Maybe because Tony's is not good. I am surprised you didn't notice that when you started eating at Los Tios.BigAg_12 said:
Why aren't y'all just going to Tony's? Moved west of town so now it's Los Tios but loved Tony's when we were in Garden Oaks.

But, back to the OP. We just don't eat out much anymore. Partly because of crazy prices. Partly because we have a 3 year old and 5 month old and it's just easier cooking at the house.
I like intact windows on my car.

Teotihuacan I think is the best value in Mexican food in the city.

Since Tony died it has gone downhill. Used to go there a lot but haven't been in years.

Where are these non overhyped places that non-whites go to? This is something people like to regurgitate but never list any super authentic Mexican restaurants because they don't have any.
Or drive down Long Point or any similar street around lunch time and stop at any restaurant that looks crowded.Panama Red said:Captain Winky said:

The non-whites aren't going to "super authentic Mexican" restaurants. They are also eating tex-Mex. If you want authentic Mexican, go to place like Hugo's or Tatemo.
If you want to eat where the Mexicans are eating, go to a place like Merida, Teotihucan, La Mexicana, Puebla or Alma Latina.
Wait...we're supposed to share that?Sea Speed said:schmellba99 said:It's also a function of the fact that a significant contingent of the population doesn't have a whole lot of disposable income to drop $150 or whatever on a dinner for two very often.Ciboag96 said:
The sancha and I have noticed that restaurants are rarely 30% full anymore. So many people door dashing and not being civilized human beings and going out to eat, I suspect we'll see a bunch more closures.
Hell, going to a fast food joint these days runs $15 per person. Money is much tighter than it was just a handful of years ago.
40 pack of nuggets and two large fries for $15 on the McDonald's app for the win. You get nuggets, and you get nuggets and YOU GET NUGGETS.

Ha didn't realize Tony's Mexican had a Tony die recently. Figured you were taking about fancy Tony's and Tony Vallone who passed a few years ago.
I thought people went to Tony's because you could get really drunk off their margaritas. The food was always an afterthought.TXAG 05 said:Aggie09Derek said:TXAG 05 said:WES2006AG said:Maybe because Tony's is not good. Very serious. Last couple times we went it was just bad. Maybe they've figured it out since then.
Tony, the patriarch, passed way kinda early in covid, I think. Since then they seem to lean more into the party times on the weekends w/ the outdoor stage and margaritas outside..Aggie09Derek said:

Don't want to start a foodie fight, but Los Tios and Tony's are pretty comparable to me. Grew up on both. Love the margs at both, and both just sloppy, hearty Tex-Mex.WES2006AG said:Maybe because Tony's is not good. I am surprised you didn't notice that when you started eating at Los Tios.BigAg_12 said:

People like you go into Mexican restaurants and say hola and over enunciate when asking for tortillas and guacamole.
Same, I don't think there's good Mexican food north of 10. I did go to a good place in Phoenix earlier this year, I think this is it.William Foster said:
I hope we can all agree how good we have it here at least...our crappiest Mexican and Tex-Mex is better than just about anything you can find in the rest of the country. I used to travel to California and Arizona quite a bit back in the day for wk. A handful of times, people would be excited to take me to a Mexican restaurant. Whether they were bragging on the food or the rita's, it was all sh** compared to what I was used to. Cant remember the name of the place in Phoenix, but it's very popular with the locals...and I would honestly take Chili's over it.
We are spoiled.
Had the same experience visiting Santa Fe for work. Went to a "legendary" mexican place and sat at the bar.William Foster said:
