Since I'm going to be moving on up to Lubbock for law school this fall, I figured I might as well try to stir up a discussion about what all to eat in Lubbock. I haven't spent an appreciable amount of time in the LBK in several years, so I don't have a very firm grasp on the eating establishments.

Steaks: Back in the day, 50 Yard Line used to be the place to go, but last time I was in there, it wasn't that great. I figure it'll be out of the law student price range anyway. I've heard good things about Cagle's, but I haven't ever been there.

Barbecue: ???

Mexican: For fast food, I'm already looking forward to the land of Taco Bueno, and especially Rosa's. Abuelo's is on my list as well, it was one of my favorite restaurants in Abilene. Everyone talks about Taco Villa, but I've never had the opportunity to try it out.

All-around food: Is Gardski's still in business? We used to eat at the one in Abilene all the time when I was growing up, and we'd hit it up every time we were in Lubbock.

Seafood: Is there any?

In a class all its own: Thank the good Lord there will be an Allsups always just down the road.

Gardskis on Broadway is still around, I believe. They've lost a lot lately, though. County line out in the country by the airport is closed, 50 yard line gone, the Pizza/Calzone place gone...

Looks like yo're stuck going to the chains in SW Lubbock.

50 Yard Line's still there - I ate there last week. The old owners have sold it though, and it wasn't as good as it used to be.

Cagle's is the definite place to eat steak here now. 50 yard line is still here, but the quality has sufferend in the past couple of years.

If you want good fried catfish, try RiverSmith's on 4th & Q. Otherwise, we have no good real seafood.

Gardski's is still in the same place as always. I really like the food there, they always have something new to try.

For Mexican, Abuelos is still good, Rosas is good fast food. Also, try Josie's....there are several resteraunts AND drive throughs in town. In addition, there are lots of little holes in the wall to try. Might also catch Taco Village if/when it opens back up. Also, be sure to drive through and get some Pedro's Tamales at their facility.

We have all the chains...Chilis, Red Lobster, Jason's Deli, Applebees, etc. We are also getting a FreeBirds, it is almost ready and right behind the Hooters.

The best bar-b-q (imo) is at J&J Bar-b-que downtown on Texas. They open at 11:00 weekdays and serve til they run out.

For hometown owned, try Moose Magoos (American food) on south University, Caprock Cafe (American) on 34th, Cafe J (creative American) on 19th, Jazz (Cajun) on 19th or Orlandos (Italian) on Q and south Indiana. In addition, Pinkies on the strip serves chicken gizzards that people rave about.

Skip Cattle Baron, Home Plate Diner and Rib Crib.

Steaks - Logans is pretty good, and their rolls are outstanding. Texas Land and Cattle is probably the best. Cagles is overrated. I don't eat steak out much, because I like mine a lot better.

J&J downtown is good bbq. I eat there occaisionally since I work downtown.

I'm not real big on most Mexican food in Lubbock. Abuelo's isn't bad. Josie's is overpriced and overrated for me. A lot of people rave about Josie's, but I just never have been very fond of them.

I like Caprock Cafe. Everything in there is good. Same at Riversmiths. Riversmiths probably has one of the better chicken fried steaks in town, too.

Bryan's Steakhouse is great, especially if you're really hungry and really cheap. A chicken fried steak, salad bar, baked potato, and tea used to cost $4.95 there. I think they have gone up since then, but it's still cheaper than some fast food and a whole lot better.

50 yard line sold to new owners and management, that's why it's gone downhill.

when i go back home i like to eat at rudy's and texas roadhouse.

abuelos is a can't miss on mexican food, but i really like casa ole as well.

places downtown like bleachers and caprock are always money.

the thing about lubbock is almost everybody goes out to eat dinner so there's good food all over town. have fun driving 20 minutes outside of town to get alcohol!

Here's some places I enjoy when I visit my son in Lubbock:

Richard's Fried Chicken in a strip center on Avenue P between 50th and 66th Streets.

Good chicken and CFS at a small, out of the way location.

Or try Inside 4 Bar K way out on 82nd Street for BBQ and fixings ON FRIDAYS ONLY from 11:00 - 2:00; all you can eat and drink (tea or beer) plus live country music too for seven bucks.

It's a great way to get an early start on a football weekend.

Whistling Dixie on Slide Road has all you can eat BBQ, steak, CFS, ham, catfish and chicken, good salad, good veggies and a LARGE variety of desserts in a one price buffet format.

They MAY(?)let you order from a menu there, but I never have.

For breakfast, try the Rooftop Cafe on 82nd for eggs any style, ham, omelets, bacon, sausage, grits, pancakes, waffles or French toast.

Breakfast is served all day.

And I enjoy Furr's Cafeteria (there's at least three locations, unless the original one over near Jones Stadium has closed) for the variety, price and convenient quickness.

In Post, if you are leaving or coming to Lubbock, Holley's Drive-in on the highway at the south side of town has good burgers, shakes and fries.

Big Tex Steakhouse, in Amarillo, has a famous offer to make your meal free, if you finish a giant steak and trimmings in under one hour.

I've never tried that, but I have enjoyed eating there.

