We get the wind here in Amarillo. But Lubbock by far is the biggest crap hole of a town I have ever seen. It makes Amarillo look wonderful.

In my 21+ years of living here, the one main thing i can say about the drivers is that most of them have never even heard of the word "merge". That and with the state of the road construction around town, its enough to drive anyone crazy, especially when they try to turn a 3/4 lane road into 1 lane, all at once.

I'm a little biased on this, but I agree with everyone's opinions of Lubbock High, except for the safety part. The only thing I ever say happen was a few cars were broken in to during weekend UIL trips. My dad teaches at Coronado though, so I have to throw in something about them. While Lubbock High pretty much dominates all of the academic competitions in the area, all of the schools are fairly good.

Anyone have any thoughts on private vs. public schools?

The public schools in Lubbock are very good, and I would say that your money would be better spend elsewhere than on private school. I have a large number of friends who attended both All-Saints or Trinity and they were no better prepared than those of us public schoolers. But as an LISD product I guess I should feel that way.

I can't speak to the Lubbock ISD schools with any experience, except from watching my friends children and serving on a scholarship committee. I live in a small town close to Lubbock. It is a nice, quiet, safe town, well located to the city, but I have not been impressed with the schools. They are very limited with respect to their cirriculum and don't really stress academics. If a child is well prepared for college, it's because they've done it on their own. I put my son in a private school in Lubbock, and it's much better, and has a Christian approach. I think the Frenship school district at Wolfforth is probably the best school district in the area, outside of the magnet school in Lubbock. In my committee work the kids I see from Lubbock High far exceed the others. And of the rest, Frenship seems to be the next best.

Ummmm, yeah, I'm gonna have to go ahead and disagree with you on that one.

Lubbock > Amarillo

I agree with Shall-Amarillo is a much nicer city. The dirt and dust are not nearly as bad, and it's just more clean. Also, it is not dominated by a college and the medical center like Lubbock. It seems to have a much more diverse economy, and for all the world, I'll bet it is safer with a lower crime rate (no statistics to back that up, but just a gut feel from having been there many times). Plus, the north plains are just more scenic with more color than the south plains because of the diversity of the terrain and the ag operations. Doesn't help Russ with the schools, but just my thoughts.

I grew up 30 miles from Lubbock, and now live 15 miles from Amarillo. If Amarillo were rated as a 10, I'd rate Lubbock as a 6. Sorry WestTx, I wonder if you've been around Amarillo at all.

And I agree with the overall feeling of safety. Nothing to back it up, just that Amarillo has always felt safer.

Looks like crime is identical.

Amarillo and Lubbock crime rates are twice the national average????

Makes me skeptical.

WT Ag hasn't posted the weather in Lubbock for the day so I thought I would- 68 degrees, wind blowing a constant 30 mph with gusts over 40, near 50; Lots of dirt in the air, and a wild fire out of control near Snyder. Welcome to our spring.

Yeah, weather sucked today. At least it isn't cold. Sick of the cold weather. I'm trying to rig up a trip to S Padre next month.

You can think Amarillo is better than Lubbock and that's fine. A couple of others have some good points. But this is an excessively dramatic statement. The two places are pretty similar in relation to other TX cities.

I understand hating it for tard-town, but the dust isn't as big of an issue as most make it out to be. South Plains has 4 or 5 good dust storms a year, and mostly condensed in the period from about now until the 1st part of April.

There are good people in Lubbock. There are good people in Amarillo. Both places have good and bad parts of town. In Lubbock you have to put up w the Tek crowd. In Amarillo you have to put up with being as close to Denver as you are to Dallas.

Either way, it is a different culture/life-style than living in the Texas Triangle, and most people either love it and never want to leave or hate it and never want to come here/can't wait to get out.

Spent plenty of time in Amarillo. Made about 30 trips up there over the past 2 years working on a real estate project there. I like Amarillo fine. It definitely has some advantages over Lubbock, but I sure wouldn't say it is a lot better place by any means as was suggested. I don't like Texas Tech at all, but having a university of that size adds a whole other dynamic to a city. Lubbock has the advantage there. Also, I am in commercial real estate. There is absolutely no comparison in the number of quality retail projects. Lubbock has much more quality retail/restaurant/office developments. Of course, I am ok with this, as it created an opportunity for us to do a nice project in Amarillo. Trying to help you guys catch up a little in that regard.

Well, that explains it...that darned personal preference rears its ugly head.

I really don't think Tech adds a lot to Lubbock beyond students and congestion. Well, maybe a really nice museum in the Ranching Heritage Center.

And since I have nothing to do with retail development, and feel like Amarillo already has more shops, offices and restaurants than I'll ever visit, I'm fine with the number there now.

If anything, it seems Soncy road is over-building.

I will be able to contribute more to this Amarillo/Lubbock debate after this summer.

Fair and balanced reporting!

Forget Lubbock vs. Amarillo. We need a Levelland vs. Canyon discussion.

bah, no way dude

Hereford = Levelland X 1000
Littlefield = Levelland + dairy smell

Really, other than Hereford, they all smell the same to me. feed lot + crude + natural gas + (sometimes) dairy = typical west texas town smell

Where does my home town of Brownfield rank? Ok, don't answer that, but it has to at least be ranked above Lamesa.

By the way, I was in Amarillo yesterday. One more thing is that Amarillo has strip clubs spread randomly throughout the city. Take that how you want.

Yesterday 80 degrees and gorgeous.

Today, a bit cooler - 66 degress - and breezy - 15 mph - and still gorgeous.

Those of us who grew up here - born in Lamesa, grew up in Brownfield and Lubbock - don't mind the dust storms. It helps keep out the riff raff. Them we send to Amarillo.

As a native of Lamesa, I would say they tie. They seem to have a Springfield/Shelbyville feeling to them. Everything looks the same, but is in a slightly different location.

Man I'm glad I escaped from that hell hole.

riff raff wind up in Amarillo b/c that's just where they land, being the junction of two interstates

that's why it's easier to find cheap booze and wh0res in the city limits

Honestly, the only thing Lubbock has over Amarillo is more concerts/events due to Tech. Other than that, Amarillo is better in just about every category.
