What did they build to the north of Jones Stadium in Lubbock

I haven't been to Lubbock in about 3 years - what are those tall buildings you can see past the north end zone? When I lived there I'm pretty sure that was just a vacant lot.

It is a parking garage with shops in the ground floor. There are some new apartments just east of the garage. We have a friend that owns a lot just north of that garage.

Cool. Glad to see them revitalizing that area a little. Always seemed strange to me growing up that there wasn't more nice stuff right there by campus. Have they finished up all the McDougalville renovations there to the east of the stadium? When I left in '07 they were just starting to open up a lot of restaurants and nicer apartments over there.

Parking garage also has a giant new bar on the Rooftop. It was packed after the game.

They've opened a lot of new stuff to the east but I don't know if they're finished with all of it.

The really old farts like me remember that there was a 50s era shopping center across 4th street north of Jones Stadium. It had a Furr's Cafeteria, a Snow White Bakery (yum) and at one time a slot-car race track. One could show up early for a game, eat baked halibut at Furr's and walk across for the game.

When they put in the (still under construction) cross-town freeway, that area got condemned and the new stuff took its place.

The area to the east of the stadium used to be a horrible neighborhood known as the Tech ghetto. While the new redevelopment is impressive, in typical Lubbock fashion, it was a big controversy. The area was condemned by the Lubbock mayor (McDougal) and city council. Then the company that ran the redevelopment was a real estate company owned by (SURPRISE!) mayor McDougal. No conflict of interest there!

Some of the folks who wanted to stay were not happy about losing their homes. Seems like there is still one old home in the development, so maybe one holdout managed to hang on to the old homestead.

Canyon, I remember the Tech Ghetto being there when I was a kid. When I came back for law school people started referring to that area as McDougalville for the reasons you just mentioned.

Is the shopping center with Hastings in it still there on the Northwest corner of University and 4th, or did they put new stuff in there too?

Also, how is that freeway still under construction? When I left 4 years ago it seemed like they were moving along pretty fast on it.

The Marsha Sharp Freeway was bid out in "phases". Right now the phase that is under construction is from just East of Avenue A and runs all the way to the Avenue Q area where Granite Construction began their project including an intersection with 87/27 and some railroad tracks. Once this portion is complete the project should be complete.

The area around Jones Stadium looks great. The first time I saw it after the construction was done I didn't recognize anything.

Baron, that shopping center with Hastings is gone. It's the east end of the development that includes the parking garage. There are some office buildings and a parking lot where Hastings was.

McDougalville is still building. There's another batch of apartments going up between Ruby Tequila's, etc. and the Overton hotel.

All of the crime from the tech ghetto moved south. Now, the crime is between 19th & 34th streets.

You are referring to the old Town and Country Shopping Center. I remember going to Furrs plenty of times as a kid, and then walking over to the game.

The deal for the the "Raider Park" garage north of the stadium and Marsha Sharp apparently also had scandal involved. Apparently there were sweetheart deals going on and Tech/Tech Alumni Assoc. stands to lose quite a bit of money on it.