It's a tourist trap, but I liked all the mounted wild game trophies and the food was good.

I've eaten at all the various places mentioned on this thread and they're fine.

But these are the Lubbock eateries that I like to go back to the most often.

I don't live in Lubbock. so, if any of this info isn't current, please correct me.

Lubbock has much more to offer in eateries than many cities I've visited.

The Good:
  • Flatlanders - On Broadway just East of the ttu campus. The owner is the brother (and my preferred cook) from Cagle's. It's the old Cagle's steaks in a new location.
  • MamaRitas - Slide Road and Loop 289. This is just plain, greasy, Tex-mex.
  • Moose Magoo's - 82nd and University Avenue. Affectionately known as a Bar & Grill. This is a great little hamburger joint with good drink prices.
  • Caprock Cafe - 34th and Indiana Avenue. "Where Texas plays..." Great sandwiches and drink prices.
  • Cujos - 4th and Frankford Avenue. The same owner as Moose Magoo's and basically the same menu, except Cujo's includes a great calzone.

The Bad:
  • Rudys - South Loop 289 and Slide Road. The food isn't even as good as the Rudy's in Aggieland.
  • Seafood - (There's not any.)
  • Rosa's - Various locations. The food isn't bad, but it's no better than Taco Cabana.

The Ugly:
  • Lubbock is full of chain restaurants. On The Border, Texas Roadhouse, Logan's Roadhouse, Outback, Applebee's, Jason's Deli, Cheddar's, Chili's, Hooter's, Rib Crib, Casa Ole, Olive Garden, the list goes on... If this is your bag, then you'll never run out of options.

That said, I second the comment above about the Inside 4-K on Friday's. The Kershner's are good folks. This place is definately Aggie Friendly. Pay particular attention to the chairs.

I'm going to have to disagree vehemently with that statement. Rosa's beat Taco C on two counts: food quality and price. And it's not even close.

Freebirds is officially here. I have been 4 times.

Supposedly, Lubbock has more restaurants per capita than any city in America. This was stated on a Gardski's commercial. At first I was skeptical, but I think it is true. The stat is skewed because so many people from towns all around the "hub city" come to Lubbock to go out to eat. People from New Mexico drive to Lubbock as the closest "big" city around.

Since you will be here for 3 years, I suggest trying all the restaurants yourself. From campus I go to Bless Your Heart, Double Dave's, Angela's, Bryan's, Durango's, Giorgio's, and about a 3 dozen other places for lunch. Enjoy.

I have a new one to add to the list that I tried today: Labowski's on 14th downtown. Cheesesteak, burgers, wraps, sandwiches, etc. The home cut fries really made it good.

The place is only a few months old.

If you like Asian food, and dont mind a dark, could be a bit cleaner atmosphere, try the Great Wall Mongolian BBQ on University and 18th street. It is one of those fill your own bowl with whatever you want, spice it up the way you want, and watch the guy cook his knuckles as he cooks your food. All you can eat.

There may not be time to do the job right, but there is always time to do the job over!!

Mexican Food:
Picantes (34th) I HIGHLY advise Picante's
Montolongo's (Clovis Hwy between University and Indiana) (family owned & operated, VERY hole-in-the-wall)

BBQ:
Rudy's (next to Hooters)
Flatlander's is no longer there.
(I haven't found any great bbq in lubbock)

Seafood:
Jazz (19th) (Half priced shrimp and crawfish during happy hour)
River Smith's (4th & Buddy Holly?)
Rockfish (Slide & loop)

Asian:
Ana'a Asian Buffet (University & 82nd area)
There is a small place behind Bless Your Heart that is good.

Hamburgers:
Samburger (34th)
Burger House (Brownfield Hwy across from Putt Putt)
Jumbo Joe's (many locations)

Other:
Buffalo Wild Wings (82nd & University)
82nd Street Diner
George's Restaurant

Montelongo's is great. I think it is just inside Indiana near the Loop on Clovis Hwy.

Lone Star Oyster Bar, "The O Bar" was the law school hang out while I was there. It is east of Indiana on 34th street. Really cold beer and great fried oysters.

There are several hole in the wall mexican food joints on the east side of Ave Q. Some are really good. Just ignore the health dept notices.

Tom and Bingo's BBQ on 34th just east of the O bar was really good. It is a small hole in the wall joint also.

There is a family that has several Thai joints there. Choo Chai is one of them. Great food, especially the old places. The original guy to come over in the 70's was a national hero in Thailand. He was the National Thai Boxing Champion and a big movie star back home.

There is a cafe in Shallowater. It is a white building just North of the overpass. The best chicken fry I have ever eaten. It is worth the drive.

Unfortunately there is no good sushi. The only place I know of is run by chinese.

Good luck in law school. Although it is at tech and I hate tech, I really enjoyed going to school there. You will meet many Ags. My class was predominantly Aggies. Us and the sips joined forces in enemy territory.

The tech students are tolerable in their own environment. It is when they venture to Austin or College Station that they lose control. And avoid being around the stadium during any big games (A&M, UT, OU, NU). That can get a little ugly also.
