Isn't The Maple Leaf a hockey backer bar in midtown?

One of the biggest issues is that the team is utter crap.

It's really, really bad. One or two solid players, but it needs an overhaul, so it's going to be much harder to make a splash immediately, like a Vegas or Seattle (round two of the playoffs in the second season isn't bad).

Hopefully, they go ahead and engage, and maybe start getting some input into clearing out deadweight and building capital. I'd love to see them wind up in Houston.

Hell, University of Houston just approved a club hockey team, for crying out loud.

Yeah, started by a Canadian who bartender at Keneall's before opening his dream ex-pat hockey bar.

So were the Ravens when they left Cleveland. Look how that went for them in 2000 & 2012

Looked up stars season ticket prices. You could split 2 seats with 8 guys. Mid ice 2nd row of upper terrace. For like $1200-$1300 bucks a man. You'd do a draft for which games. 10 or so games a man. Worth it and fun. I'd figure out a group like that if we had a team.

Drinking some cold ones and watching hockey is severely underrated in the warmer states. Last hockey game I went to was 2018 at Madison square garden on st. Pattys day. It was nuts and we had crap seats.

Had a buddy go to two stars important playoff games with nice seats and said it was amazing.

Playoff hockey is awesome. Even on TV. I can't imagine what a big playoff game with best seats in the house in a prime market would be like.

It's so infuriating that they let bud Adams take all the oilers history/records etc with them when they left. We had ownership groups teed up immediately and could have figured it out. Having to reboot with a full expansion team was awful. (Hockey is obviously diff with their draft rules etc).

But Cleveland getting to retain their brand and history and Houston not with the lame duck year where the broadcast roasted us as bad fans (so dumb) is prob one of the worst episodes of Houston sports history.

It would be fitting for Houston sports to miss out on the Phoenix relocation. Get granted an expansion team with Atlanta in a few years, and the league change the expansion team draft rules and see a Texans first decade 2.0 in hockey.

Either way, even if we were awful for a good length of time, I'd be in for a hockey team. I really do think we're ready.

Good on them for not subsidizing another billionaires stadium.

Use the Aeros name and make them Oiler Colors. Perfect nostalgia combo.

Live hockey is incredible. You simply can't compare it to watching on TV. And live playoff hockey is incredible x 1000.

When you are there in person, you can see the puck movement so much better and after awhile, you learn to anticipate where it is going and what will happen when it gets there.

As a kid, I went to many, many WHA Aeros games, and I had season tickets to the IHL/AHL Aeros. I miss it.

One of my favorite sports memories of all time was being at the Summit to see Aeros win the Turner Cup in 1999.

That Turner Cup run ruled.

I refuse to get my hopes up again, especially after Fertitta made his comment about "hoping no one pays the (expansion) fee."

I think he'll go for a WNBA team and leave it at that. Much cheaper; requires fewer building retrofits; and gives him social credit points.

Retrofits are done.

The $2B rumored price tag is ridiculous. For reference Seattle paid 600 only 5 or so years ago.

$2 Billion is asinine. Sure, the teams are currently profitable but it would take roughly 30 years of running the team to make as much income as $2 Billion and there is no guarantee he or his family would be able to sell the team for $2 Billion after he passes. All of this assumes the team is good and sticks around in Houston for the long term. The only other market that could buy Fertitta out to move a team if Houston doesn't support the team is Quebec City, Portland or Phoenix again (assuming Atlanta gets the other expansion team.) Hockey fans are loyal but the NHL isn't exactly a growing sports league. I don't blame Fertitta if he says no to an expansion team.

I didn't realize the building was ready for NHL hockey. That's good news.

Agree on the price tag and I'm okay with Fertitta posturing to try and get a better deal, especially this early. But we've been down this road so many times it's tough to be optimistic.

Houston needs pro hockey. However, I agree the $2B price tag is ridiculous. Bring in an AHL team, and when the time is right, bring in a relocation team.

Dad was an WHA Aeros season ticket holder and when the Aeros restarted in '94 with IHL I had 4 seats blue line on the ice. Can't skate to save a life but love the sport. Bring it back !

Yep.

Some of my best memories -- as a kid and as a young adult with kids of my own -- revolve around Aeros games.

I love hockey and would consider season tickets but the thought of having to drive into downtown during the week in the evening doesn't sound fun at all.

Yeah the Summit/Compaq Center was ideal for folks on the south and southwest side.

I could be home in about 20 minutes once I made it out of the garage and onto the freeway.

I'll will be racing to a sign up list the second this is announced even though with this 2 billion dollar price tag they won't be cheap.

I would be more optimistic if Fertitta seemed to have any interest in the NHL other than to fill dates in the Toyota Center.

Ryan Smith in Utah made it clear he wanted a hockey team and he courted Bettman and the NHL. I don't see that same fire in Fertitta.
