We have moved to CS from San Angelo & absolutely love it, but we can't find Mexican food similar in taste to all the restaurants in San Angelo. Can anyone recommend a place for us to try?

Unfortunately, this is one of the biggest things you'll miss moving from SA to BCS. There simply aren't any places in BCS that compare. I thought Mi Cocina on Bush was pretty decent and there was a place in downtown Bryan, but I never found anything that great in 5 years. I left in 2002, so maybe something changed. There is a Rosas there now, but no sit-down places that I know of.

We got an Abuelo's on University. It's pretty good. Most places suck. You might have to suck it up and drive to Houston or Austin occasionally.

if you like it hot, the next time your in Abuelos, ask your waitress to bring the habenero hot sauce. They bring it in tiny little cups, I like to mix it in the regular hot sauce.

Los Nortenos(??) in downtown Bryan seemed to have enchiladas close to what Henry's or Chilangos would give you. We ate there over OSU weekend and was pretty good.

Could have changed since then.

We have a couple that come close in Brenham, a thirty five minutes away. Mariachi's and Manuels. Both started and run by folks from Mexico. Manuels is more authentic like you are used to. Mariachi's has good margiritas

too bad Garcia's closed down years ago. That place was very good. It was rated the best restaurant in town the last three years it was in business. Gina's in downtown Bryan was good, too, but it's no longer there, either. I had to make the opposite switch (CS to SA), and I miss B/CS a LOT.

Just a guess, as you are a CE and an Aggie and live in Angelo. I lived in Angelo for 37 years and know SK and SKG well. Just thought is would be logical that is where you worked. I was pres of the Angelo A&M club in 2002, etc, so have been to many meetings at SKG.

Tell Russell I said hello. He should be able to figure out who I am! (I know you don't see SK too much as he is always climbing mountains or doing something cool.)

oh, believe me, I see SK a lot. He still has an office here and is here quite a bit actually. He recently was in China. Tell Russell you said hi and admit that I've been on TexAgs?! JK, I will. We just had another Aggie luncheon today, fyi, and SK talked about the Aggie recruits and football the whole time.

And that is different how???

Tell him the Angelo AGs in the TN hills said Howdy. We saw him once this past football season in CLL.

Guess that is what I miss the most is the A&M club. There isn't one in the Chattanooga area. We just do Muster here.

The meeting in Feb is always good due to the recruiting update.

Later....

I had the chance to visit SA this weekend and enjoyed some fine Mexican food.

I must say that I tried, but never found anything that would compare in College Station.

If there's one great thing about SA that keeps me here.... mexican food.

I try to talk my wife into moving all the time and every time she takes me out to Franco's, Fuentes, Henry's, Don Oscars, or Los Panchitos and I'm forced to stay. It's a vicious, vicious cycle.

I always said in Midland/Odessa (probably should say West Texas) some of our worst mexican food is better than many places best.

Well I need to try me some San Angelo Mexican food I guess.

We visited San Angelo last weekend and I was able to get a "fix" of great Mexican food. I wish we could get one of the restaurant owners there to invest in a restaurant in CS. We are still trying to find something comparable. We are surprised at the number of places in CS that use that processed cheese (Velveeta??) on Mexican food!!

Being from South Texas originally, I was not impressed with the Mexican Food samples I had when I was in San Angelo...

I thought CS Mexican Food was slightly above San Angelo's options.

Funny, I thought all the Mexican food in San Angelo sucked. The last few months I was there I stopped going out to eat at restaurants because the service was so horrible, Chili's in San Angelo included.

I've had much better Mexican food in San Antonio.

Some people think beans belong in chili.

i.e.- each has his own opinion.

Admitting going to Chili's says it all right there...

I'm a big Mejor Que Nada fan. And again, BCS must have the worst Mexican food in the whole state. It's depressing.

EMc77,

Excuse me for going to Chili's one night because I did not care for the mom and pop restaurants I went to in San Angelo. At least at Chili's I knew what to expect.

I wasn't impressed with the Mexican food in San Angelo; to me, it doesn't stand out in any way compared to San Antonio where I also lived. San Angelo is out by itself, 200 miles away from any other sizeable town, so yes, the Mexican food probably seems good there because there's nothing else in the region to compare it to, except maybe Abilene.

But I had such poor service at just about every restaurant I went to in San Angelo that the last few months I was there I didn't even bother anymore.

I know...if only San Angelo could get a big city Mexican food restaurant like On the Border. The closer you get to the big cities, the better the Mexican food gets. Great food & great service!

We're still continuing the search. I know San Angelo's food is Tex-Mex rather than authentic Mexican, but it's what we love. What bothers me most about the food in CS is that most places use Velveeta or some similar cheese. To me, Mexican food needs real cheese, not some processed cheese product!

Abuelos and Rosas.

No offense, but I'd rather eat at On The Border than ever visit San Angelo again. While I was there, I was under the impression that the town has seen better days.

Try Casa Rodriguez or Papa Perez in downtown Bryan. I also like Jose's on Texas.

EDIT: And I'm a native of a Texas border town, so I know what I'm talking about.

None taken. And no offense, but you probably fit in better at On the Border anyhow.

I hate to hijack, but I have a quick question.

I grew up in West Texas and have always loved SA. I have fond memories of camping with my Grandpa out at lake Nastywater.

If an attorney wanted to relocate there would anyone have an idea as to some options? I haven’t been able to find any kind of legal recruiter and have been gone so long I’m not sure what large industry might be there.

Thanks for any input.
