong with that, different strokes.

I love the idea of handing these down to my kids, especially since they are tied to milestones. I think Soup's collection is so damn cool. I want my kids/grandkids to have that. And even on the LOLPOOR Tag and Oris, someone will be able to repair/service the ETA movements for a long, long time.

Awesome thread!

This is the key - if you decide to spend $900+ on a watch, make sure you spend the extra to get the automatic movement. While it may be more price wise and won't keep as good as time as a quartz, it will always have the ability to be worked on and can be keepsake for an heir.

My grandfather bought a quartz Omega in the 80's and had an automatic Seiko he bought in the Middle East from the 70's. The Omega was not able to be repaired and is nothing more than a paper weight. I had the Seiko fully serviced, threw a croc strap on it, and it's like new.

I found another watch at my grandparents house in a drawer that was the watch my great grandfather was wearing in a portrait. That watch was an old railroad company watch that was a manual wind. I had it completely serviced and my mom wears that watch daily. My grandmother thinks this watch was purchased sometime in the 20's.

Automatic =/ mechanical

Isn't automatic a type of mechanical watch? Not including Eco-drive solar heat whatever.

Mechanical = no electronics. Automatic = a mechanical watch with a weighted rotor that winds it?

Let me correct myself. not all mechs are autos. My point was you can have a very nice non automatic watch.

He's talking about hand wind watches like the Speedmaster or the Panerai

"all" automatics are mechanical but not all mechanicals are automatics

I think it was clear what Kurt meant. He specifically mentioned quartz.

I didn't know anything about watches when I bought my Tag. They had both automatic and quartz, and I got automatic because it sounded better than replacing batteries.

Now, the mechanical movement is the whole point to me. I got lucky in picking automatic, because I wouldn't feel the same way about the quartz model.

I hadn't seen this posted here yet, and it's a good source of information to the relative watch newbie (like me) --

Also, because of this thread, the auto-ad feature puts that damn $85,000 skull watch at the bottom of the page each time.

I think that article was written by Jordan Belfort.

Guys, the article was written by GSElevator, who had the twitter account, "Overheard in the Goldman Sachs Elevator." So yes, it basically was Jordan Belfort. https://twitter.com/GSElevator

Totally NSFW, but this story is one of my favorites: http://totalfratmove.com/a-gselevator-valentines-day/

He also wrote a book, which is pretty fun about his time as a bond trader in Asia.

What do y'all think of the updated Explorer I? Looking for a good all-around watch. From suit to shorts.

That's my least favorite Rolex though it's as durable as any other sport model.

Something just as unassuming would be the Explorer II with either dial.

At least you'd take advantage of the date and the GMT function.

I guess I was hoping the smooth bezel (vs fluted), the numbers, and the oyster bracelet made it a little sportier than the DJ.

I'm probably just trying too hard. A little disappointed in how the SubC wore on my fairy wrists. Want to try out the new 2016 39.5mm Planet Ocean with thinner case.

Yeah, tried on the Explorer II at the AD this weekend. Case was too big for me.

I have the tiny wrists of an industrial revolution waif and I think a sub looks ok on me. Either you have bird bones or you're too worried.

Also, beware that smooth bezel. That looks like a ding and scratch collection waiting to happen.

Old model Sub looks good. New SubC was kinda big. Not ruling it out, just keeping my options open. Explorer II was too big. Bracelet went straight down from the lugs.

That doesn't sound all that big. I consider myself to have small wrists and I just measured at just under 7.25". My DJ (36mm) looks just fine.

The Explorer is more of a sport watch where the DJ is more of a dressier watch. For me, I'd take the Explorer of it would be my everyday watch over the DJ.

Get the previous generation Explorer II if your sensitive about your wrist size.

It may not be new, but it won't break the bank either.
