This all sounds incredibly terrible and unappealing. Why does every damn thing have to be a special novel thing?!?! Social media I guess... Makes an old like me really dislike this world sometimes...
I guess it's all in how you look at it. We've been to several of these places and had a ball. Even if the drinks are premium prices, the whole vibe is happy and festive. And, in a increasingly underdressed world, the amount of effort a lot of people put into dressing up to go to these is impressive- not costumes, but upscale and seasonal clothing. It's a lot of fun if you let it be.

Are there any Kalahari people at these things?

Ba-humbug! Yeah I get it - just more thinking I'd be annoyed if I just wanted to go get a drink somewhere (not knowing about this new trendy thing going on) and it was some overcrowded circus.

Reminds me of one of my long time old favorite movie quotes (it's "seasonal" too):

"Hey look, mister. We serve hard drinks in here for men who want to get drunk fast, and we don't need any characters around to give the joint "atmosphere".

Johnny's Gold Brick is way too nice to be a dive bar.

Seriously, **** right off with thinking JGB is a dive bar. ****ing millenials

I'm not even sure there are all that many dive bars left in Houston. I'm way, way out of the loop on it but legit dives still around would probably be limited to:
- Shiloh Club
- Rose Garden
- West Alabama Ice House
- Ron's Pub
- Rudyard's (maybe)

And there's one other place that I can't recall the name that I stumbled in and out of several times over the years but it's been a long time. I want to say it was on the far SW side of downtown, maybe even into Midtown a bit. Ground floor of an older building that was maybe 3-4 stories tall and IIRC, it had a fairly ornate facade painted red.
You wouldn't consider places like these dives?

Warren's Inn
Catty Corner
The Spot (previously Sundown Saloon)
Lone Star Saloon
Lola's Depot (I thought it closed but it's apparently still open)

Could be but I thought it was just built to look old. I may be thinking of the wrong spot though.

No. It closed a couple years ago. It is now "Heights Drive Inn" another hipster bar made to look like a dive.

If I wanted to pay $17 for a drink with unique ingredients, I'd just to a Texans game and get a Bud Light Lime.
Yeah but this way you don't have to suffer through a Texans game.

We've been to Miracle at Johnny's two years in a row now.

It's a good way to get in the Christmas spirit. Seems like this year more people were dressed in holiday gear -- saw some pretty awesome get-ups. People really put some effort into it.

Drinks are expensive ($17) but interesting. Lots of unique ingredients and concoctions.

Reservations recommended.

Sounds very Instagram friendly.

I'll pass.

I guess Christmas pop-up bars are the latest and greatest things now.

Went to the Frosty's Christmas Experience in EaDo last night, and if you're into Christmas, this is a place to check out. Tons of decorations everywhere, Christmas themed cocktails. It's not cheap, but nothing good is.

I also visited Holly Jolly Bar at McIntyre's Downtown before, it was also well done.

Then there are dive bars reconfigured as Christmas pop-ups. Johnny's Gold Brick (a true hole in the wall dive) and Winnie's on Main. These are sister bars that are rebranded as "Miracle at ...". Not quite on par with Frosty's or Holly Jolly, but festive in their own right.

Anyone have any others?
we are going to Frosty's on friday night. I'm nervous the amount of people is going to make it unbearable for me. I hate people. What is the parking situation like? We have a hotel booked downtown to stay at. I am assuming it would be best to just uber there?
You're traveling into town and booked a hotel to go to a ****ty Christmas bar?

To each his own, but the Instagram/TikTok thirst-trap talent that was on display this past Monday was definitely a field of 5-star recruits- and that was on Monday. I'm sure the closer it gets to the weekend will only get better.

Also, my gf loves Christmas. So if spending a couple of hours drinking holiday themed drinks puts her in the giving spirit I feel like it was time well spent.

So apparently they do this at the christmas themed bars in Wrigleyville. It is called the Twelve bars of christmas. It is apparently a hot mess.

If you want a truly great Christmas themed dive bar, you gotta head to NOLA and check out Snake and Jake's.

Still remember the look on my brother's face when we got there about 3:00 a.m., he looks at it and then looks at me and says "we're going in there!?"

If it takes $20 cocktails to get her in "the giving spirit" look elsewhere.

I'd check that they have TVs showing the games first. If they have TVs at all they will probably be showing Christmas movies.

It's kind of interesting that many of the same people that tried way too hard to tell their weekly drunken bar exploits on here a decade or 2 ago are now somehow the good time bar gatekeepers even they moved out in the burbs and block parties.
