Houston Mayor John Whitmire will no longer be eligible to receive his party's endorsement in future elections.

Harris County Democrats voted Sunday 186 to 80 to bar Whitmire from seeking the party's endorsement, citing widespread disapproval of the mayor's decision to cozy up to Republicans. Critics pointed specifically to his support for the Houston Police Department's ongoing cooperation with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement and his appearance at a fundraiser for GOP U.S. Rep. Dan Crenshaw.

I get that there are others who will try, but Whitmire has the crossover vote. Republicans know they aren't getting a GOP in the office, but Whitmire at least aligns with enough common-sense initiatives to keep them happy.

Hell, he beat SJL by almost 30pts in 2023.

There could well be a Republican who sees an opening to line up R votes against a fractured D voter base. Whitmire was going to win R votes every time against SJL. Against a reputable R candidate, perhaps not.

John Whitmire is just like former mayor Bill White. Intelligent, but he has no common sense. He still hasn't figured out how to fix the roads, trash problems, and even the rats in city hall. Not to mention the ongoing cluster called Houston IAH airport. All while the taxpayers are still being fleeced by the contractors.

Bill White is still responsible for many daily crimes here after bringing the Katrina refugees to Houston.

These Democrats, even the smartest and best educated ones, lack common sense.

Blanket statements without any first hand knowledge doesn't exactly exude common sense intelligence either.

Whitmire's problem turned out to be that he wants to be mayor without actually having to BE mayor. He doesn't like making even marginally difficult decisions and he tries to ignore problems, hoping they eventually go away or people stop talking about them. He has also been very publicly exposed for lying to the public and media (he's not used to having all of his communications dumped in TPIA requests).

Not enough to matter. Trump got 46.5% of Harris Co. in 2024. Whitmire's crossover appeal has him firmly in that seat for a 2nd term. The numbers to displace him just do not exist.

He meant "contractors", as in people who get sole source contracts via their political connections and aren't expected to actually do anything to earn their payments; not "Contractors" who actually have to bid against each other for the work and are expected to actually complete their tasks before getting paid.

Nobody ever uses the bike lanes in Spring Branch.

I am in favor of sidewalks and upkeeping them. I am in favor of crosswalks and vehicles yielding to them. But bike lanes are ridiculous.

The trash pick up is interesting since we pay a garbage managment fee from our HOA. I was unaware of that and to switch to city of Houston would be a risky move since I doubt they have the capital to take it on.

I'm not seeing much improvement on roads these days but I guess Houston has a lot of them.

Also not entirely certain of this homeless center in EaDo. I am ok with the Hermann park renovation. Playing golf there was pretty LOL.
