Buddy of mine in Florida has some close friends from his church coming to MD Anderson for the wife's treatment and they're looking to do something for her and her husband since they'll be some 12 hours from home.

Whether it's sending them food from a restaurant or us here in Houston helping out and bringing them home cooked food or just something nice for them.

Anybody know the ins & outs of what's allowed or ideas of something nice for them?

And, fck cancer.

My sister (c/o 2000), just finished her chemo and stem cell replacement at MD Anderson two months ago. She was there over a month. I brought her food all the time. Its no big deal. The only thing they're strict about is overnight stays. After 11pm only 1 family member is allowed to stay.

They are very good about this kind of stuff within reason. We were able to bring in anything Wearer of My Ring wanted. Food delivery goes to the front door and then is delivered from there by MDA staff. So like door dash type stuff wont arrive at the room piping hot. There are microwaves on each floor though. The hospital food is kind of bland but you can get fairly good sandwiches and the breakfast omelettes are pretty good. The chocolate ice cream is very good!

Doctors are terrific. Nurses and their helpers are amazing.

Key to the process is to continue to pray and keep the prayer team up to date. When you pray you are talking to SomeOne Who can do something about it.

Bring in as much outside food as possible. For being a world class leader in cancer treatment and research the food options and quality of said food absolutely sucks for both patients and visitors.

I had a fantastic turkey burger there. It was the first food I had eaten in days so my opinion might be skewed.

Most of what I had there was fine. If she is doing chemo her tastebuds are going to be screwed anyway.

  • I am in helping deliver as well as bring home cooked food. Recommend individual portion meals as there are not refrigerators. Or bring a cooler/ice packs. Might be worthwhile to set up a calendar/sign up sp they are not overwhelmed. Email in profile if you want to talk offline.
  • This link includes directions to the nearest parking garage, valet parking, and an app to download specific to MD Anderson. The ACC is basically the ER for MD Anderson. The name was changed to keep random patients from coming in bc they are set up for that.

  • The Zoo, Minute Maid Park (Astros) various museums, and Memorial Park is nearby but it is super hot and areas can be sketchy due to crime/homeless.

Good company taqueria is over there off Kirby.

Pretty much everything there is awesome.

They even have maybe a top 5 burger in Houston.

Plenty of food delivery around. The biggest thing I can offer is the amazing valet service and it costing only $20 for a full day of appointments. I can't understand why anyone would go through the effort and hassle to self-park in one of their garages. I find the hospital food plenty adequate but I'm not picky.

Thanks for all the replies. I also found out that I've got a connection there who's an exec of some kind. He's sort of a half-assed in-law to my wife's former step-mother who I can call on.

Because sometimes the valets have taken forever to get your car back to you.

And my neighbor that was going there had something stolen out of her car there. No sign of a break-in. Valets were the only ones with access.

If you are visiting the clinic side of MDA then Parking Lot #10 is best. On the east side of the campus. If visiting the Hospital then try Lot #2 and try to stay on the east side of that lot. that will put you right across the street from the main entrance. I have learned to just go to the top levels and not poke around looking for a space. Always empty at the top and easy to park right by the elevator. Most of my experience is in #10. And by most of my experience I mean i sorted my bank account over the last two years and found out I have spent over $2,000 in parking down there. !!

The Mays Clinic garage is cheaper than the other garages, and it always has lots of open spaces. It also has green lights above the open spots so they're easy to find. There's a long skybridge connecting it to the main campus with a steady stream of shuttles.

Also, Mays parking lot doesn't add sales tax like the others started doing, and it accepts HSA cards for payment.

My HSA card doesn't work at garages 2 or 10, or when trying to buy a value pass. Those are owned by the medical center, while Mays garage is owned by MD Anderson.

I've never known my HSA card to "care" where you use it. Maybe it depends on who the issuer is.

That's a risk potentially at any valet service. So far, I've been impressed at MDA.

At Mays, disabled vets park for free. My dad was my chemo buddy and it made him happy to help with the parking.
