J&M bbq on 34th and mempis is pretty damn good too. if you are felling especially hungry, try the all you can eat for $9. you will not be able to get out of your chair after a couple of rounds with brisket, sausage, jalapeno sausage, turkey, chicken and ribs, along with all the sides you want (cole slaw, baked potato, fries, etc.)

County Line? A year or more ago. Actually, I think it may still be available for private parties, but no longer a restaurant.

I tried Caprock Cafe the other day. The queso burger was outstanding.

For Mexican foods, Montelongos and Abuelos are great.

The best barbecue, IMHO, is definitely Tom and Bingos.

For Asian food, Choochai on 19th close to University is wonderful! Also, Saigon Cafe on 50th between Slide and Quaker is great. Shogun, while not 'real' Japanese food, is tasty.

Mexican food: Durango's, 19th and Brownfield - former owner and cooks from Taco Village.

Steaks: Double Nickel, Slide Road south of 50th - owned by the lady that owns Spanky's

Question: is Tom & Bingo's more of a barbecue stand than an actual restaurant?

I heard someone talking about a place on 34th like that, and I was wondering if that was Tom & Bingo's.

Taco Villa is on 19th in the midst of all those restaurants near Lubbock High. Amazing. The bean burritos are the best of any fast-food Mexican chain.

Just don't go during their lunchtime. Not because you won't get food, but because high-schoolers insist upon turning left onto 19th at lunch.

If you are willing to travel a bit...

Pizza Classic in Littlefield is the best pizza you can eat outside of Chicago style in Chicago. They cover the entire pizza with toppings and if you order a special, it is a special. (Littlefield is 30 minutes NW of Lubbock on HWY 84.)

If you are willing to travel a bit more, Leal's in Muleshoe used to be the best Mexican food for the money around. I know "Daddy Leal" has moved to Amarillo (all the better for me!) but I still know many people who travel up to a couple of hours to eat at Leals. (Muleshoe is an hour and 15 minutes NW of Lubbock on HWY 84)

As for places in Lubbock, I still have to go with Cagles for steaks and BBQ. Is it as good as some Central Texas mom and pop steak houses...maybe maybe not, but it is good for Lubbock - and not a chain.

Last but not least - snacks....must try Bahamma Bucks for snowcones. They are the best. Sure helps beat the heat on a summer day.

Enjoy your time in Lubbock, the tech tards aren't always the nicest, but the regular people in town aren't all that bad. I moved away and still found my way back to the Panhandle eventually.

Has anyone tried out the Las Brisas in the old The Falls building? Way south at like 114th and Quaker?

There may not be time to do the job right, but there is always time to do the job over!!

I've been to Las Brisas twice. It was good both times.

Pros: very nice atmosphere! Loved the setting. Entrees are great! Its more of a southwest/mexican steak place than just mexican food. Steaks there run about $25 ea while other entrees range from $10 to $17. My meal has always tasted great. I highly recommend the fajitas.

Cons: The chips. I don't like them at all. The salsa is good though but the chips were not tasty at all. The tortillas also tasted store-bought...at least that was the general consensus at my table of 8. Rosa's has better tortillas.

Overall - I give it a 7 on a scale of 10 (chips and tortillas are HUGE factors in my opinion...but that didn't stop me from going there a second time.)

I wouldn't suggest eating at the Y in Lubbock.

Gotta try Chimey's. The nachos and margaritas are THE best! Atmosphere is super-funky and ultra-laid-back. Beer is cold and prices are cheap. It has become my favorite hang-out in town.

Anybody been to Great Scotts for BBQ? It's at 1585 and Hwy 87.

Great Scott's was excellent. Unfortunately, it has been closed for about a year. A couple of things have opened in the building, but none has stayed very long.

1585 and 87? That's right near a quality hamburger and spicy fries at Cooper's Drive-In.

Pretty good, I guess. It hasn't been easy, for sure, but I've enjoyed it for the most part.

Shoot me an email sometime (it's in my profile), so we can get your name on the list for the Aggie Bar Association next year. We have a get-together before school starts, and since the school won't give us a list of the incoming Aggies anymore, we have to scrounge them up ourselves.

As for Chimy's don't have more than one or two margaritas unless you have a DD. Those things are STRONG!

Bueno - I'm glad your coming out here. Where are you living? If you haven't found a place yet, I suggest Sagewood. Very quite, lots of law students, professionals...rent is pretty cheap for a nice place.

J&M never ask for the bread to be cut, or take a seat without ordering unless you really want the wrath of God to rain on you.
Back in the day, Jug Little's on Friday - nobody in the cotton industrycould handle any type of business after noon. I miss those days, not the not doing anything on Friday, just the drunk with friends part.

If you want a good, slightly expensive sandwich in Lubbock (6.99), check out Steins on Q and 14th. It's full of uber-tattooed hippies and people who have unique items stuck in and out of their body.

But, the sandwiches are great. And you get to say you chatted with a dude that has glass hoops in his ears. Where else can you do that in Lubbock? Other than Luxor...

I went to Las Brisas last night, at 114th and Quaker, next to the Falls Athletic Club. Very good food, a little pricey, but great atmosphere. Check it out

Anybody eat at Donny Anderson's Red Raider Room by the circle lately? Southern Living just did a 3 page article on the Carriage House Buffet.

After three years of mulling it over, I finally decided to eat at Ranchhouse (Buddy Holly, north of 19th).

The breakfast was decent, but more importantly it's cheap. I think I spent $5.50 on eggs, hashbrowns, biscuits and gravy, bacon, and coffee. There may have been more but I can't remember.

Anyways, good place to go. Law students who are graduating next year, consider it a good place to load up before going to bar review courses.

If you go to Las Brisas, ask for the patio special margarita. It's like Chimy's, and includes a dose of Everclear.
