CanyonAg - I understand about PD and the minority thing. When I went there we had one black kid finally my senior year and he was from Amarillo Air Force Base. There was NO anymosity towards him and a lot of support - he was a great guy. Folks don't recall that even the SWC in those years was "all white". Actually Mercury Morris at West Texas State broke the College color barrier in Texas a year before U of Houston. Then SMU and then t.u. Austin... the dam burst about 1964-65 for everyone else as I recall. Had to or else be non-competitive.
Regarding AHS. When PD took a lot of the Northside athletes (and won the State Championship in Basketball their very first year in existence 1954-55...), and then Tascosa came along and had essentially "everything west of Georgia" and North of 45th. (I think that was the boundary...). Bell was just about the limits of Western growth at the time except for Belmar. The Amarillo Hospital District was an empty field. AHS HAD been a state power for many, many years up until the split with PD, Tascosa, etc. My parents moved from Pleasant Valley to Olsen Park (Tascosa land) during this turmoil. The "old" Amarillo city fathers (ALL of whom were AHS alums) finally had enough and redistricted and moved a brand spanking new AHS into the middle of the hottest (and most affluent) new neighborhoods in town i.e., West of Bell and gerrymandered the best of the best (Oldham Circle, et al) to regain their prowess putting the new line at Andrews in Olsen Park, etc.. and cut Tascosa's plush district waaay back...
Funny how the "have's" in town finally had had enough and took matters into their own hands to regain lost stature... During the "splits" of the 50;s and 60's and 70's of AHS "territory" centered on downtown, their athletic and other "competitive" fortunes had fallen on bad times and were pretty bad...
Only instance I know of where a High School muscled in on someone else's turf like that...
Usually they did like Bryan (i.e., 9th, 10th grade lower HS; and 11th, 12th grade upper HS), or Judson, Plano, etc., until they finally got so big they had to finally split.
Best I can tell the only thing keeping AHS from ursurping even more "high $$ turf" is the Canyon School District.
Boozoo - I guess I'm getting old. I played varsity the entire time I was at PD but haven't clicked with your description. Give me a last name?? ...and a graduation year if you know it for sure. I'll look in my annuals and check it out... Anyone with a white '55 chevy had to be alright in those days... Chevy and Ford were the "in" autos in those days for sure - and everyone had a favorite body style. Duals, flippers, lowered and raked, wheel well covers, etc., were just as depicted in American Graffiti and Grease...
And yes, a lot of PD folks went to Twings. Kent Twing was a nice guy and PD class '61 too - but comparitively it was "rough" and relatively small with a limited menu AND the cuter girls typically went across town where the big $$ were - especially after dark. The problem was that it was not very big - and "the drag" down Polk to Phariss Dairy Queen, (and one whose name escapes me at SW 10th at S. Taylor) and on to Dino's (Wolflin, Civic Circle at Blackburn - which is also where Brent's University Shop was located...) was the "other end" of the Drag... This was PRE McDonald's and PRE I-40 - in fact, the Canyon E-way had just been completed. Gasoline was 19 cents a gallon and people still siphoned from each other as a rite of passage... Sometimes PD people went out East on Northeast 8th (Now Amarillo Blvd) to the A&W Root Beer stand across from where Bob Wills played regularly at the Palace. I think the wrestling matches were held out there every Thursday night also. Dory Funk (and sons Terry, Dory Jr., etc), Gorgeous George, Tommy Martin, and many other early famous names honed their skills in Amarillo before it became such a big deal in larger venues...
Most altercations between high school guys were taken care of at the Will Rogers Park located at NE 8th (Amarillo Blvd) at N. Buchanan. A lot of feuds were settled there from Horace Mann and Palo Duro and between the other HS's. This era was long before "gangs" but there were certainly "cliques" that ran together. Athletes (esp Football) were usually untouchable... and it went downhill from there.
The Big Tex Steakhouse was at Grand at NE 8th (Amarillo Blvd East) for years before it moved out. Other popular restaurants were Batson's Family Restaurant (10th at Pierce ?) and Myer's Fried Chicken on 6th Street. Everyone bought their tires at Ted Lokey's and got their cars fixed at Hedgecoke Motors. It was NOT considered "uncool" to ride the bus...
Some of the greatest names in New York Yankee history played for the Amarillo Gold Sox in "Potter County Stadium" in the Texas League (1959-63) - (before it became a Padres and other affiliate) names like manager Billy Martin, Joe Pepitone, etc., all honed their skills before becomeing World Champions. The World Series was MUCH more important in those days and people would bring the very first primitive transistor radios into class with ear phones to keep up with the Series...
